Description
A veteran of World War II himself, experienced historian Colonel Dupuy is expertly placed to write this revealing and fascinating account of the war.Compressing the enormity of the Second World War into a compact narrative sweeping the world, Dupuy explores everything from life in England under the Blitz to General Joseph Stilwell’s 400-mile trek through Burma, as well as Stalingrad and Guadalcanal and the war in the Pacific.Uncovering new and shocking information, he presents the most detailed examination to date of Operation Bodyguard – the plan designed to delude the Germans about the Allied invasion of the Continent – and explores the devastating impact of the Battle of the Bulge on American morale. Investigating Churchill and Truman’s decision to allow Stalin to decide when the Italian and German surrenders would be revealed, he also delves into lesser-known and bravely fought campaigns that altered the outcome of the War – and the world as we know it.Praise for R. Ernest Dupuy:“It is a comprehensive treatment of its subject, covering the good leadership as well as the bad. It is well worth reading for military and civilian alike. Besides this, it is entertaining reading” – General Gavin“Superb… enthralling… highly recommended” – Library Journal“Concise, well-written… a wide selection of paintings and photographs and excellent maps… aid in understanding the complexities of strategy and following the action” – The New York TimesColonel R. Ernest Dupuy (1887- 1976) was a newspaperman as well as a National Guardsman as a young man. He saw action in both World Wars. Twenty-five years later, as acting director of the SHAEF public relations division, it was his voice that announced the Normandy landings. After his retirement in 1947, he specialized in writing military history, and authored many books on the U.S. Army, West Point, and military affairs.

⭐If you had to read one book about World War II and the different operations of theater this is the one. I guarantee you won’t feel lost if you reading about Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, Sicily, Africa and more. The author went into great detail considering that it could’ve been 2000 pages more. There is a reason World War II veterans are considered the greatest generation and this book will tell you exactly why. This is the beginning of a story telling you about your grandfather’s, fathers and relatives and countless others who defended this country and made it what it is today.
⭐Too much name detail of generals and admirals for a compact history
⭐Mistakes of a basic nature crop up throughout this book, which ruin an otherwise excellent read.1. Throughout the narrative, General Thomas Blamey is called General Blarney. For a military historian this is an embarrassing fault.2. The Tirpitz was indeed bombed at anchor by the RAF using Blockbuster bombs, though a 6,000 pounder did not exist. They were 4000 pound and 8000 pounders.3. The Japanese ships referred to as “Fusu” and “Musahi” are the heavy cruisers “Fuso” and “Musashi”.4. The long range p52 fighter referred to is the p51 Mustang. These errors could be forgiven as poor research by a civilian author, but this guy was an American Colonel during the conflict he wrote about, and certainly should have been picked up by competent proof readers. The Devil is,, indeed, in the detail.
⭐I liked the fact it followed chronological the events of the war. It truly emphasized the size and scope of the war. So many books detail one small part of it. I wish there had been maps included so I could follow where the action was.
⭐This book was very entertaining and very hard to put down. I have read many accounts of WW 2 and noticed events matched with other books. There were many pieces of pre battles that filled in the blanks other authors omitted. I highly recommend this book!!!
⭐Accurate, interesting, and succinct history of WWII, including major actions in all theaters. The author carefully outlines the important strategic decisions, and illustrates with inciteful discussions of well chosen tactical examples. All in all a great way to either learn or review the major points and events of this amazingly vast conflict.
⭐It was a great summary of the events in both the Pacific and European Theatres. I learned many things that I never knew about WWII. I never knew that battles were so costly for the Allied and Axis forces. Good reading for history buffs.
⭐Although this is supposed to be a potted history of World War11, it is told in a very biased way. It appears that the author has no respect for the British troops, in particularly Montgomery. On reading his description of the battles in Europe, the American forces always were gallant, efficient, etc, whilst the Brits were useless! It became tedious after a while, to read about his descriptions of victorious Americans, as well as useless British forces.Mr Dupay has a very one sided view of the war, very unfortunate.
⭐An excellent account of the 2nd world war giving a full record on what took place, where it took place, nations & units involved & the outcome of the battles. Very easy to read & follow the events, more for the hobby reader of WWII. Fully recommended for anyone to read, totally enjoyed it.
⭐5stars for value, mostly. Very readable quick summary of the whole war and interesting to read the war through an American historian of high quality. The American war effort on two fronts was truly astounding!
⭐very good reading
⭐Dupuy does a good job of summarizing the major events of the war. He captures the great extent and sweep of the conflict. He makes a few minor chronological mistakes, such as placing the Canadian raid on Dieppe in 1943 rather than 1942. As an American military man he places extra emphasis on the role of the US, sometimes as a result leaving the impression that the contributions of the other major Allies were subsidiar. He has clear admiration for some characters, such as Patton, and clear antipathy for others, such as Montgomery. He admits that not all US leaders made the best decisions – such as ignoring the clear signs of the coming Japanese attack and Eisenhower’s terrible decision to ignore the opportunity to take Berlin and let the Soviets do it in 1945. He also does not give a closing assessment and accounting of the war’s horrendous toll and its long-term consequences.
⭐It hits the high notes but it has conflicting parts with other books i’ve read. Who is right who is wrong I’ll go with the in depth read and the literature to back it up. This is a decent summary of WW2.
