User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review ‘A formidable answer to an age-old question: How can a man make himself tolerable and useful while accepting and expressing his primordial maleness. The searching and aggressive urges to conquer what needs subduing, protect the vulnerable, fix what is broken, compete and risk what demands to be risked in himself and the world? The author’s message is set in the Christian tradition without being controlled by its ideology. Eldredge believes that institutions can oppress a man’s heart and keep society from benefiting from his fierce desire to love, do good, fight evil, and go beyond the limits. The exceptional writing and ideational balance (and a sensitive interpretation by Kelly Dolan) make this a compelling effort to integrate the hero’s gritty nature with the public good.’ T.W. © AudioFile Portland, Maine –T.W. © AudioFile Portland, Maine About the Author John Eldredge is a bestselling author, a counselor, and a teacher. ⭐I am not surprised there was a lot of negative feedback on the topics expressed in this little book. In these times it is no longer valid to use gender to explain why you may like or dislike certain things. This book is not meant only for the jock, or the outdoorsman. It is meant for the heart that yearns to find ways to express a passion that may seem wrong for a Christian man, and that’s really it.There are many opinions on how we should behave, or more recently that we do not behave as men have in the past. It is true we are meant to be adventurous and a bit wild but that is a different thing for each man, not a template- the author was simply expressing it as he himself saw it. It is up to you to find your passion, your wild side, and break free of the life you may mistakenly think is correct as a follower of the Way of God. But there are many different paths, as long as we stay on that straight and narrow one, neither turning to the left or the right- being obedient, faithful. I would say if it doesn’t trouble your spirit, go for it! The only opinion that matters is Gods, not mans.I myself do many things that aren’t considered manly yet also do things that are over the top! For example, I write poetry, rescue ladybugs, read about decorating and color and style, and tear up over emotional things- I am sentimental, and I try to show empathy to others at all times. I also carry a concealed firearm, practice Tang Soo Do and Krav Maga, and regularly work out with weaponry such as knives and sticks- and I am trying to learn Iado, the Way of drawing and cutting with the katana. I love long walks, but I don’t watch sports, and can’t tell you anything about any team. I don’t bunjee dive or shoot down the rapids or any of that, but I see it as valid. Again, if it doesn’t become the end in itself it is all up to that old thing we used to call conviction- the Holy Spirit will tell you it isn’t something you should do. It isn’t nerds vs. jocks, or the cultured, educated man vs the uneducated manual laborer. (I work in a factory, and that is because I chose to work with my hands after spending half my life working in the Mental Health field.) We are all part of the body- and scripture says no particular part is favored above the other. So embrace your inner wild man and push your boundaries a little bit! For some of us it isn’t much or very daring, but it is enough to inspire the soul.

⭐If you want to write a book about what you feel to be true, that’s one thing, but when you bend, distort and flat out lie about what the Word of God says to back your belief, well then expect to be judged by God’s Word.If that’s the case this book is heretical at best.It seems like throughout this book the author is trying too hard to make up for some lack of machismo he thinks he needs.I actually watched one of the Wild at Heart Bootcamp sessions where John Eldredge makes fun of Mister Rogers and insinuates Fred Rogers is not a “real” man.So in this book and others authored by Eldredge, he sets out to show what a “real man” he is by climbing mountains, hunting bear, tracking elk, blah, blah, blah…..Like any good poker player knows, you always portray just the opposite of what you are.Read ’em and weep:)

⭐This book will change your view on your faith, for the better. A great read. Intended for men. But any woman reading this (and you should) will know much more about your man than they will ever tell you. All the secrets are right here. Eldredge has a new take on how men should see themselves in God’s creation. As real men….not just being another “nice guy” who goes to church every Sunday. Wild, adventurous, and true to yourself, as God intended you to be. If you are tired of our culture today and the emasculation of men, this book will support your effort to return to what men are supposed to be. Men have an adventure to live, a battle to win, and a beauty to rescue. Purchase this book, read and enjoy, and rediscover what you are really here for.

⭐Wild at Heart is a most excellent book that begs the question of what has happened to males in our post feminist world. Decades of misinformation and cultural erosion have rendered most men absent or impotent in our (specifically the American) society, which this book seeks to explain. Academic blurring of the genders, special interest propaganda and social engineering have all endeavoured to homoginize men and women without regard to what makes each sex unique. Make no mistake, this is no bleeding heart psycho babel attempt to discern what ails us, nor is it some chest thumping macho chauvinist work which makes a caricature of real masculinity. Quite the contrary, the book addresses both of these mentalities as the farce they are and seeks rather to understand the true driving force of a mans heart, and what God intended for him to be. Despite the unabashed Christian stance of the book, this is not an attempt to convert through indoctrination. Regardless of what your views on religion are, the books applicability is similar to that of Alcoholics Anonymous. You don’t have to believe to see that it works. My atheist brother, who provided me with my first copy, gained a lot of understanding from reading this. That being said, though the book focuses primarily on men, Eldridge spends quite a bit of time also exploring women and how they relate to us. I would encourage any woman to take the time to read this book, as it will not only illuminate much of the heart of the men in your life, it will also directly deal with some of the impacts they (especially Fathers) have had on you, whether positive or negative. Most importantly, Eldridge does not simply point out what is wrong. He goes on to show how these failures can be addressed and amended. How you can start working to be the man you should be, rather than accept the shadow of manhood that you are. How to move on from the failures of your past, and embrace rather the wildness that is buried in your heart.I highly recommend this book to anyone, male or female, old or young, Christian or not. As a father of boys, this book has helped me to recognize the failures of my own father and strive to not repeat them. As a husband, it has helped me understand how to be a servant to my wife, and a protector to our family. As a man, it has opened my eyes to the driving desires of my own heart, helped me recognize the lies I tell myself and have been told, and helped me understand the importance of what it really means to be a Man.

⭐Since reading this book years ago, I still manage to purchase it as a gift for friends and family. Definitely a great insight for any man to understand their relationship with God, their relationships with women and how love is meant to be.

⭐I did find the beginning a little deep. But this is from a womans perspective! However, I found it extremely helpfull & very relevant to the problems that my daughter is experiencing with her fiance! Certainly leads to a better understanding of the oposite sex!!I have also ordered ‘Captivating’ ( which is the same kind of book but from a womans pont of view) for her to read. I know that my daughter will be more encouraged to take her further step into marriage after reading these books. Really enlightening & down to earth! Bless you John & Stasi.

⭐This book is for anyone wanting to learn a man’s heart, I suggest maybe getting a notepad and taking notes to ask any man who’s heart you are trying to get to know questions so as to create conversation. It is an interesting read. I haven’t currently finished reading it, but I believe it is beneficial!

⭐This is a superp book at looking at man from a real Christian perspective. it looks at how past experiences and childhoods can affect us in the future but also how to fix them by getting God involved. if you feel your worthless or affected by your past experiences or bad childhoods this is the book to get!

⭐Captures all the reasons why the men in church have been so dormant. Examines the instincts of Man as God intended before the Fall, and gives a great insight as to how suppression of these instincts affects the home
