⭐Benjamin Moser is a joy to read as he is frames his subject from various angles. I learned so much about Brazil, Jewish history and writers and colleagues of Clarice Lispector. It is a generous piece of work, well researched. I am intrigued by Clarice and want to read her work having read Agua Viva which is astounding. As a woman, I want to know more about her, more anecdotes and stories of her dog for instance, more detail. I just ordered Chronicle of a Murdered Family by Cordosa; this experience opened my world to new writers. Great experience.

⭐This biography allowed me to reach deeper into Lispector’s work through her history and the upheaval in Rio and Brazil, overall, during the ’40’s and throughout her life. It’s brilliantly written and the introspective mastery of Lispector’s work is even more extraordinary considering all of the nationalist writers of the time! ⭐The book was fascinating because it included so much of the history of Brazil in the first half of the 20th century as well as the history of Ukraine during the same period. Both were instrumental in forming Clarice Lispector’s character and personality. Mr. Moser did a remarkable amount of research for the background of this biography. The quote which was powerful for me, since I was in a similar situation in Brazil having survived WWII in Europe, is:”Surviving means not to know what to do with oneself.” So true!

⭐This biography is clearly a labor of love–Moser’s appreciation of Lispector is quite infectious–the facts of her life are very well documented–my only caveat is some of his critical speculations of the work itself–all in all, this is a valuable book about a unique writer and person.

⭐I’m Brazilian and I had already read and owned the Portuguese Brazilian version of this book,It was just a matter of curiosity and willing to own and read the original book, since I’m a Portuguese and English teacher in addition to being a Clarice Lispector fun.Anyway It happened to meet my expectation upmost!All the best!

⭐Brilliantly written memoir of the most poignant Brazilian author. Extremely well researched. For anyone who hás even been astonished by Clarice’s sheer genius, I highly reccomend this book. My only regret is having waited so long to read it.

⭐Lispector’s life is worth a biography but this one was too lengthy. It felt repetitive and it didn’t seem necessary to go into such detail about publishing her works.

⭐As a brazilian that had her life changed by Clarice as a young person, this biography hits all the right notes.Easy and fun to read.

⭐Excellent research. Well rendered. We probably won’t get any closer to the enigma Clarice than this portrait.
