Description

In Washington, D.C., a homeless man takes an assassin’s bullet and dies in Commander Gray Pierce’s arms. A bloody coin clutched in the dead man’s hand–an ancient relic that can be traced back to the Greek Oracle of Delphi–is the key to a conspiracy that dates back to the Cold War and threatens the very foundation of humanity. For what if it were possible to bioengineer the next great prophet–a new Buddha, Muhammad, or even Jesus? Would this Second Coming be a boon . . . or would it initiate a chain reaction that would result in the extinction of humankind?

Vital seconds are ticking rapidly away as Pierce races across the globe in search of answers, one step ahead of ruthless killers determined to reclaim the priceless artifact. Suddenly the future of all things is balanced on the brink between heaven and hell–and salvation or destruction rests in the hands of remarkable children.

User’s Reviews

Review “Lots of absorbing scientific information and tantalizing sentences.” — Publishers Weekly”Rollins combines real-world science with high-octane action to create rousing stories of adventure that are as exciting as any movie.” (Chicago Sun-Times)”Once again, the action is nonstop.” (Sacramento Bee)”The perfect escape novel, an edge of-your-seat read.” (Knoxville News-Sentinel)”Rollins has outdone himself with this fabulous mix of history, science, and adventure that will easily increase his growing number of fans.” (Library Journal)”Go out and buy James Rollins’s latest saga. He just keeps getting better and better.” (The Barnstable Patriot) From the Author About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) From the Inside Flap What if you could bioengineer the next great world prophet: scientifically produce the next Buddha, the next Muhammad, or the next Jesus? Would it markt the Second Coming or initiate a chain reaction with disastrous consequences?A master of combining historical and religious intrigue with edge-of-your-seat adventure, New York Times bestselling author James Rollins brings back SIGMA Force to battle a group of rogue scientists who’ve unleashed a bioengineering project that could bring about the extinction of humankind. In Washington D.C., a homeless man dies in Commander Gray Pierce’s arms, shot by an assassin’s bullet. But the death leaves behind a greater mystery: a bloddy coin found clutched in the dead man’s hand, a ancient relic that can be traced back to the Greek Oracle of Delphi. As ruthless hunters search for the stolen artefact, Gray Pierce discovers that the cold is the key to unlocking a plot that dates back to the Cold Ward and threatens the very foundation of humanity. An international think tank of scientists known as the Jasons has discovered a way to bioengineer autistic children who show savant talents-mathematical geniuses, statistical masterminds, brilliant conceptual artists-into something far greater and far more frightening, in hopes of creating a world prophet for the new millennium, one to be manipulated to create a new era of global peace…a peace on their own terms.Halfway around the world, a man wakes up in the hospital bed with no memory of who he is, knowing only that he’s a prisoner in a subterranean research facility. With the help of three unusual children, he makes his escape across a mountainous and radioactive countryside, pursued by savage hunters bred in same laboratory. But his goal is not escape, nor even survival. In order to thwart a plot to wipe out a quarter of the world’s population, he must sacrifice all, even the children who rescued him. From ancient Greek temples to glittering mausoleums, from the slums of India to the toxic ruins of Russia, two men must race against time to solve a mystery that dates back to the first famous oracle of history-the Greek Oracle of Delphi. But one question remains: Will the past be enough to save the future? From the Back Cover PRAISE FOR THE JUDAS STRAIN”Cannibals, man eating squid, a bacteria that may wipe out humanity-Rollins’s high octane spectacle has it all.” — People””James Rollins is a master of international action and intrigue…[The Judas Strain] is as thrilling as any blockbuster summer action film…Heart pumping action…guaranteed to sweep away readers.” — Richmond Times-Dispatch”A fast paced meld of intrigue, medical thriller, and historical mystery that owns echoes of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code and Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain…Rollins invests The Judas Strain with his characteristic command of detail, along with a creeping dread. The world won’t have to wait for gradual environmental calamity. It is about to be visited upon us in a matter of days. And he makes it all seem all too plausible.” — Post and Courier (Charleston)”Rollins Effortlessly Blends Science and superstition in grand tradition of Clive Cussler and David Morrel to make The Judas Strain the best pure action thriller in recent memory.” — Providence Journal”You won’t want to put this adventure thrill ride down…There’s a code to crack, a disease to cure, a villain to outsmart, words of an angel to translate. And, just to to make going to sleep out of the question, the fate of every man, woman, and child on Earth hangs in the balance.” — Knoxville News Sentinel”Rollins does his job: thrills promised, then delivered.” — Tampa Tribune

