    Description

“The material is superbly chosen and brilliantly written … the language is clear, direct and rigorous … a superb addition to the library of any physicist.” — Physics Today. This lucidly written text emphasizes optics and acoustics, with considerable emphasis placed on establishing a close connection between mathematical expressions and the associated physical ideas.Beginning with an inductive derivation of the equation for transverse waves on a string, the student is led through successively more complex subjects as acoustic plane waves, boundary-value problems, polarization, optical anisotropy, interference, diffraction, dispersion, and three-dimensional waves.Designed for a one-semester intermediate level undergraduate course (although there is easily enough material here for two semesters), Wave Phenomena is accessible to students with calculus up to the level of partial differentiations. Mathematical techniques, beyond the most elementary ones, are evolved, when needed, in the book itself. Moreover, the treatment is so thorough that students could work through the book themselves with minimal help from an instructor. There are a large number of interesting, well-chosen problems at the end of each chapter (with solutions for about half of them), and several appendixes providing additional mathematical apparatus: the representation of sinusoidal functions by complex numbers, frequently used trigonometric identities, one-dimensional hydrodynamic equations in Eulerian form, and more.Although geared to undergraduate physics majors, the comprehensiveness, rigor, and clarity of this text make it an ideal reference for almost any physicist in need of a review of optics or acoustics.

⭐I found this book extremely well written and an excellent introduction to the physics of wave propogation. In my own work I am concerned with the way a light wave propogates through the optics of a telescope. I read the 1967 edition of this book and was pleasantly surprised by Towne’s comprehensive and well explained coverage of this subject. This book would make an excellent undergraduate upper level course.

⭐I like this book a lot. It is a mainly a book about electromagnetic waves and acoustics. It contains excellent coverage of polarisation and diffraction. The explanations are clear and there are lots of diagrams that accompany the paragraphs. The author takes his time and discusses the concepts in detail, which might put some people off. However, I think this type of discussion is an excellent way to learn and think about physics. I would recommend it as a supplementary text for a course on waves or even wave optics. As for prerequisites, you will need a good understanding of multi-variable calculus and differential equations. It will also be helpful to know some electromagnetism for the discussion about electromagnetic waves. This would be a nice book to get in the second year of a physics degree. The bad thing I have to say about this book is mainly regarding the printing quality. Now, it is definitely not a problem at all to read this book. But this printing quality is a bit inconsistent in that the ink in some pages are lighter than other pages. Again, this does not make reading the words impossible but it is there. However, this did not bother me at all.

⭐Excelente libro, detalla muy bien la teoría y es muy claro en la solución de los problemas, es muy didáctico.

⭐Very fast shipping. Book quality is as described
