⭐This is one of my favorite books. When I don’t have time to reread for pleasure History of Western Philosophy, for which Russell got the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950, I read this shorted version — condensed for the “American Market” as part of Russell’s unending quest to make enough money to live on. I also give it as a graduation present to High School seniors, because I wish I had read it before college — one needs an overview before diving into the details.Why doesn’t someone republish this book in a “coffee table” version with modern color graphic? This is a great book, the text is the best short introduction to Western Philosophy, by a country mile. And with good color illustrations of the places mentioned, and the concepts they attempted to illustrate, might be a best seller.

⭐An outstanding, popular-styled exposition of the great thinkers of the Western World ( starting with the Greeks before Socrates and Plato) who are the fountainhead of all Western European ( including British & American, and ultimately the whole world) philosophy – political, ‘metaphysical’, ethical, religious ( Jewish, Christian and even Islamic).Russell demonstrates that even the bare beginnings of what became true scientific thought: theory of basic ‘elements’ – atoms, chemical interactions etc. is foundational in these earliest thinkers ( Empedocles, Pythagoras and Democritus).Highly recommended! Wisdom of the West is a colorfully illustrated version of Russell’s more scholarly History of Western Philosophy.

⭐”Wisdom of the West by Bertrand Russell” is a great book especially for people who took many many of our wisdoms for grant. This book will open up many of their views regarding to their beliefs as were taught by their religious institutions and/or misconceptions in history…based on long ago history…philosophy…math…logic…science…etc. The details in the book is easy to read and easy to follow. I love it! And I bought many copies to give away to my family’s and close friends’ children.

⭐I discovered this book by reading Jacques Lacan but I did’nt find this book in the store called “Wsmith” in Paris, because it was OP ; but I found it on Amazon and it’s a pleasure to “waste time” with Russell, who wrote this philosophical book as rigourously as possible. This book is to find (it’s diffucult for French people !) and to read with pleasure.

⭐This is an excellent, readable overview of western philosophy up to 1959. If you are one of those who ponder philosophy and want an interesting discussion of the big philosophical questions as they were addressed in the West from the pre-Socratics through Wittgenstein, Russell’s volume is masterful. Lavishly illustrated and very thorough, I found it delightful and helpful. Give it to your thoughtful friends.

⭐Some years ago I had this book, I’m very happy to re-read it again, I consider Russel’s work a fundamental contribution into understanding mankind pace through the ages

⭐This is still a good reference textbook into the thinking of a great philosopher.

⭐A condensed version of Russell’s History of Western Philosophy, which is a classic in the discipline. His easy, understandable writing style shines, and the illustrations are wonderful.

⭐very happy with the copy in good condition -to replace an earlier copy which I have sent to my grandson now 18 who lives abroad. IOld copy has all my markings in it – a memento of his grandad in england.

⭐ラッセルのHistory of Western Philosophy（西洋哲学史）は有名ですが、本書のことはあまり知られていません。私は学生のころに翻訳で読みましたが、なかなか面白い本です。前書の続編、簡略版といった内容ですが、哲学の概念をグラフィックで伝えるというのが本書のコンセプトになっています。図版がたくさん含まれています。翻訳書の書名は図説西洋哲学史だったと思います。前書が長すぎ、よくわからないといった人にはもちろん、ラッセルに興味がある人には面白いと思います。
