He began writing full time in 1992. His bestsellers have been translated into more than ten languages. ⭐ Like all Stephen Leather’s books this is a top story that stays in my mind and the messages live on. The useless senior officers who escape any responsibility and the non careing foreign aid workers. So much in this world is done for appearance sake only.
⭐ Same good read as the two above. Highly recommend.Fred
⭐ Compelling reading
⭐ Very much a Dan Shepherd type of story – on a mission, gets home and then the story begins.Still I enjoy Dan Shepherd stories
⭐ Dan “Spider” Shepherd finds himself jammed in the forward torpedo tube launch area of a British submarine headed for the Norwegian islands. It’s September 1997, almost a year and a half since he was selected into the Sabre Squadron of the SAS.His mates, Geordie, Liam and Jimbo are with him in the cramped quarters griping and joking before getting prepared for the exercise.Listening in on the conversations, we learn that Shepherd’s wife Sue is seven months pregnant. She has raised the issue of Dan leaving the SAS and perhaps becoming a police officer so that he would not be away from home so much. That didn’t go over well with the squad.Their mission this time is to test-launch a self-inflating recconnaisance boat and use it to make a covert landing on the Lofoten islands. A good place to keep an eye on the Russian Northern fleet.Bad weather warnings came through from the sub commander and he recommended postponing the exercise. Shepherd relayed this recommendation back to his squadron Commander deVale who issued a Direct order to “carry on..who dares wins”.The squad suited up in Dry suits and were waiting in the lock-out chamber until the recce boat was shot out the torpedo tube. The Shepherd opened the hatch and the squad swam out to catch the boat now inflating. The dry suits would only provide 45 minutes of protection against hypothermia ,so it was imperative that the boat inflate quickly. But it did not. The valves froze over at the half way point and the boat capsized. All the equipment except the flares were lost. The men hung onto the sides of the boat and fired off flares every 10 minutes . The hope was that the Norwegian Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter would spot the flare and come to their aid before they succumbed to hypothermia. At this point I will end my content narration to so that you can read the exciting events and ending to this story.Leather has done it again with another 5 star short story in the Spider Shepherd series.
⭐ A helpful insight into the world of Spider Shepherd and his buddies. If you are concerned about paying out for a full size novel or,like me, you can’t get enough try out some of these short stories. There is enough in the story to tell you if you want to read more and to give a useful insight into how the dynamic of this group of guys work together in Spider’s army days.
⭐ Another action packed short story from Stephen Leather that is easy to read making it a great page turner. Why not give it a go at such a low price. I thoroughly recommend it
⭐ The story begins on a Royal Navy submarine in September 1997, all four friends from Selection having now been admitted to the SAS and formed a four-man “patrol” deployed to test a self-inflating boat somewhere near the Arctic Circle. Naturally, challenges ensue which form the basis of the tale.We learn more about pals Liam McKay, Jimbo Shortt and Geordie Mitchell, and there was one particular scene that brought a tear to my eye. We’re also introduced to Allan Gannon, whom we know from the novels is by then Shepherd’s former Commanding Officer. In addition, we meet Sue, Shepherd’s wife, and their newborn son. We also witness something of the understandable tensions arising between an army wife who’s also a new, first-time mum, and an SAS soldier on active duty who can divulge only limited information about his deployments. This of course ultimately leads to Shepherd leaving the SAS for the police where he’s working when the novels begin. Two other short stories follow on immediately from the events of this book: Hostile Territory and Rough Diamonds. They’ll both make more sense if you read them all in the right order.Another thoroughly enjoyable tale.
⭐ Another short story from Spider’s early days. As usual I will not say too much about the story because I don’t want to spoil it. We find out why Liam is called Liam and that’s all I will say.The only criticism I have is that the ending was rather sudden. It left me wonderingBut as usual an excellent short story and one I would highly recommendMore please Mr L. Ta muchly
⭐ One of the great things about the author’s Spider Shepherd stories is that he changes with his experiences and not only grows as a character but also becomes the sum of his experiences. So, with the SAS part of his life we see a younger Spider, under pressure from his pregnant wife for doing the job he loves. And this time the job is a training excercise that goes wrong and for speaking up about it, the team are put on a bit of a black list.I enjoyed it but it felt a bit abrupt (perhaps leading into the next short story).