⭐ James Rollins is my FAVORITE author!!! I love his books, and just when I’ve declared my love for the last book read, I read a new one and fall hard again! This story is part of the Sigma Force series and it just grabs you and holds you until the end. So be forewarned ~ get your stuff done before reading this book, because once you begin, you won’t care about anything else until you’ve finished. It’s hard to tear away from book! I won’t spoil anything in this review, but let me just say that one of the things I love about Mr. Rollins books is that afterwards he separates fact from fiction and it’s VERY hard not to read it first, but I remain good and read story first! Let’s just say that after reading story and then the “Fact from Fiction” part ~ I was gobsmacked! So much so in fact that I made this an extra credit book for my homeschooling kid to read too! Great work Mr. Rollins!

⭐ Sigma Force novels are formulaic, but the formula works: ancient history, new mystery, deadly enemy. James Rollins is a great storyteller and I love his books. You can easily get attached to the characters. In this book, I found myself crying near the end (yeah, I know, silly huh!) but the characters – autistic children – touched my heart. In this book, the children have been augmented to allow the enemy to tap into their greatest talent. The story has you sitting on the edge of your seat and you find yourself rooting for the children, who to me are the heroes in this book. Yeah, Sigma Force was there, but the kids – awesome! One of the better in the Sigma Force series.

⭐ I’m addicted to this series, as the writing is so solid. Yes, it does get a bit formulaic in the sense that you know that in any given situation something will happen that will ALWAYS present bigger issues (yet who can resist this?). What saves this from being too much to take in is that the quality research into real-life scenarios makes all the fiction entirely believable. Rollins has a lifetime fan in me.

⭐ Not often that I read a fictional book and actually learn something in the process. Goes without saying that Rollins writes fast paced action adventure stories and this one will not disappoint. I highly rate it as a page turner that I personally found hard to put down. Rollins often incorporates bits of science and history into his stories. But what really surprised me about this book was the volume incorporated regarding the field of autism study, the ancient Greek oracles, their relation to northern India, and the modern day gypsy. Throw in the Soviet legacy of their horrific handling of mining for their nuclear programs, the large swaths of contamination left behind in addition to Chernobyl, and you have more factual information than any fictional book I have read. If you are into this genre, and not interested in character development, I highly recommend this tale.

⭐ When Commander Gray Pierce makes eye contact with a vagrant, he winds up with a dying man in his arms. Dr. Polk was shot by a sniper, but would have died of radiation poisoning within days. He left behind a mysterious ancient Greek coin and a bewildered daughter. Since he died right outside top-secret government agency Sigma, they send a team, headed by Commander Pierce, to retrace his last steps, leading to danger in India and the remote mountains of Russia. Meanwhile, things at Sigma Headquarters in Washington get exciting when Director Painter Crowe winds up with custody of a little girl with amazing drawing abilities and a strange steel implant in her skull. A third adventure befalls another member of Sigma being held deep in the Ural Mountains of Russia when he escapes with three special savant children and goes on the run through the forest near a radioactive lake. It seems the Russians have been conducting secret experiments on a special group of autistic savants with roots in Gypsy culture, and now one man is poised to make use of the technology toward his own ends…after killing millions and instilling world-wide panic, of course.I’ve been there for all of Sigma’s adventures, and this is the best one yet. Other Sigma novels have contained a bit too much chasing around, but this time it all worked smoothly. I’m not sure if the third storyline was the magic ingredient or if Rollins finally got it just right, but this time out the action was balanced well with the plot, making for a page-turning read. Though I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about the Sigma novels, my interest in them has been renewed.

