So it’s no surprise that this verse novella has drawn so many translators. It’s a challenge, too, since verse is always harder to translate than prose. (Vikram Seth, rather than translating Onegin again, updated it to the 1980s in San Franciso in his The Golden Gate). A.D.P. Briggs is arguably the greatest living scholar of Pushkin, certainly in the UK, and as such he’s spent a lifetime thinking about how to translate Pushkin. Briggs is an experienced and accomplished translator, not only for Pushkin (Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades) but for Penguin Classics (War and Peace, The Resurrection) and others. Briggs has not only been thinking about Pushkin for decades, he’s been working on this translation for nearly as long. It’s a landmark event in the history of Onegin translations and this edition is accompanied by a thoughtful introduction and translator’s note.

⭐Perfectly readable and enjoyable translation. If you like Rosemary Edmonds’ Tolsoy translations you’ll feel comfortable with this version. I don’t read Russian so I have no idea how literal this is, or isn’t.

⭐It’s been a long time since I last read this work, so I’m in no position to compare translations. But the translator’s prologue on the challenges of translating the work was enlightening, and helped me understand the choices he made in his translation.Translating poetry between languages is always fraught with compromises, and more so for works with an extended plot. Pushkin’s complex rhyming structure, as well as the distance between the Russian and English languages, compounds the challenge. I think this version well captures the poetic structure of the work, at least based on the explanation of the prologue, but I found the action of the story sometimes hard to follow. There is a plot summary up front, and despite the suggestion that you might want to leave it for the end if you aren’t familiar with the work, I’d suggest that you do read it first if you aren’t familiar with the work; it will make it easier to follow.Not having read Pushkin in the original, I can’t speak to the balance between poetry and plot clarity the translator had to start with, but I’m sure the process of translation had to exacerbate the tension. This is a version where the poetry comes first. The result is fascinating, if sometimes a bit confounding.The publisher provided me a copy for review.

⭐Anthony Briggs’ translation is wonderful.

⭐According to D. S. Mirsky, the greatest strength of Pushkin’s poetry in the original Russian version of the book is: “it flows and bubbles like champagne in sunshine”. The translator of this version, Anthony Briggs tried to preserve this champagne effect in his translation and he did it quite elegantly I must say. That is why in my opinion, this is the best translation of Eugene Onegin. I have compared this version with other popular versions like James Falen’s version and Stanley Mitchell’s version. But Anthony Briggs’s translation seemed most elegant in terms of poetry. Hence I highly recommend people to read this translation.
