    Description

Does a word mean what it says? Sometimes – but not always. Everyone thinks that meaning is contained within words – like sardines in a tin, or milk in a bottle. After all, words are nice stable things that you can look up in a dictionary aren’t they? But dictionaries only take us so far… If you eavesdropped on a teenage conversation, rushing to a dictionary – with its definitions frozen in time – wouldn’t help much. Who’s using a word and to whom, in what context, for what purpose – all these influence the meaning of the language we use. The word’s origins and history (its ‘genetics’) also help. Try teaching yourself another language from a phrasebook and you’ll soon learn that you can be correct, in the formal sense, but still way behind the times in reality. In this book Wajnryb considers these and other questions to explore how and why our language works the way it does.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Words are power and weakness. Sometimes, they are expressive, but quiet can be expressive, too. We choose our words, sometimes not so carefully. Words can be sharp, harmful of others and ouselves, but words can be gentle, caring and kind. How we need those meaningful words? Some of them make us cry or laugh. How many different words we can say, and do we really know their meanings? We all search for meanings admit it or not. I am one searcher too…Prof. Wajnryb’s book showes many meaningful words that are chosen by her and those words meant something to her in her life. She is a linguist, so she can choose her words cerfully. I am not sure if I am careful sometimes. Her chosen words have meanings to her and others. She makes others think and her words live on. She chose situations where her words belong too. They are connected to everyday life. They are connected to us.I reccomend her book for linguists, people like you and me. Her words will carry on. They are already touching me and will touch many others…
