Description

Wisdom of the Martians of Science refers to five scientists whose brilliance contributed to shaping the modern world. John von Neumann was a pioneer of the modern computer; Theodore von Kármán was the scientist behind the US Air Force; Leo Szilard initiated the development of nuclear weapons; the Nobel laureate Eugene P Wigner was the world’s first nuclear engineer; and Edward Teller was the father of the hydrogen bomb. They were born and raised in Budapest, were forced out of Hungary and then from Germany, they became Americans, and devoted themselves to the defense of the United States and the Free World. They contributed significant discoveries to fundamental science ranging from the properties of materials to the application of the symmetry principle in physics, to creating information theory, to game theory. The areas in which we can learn about their wisdom include applications of science to past, present and future real-world needs; defense; education; environment; human nature; humor; politics; religion; weather modification, and others. This book shows the wisdom of the Martians by presenting their thoughts and ideas in their own words and placing them into context. Their wisdom is intriguing, witty, provocative and thought provoking. It extended over many aspects of life and culture that impinge on our existence. While we cannot always agree with what they say, they are never boring. The power of their words and their philosophies will inspire the readers to pursue their own dreams.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s predecessor “The Martians of Science”. These five brilliant men from Budapest, left Europe upon the rise of Hitler, came to the U.S.A. and all of them joined in our effort to defeat him. The “Hargittai’s” are excellent story tellers and historians of science and have written a number of “Popular Science” books intended for laymen such as I. And I have read most of them. The book provides deeper insight into the personalities and thoughts of these five scientists. Fascinating! Each made enormously valuable contributions to “the cause” and to Science. von Karman and Wigner were largely unknown to me and these books have prompted me to learn more about each. All were eccentric to some extent and that may be the result of their education and intense interest in science. The most unusual in this respect is to my mind Szilard. I probably not choose all of them as a friend primarily due to their strong personalities, Teller for example. This is a profound and thought provoking book, a most memorable one that I can highly recommend to anyone interested in history or science.

⭐A deeply interesting book that delivers the thoughts of some of the true giants of 20th Century science; those who share the familiar thread of being born in Hungary and compelled to work elsewhere due to antisemitism. I wonder of the unique circumstances in early 20th century Budapest that created the likes of Theodore von Karman, Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, John von Neumann, and Edward Teller and this book gives some clues. However, the main object of the book is to present the deep thoughts of this esteemed group. It is an easy read, but has many passages worth meditating over. Often we think of physicists and chemists as one-dimensional beings, only pushing science forward in narrow specialties. This book distills the wisdom of these deep thinkers in coherent groupings on matters far beyond physics and chemistry, such as happiness, war, relationships, and other important topics. It is the type of book that begs for a re-read just after finishing it.