⭐ While not as ridiculous as the previous book in the series (which had good natured cannibals), this one was almost on par. i thought the whole cabal was a bit over the top as well as the entire plot with the Russians. Even though the plot is ridiculous i had a hard time putting it down.

⭐ Well Dave, if you loved this book so much, why did it take over two years to finish reading it? In two words: Kindle Keyboard. I was at the 100 page mark (still had the bookmark in place) in this 533 page thriller back in 2010, when I bought my Kindle Keyboard. After I got hooked on my Kindle I had a hard time returning to paperbacks/hardbacks. At first most of Rollins books were higher priced, and since I already had the book, I just could not see double dipping. But then I read a post where someone just finished reading Ice Hunt and they loved it. Well, I read Ice Hunt years ago and I clicked on the link and saw it was only $3.99 and that led me to The Last Oracle, which was only $3.99 as well. That did it! I jumped at the chance to get back into the world of SIGMA force. Over the top action? Yes there was! And I loved it! I certainly plan to pick up the next adventure in Kindle format real soon ( The Doomsday Key: A Sigma Force Novel ). At $3.99 I just cannot pass them by or wait any longer. It feels good to be home again with SIGMA Force. Now, if only the Brad Thor e-books would go to $3.99.

⭐ K.F. Zuzulo is the author of A Genie in the House of Saud: Zubis Rises Buy the popcorn: This novel reads like a fast-paced action movie. It has suspense, crackling diaglogue, mysticism, and mystery. The opening scenes introduce us to a link that goes back thousands of years and the Oracle at Delphi. Cut to 1959 and a tie-in with Mother Russia and burgeoning Cold War scientific experiments on children who have unusual genetic abilities of prophecy and foresight. This is then threaded to current day Sigma Force and a scientist who seeks their help and who also knows the mystery that connects the children to Russia to the Oracle. Got that, so far? Rollins keeps many balls in the air at one time; there are also Gypsies and Punjabi Indians and secret U.S. governmental agencies fighting a sort of civil war. Don’t be discouraged if you lose your own footing, just as an old friend and Sigma operative, Monk, loses his footing in the slippery Urul Mountains. He quickly regains his balance and his motivation as he leads some desperate “special” children to safety, even while his colleague Gray Pierce tracks the same leads on the other side of the world. The reader will also regain the perspective of the original plot — having to do with prophetic abilities enhanced by radiation and genes. As usual, Rollins has enough research-backed snippets of fact that you’re intrigued enough to pass over some of the unbelievable get-away scenarios. But those same scenes would make for some great breathtaking action on the big screen.

⭐ Five stars say what I’m just not qualified to say. I think this has been my favorite of Sigma books, but that’s how I feel every time. I enjoyed this book so much. I’ve come to know and love the characters and looking forward to the next “sigma force” is just down right exhilarating. If you love history mixed with mystery, human heroes with heart and the capacity to give all, and if you’ve never read James Rollins maybe now is the time to pick one up. He’s never disappointed. The Jewish children of WWII Naxi Germany grabbed me and haven’t let go. I find myself still thinking of them and wondering just how much we don’t know about that time in history.

⭐ This is an interesting story line that has been adapted to a major nuclear problem in Russia. A super set of children is being bred to assist a crazed person start a new order in a world after a disaster is planned to kill millions of people around the globe. A secret team of special forces races against the bad guys to reclaim an item supposedly used by the Greek Oracle of Delphi. The key to the story lies deep in the mystery of Greek mythology and modern day nuclear prolifieration. It’s an interesting tale, but a bit drawn out. The reader will appreciate the mystery at every turn as well as the dangers the team faces. It has a bit of action too.
