Description

James Rollins, the New York Times bestselling master of nail-biting suspense and historical mystery, combines cutting-edge biotechnology with a centuries-old secret in an apocalyptic story that reveals where humankind is truly headed

The Doomsday Key

At Princeton University, a famed geneticist dies inside a biohazard lab. In Rome, a Vatican archaeologist is found dead in St. Peter’s Basilica. In Africa, a U.S. senator’s son is slain outside a Red Cross camp. The three murders on three continents bear a horrifying connection: all the victims are marked by a Druidic pagan cross burned into their flesh.

The bizarre murders thrust Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma Force into a race against time to solve a riddle going back centuries, to a ghastly crime against humanity hidden within a cryptic medieval codex. The fi rst clue is discovered inside a mummifi ed corpse buried in an English peat bog—a gruesome secret that threatens America and the world.

Aided by two women from his past—one his exlover, the other his new partner—Gray must piece together the horrifying truth. But the revelations come at a high cost, and to save the future, Gray will have to sacrifi ce one of the women at his side. That alone might not be enough, as the true path to salvation is revealed in a dark prophecy of doom.

Sigma Force confronts humankind’s greatest threat in an adventure that races from the Roman Coliseum to the icy peaks of Norway, from the ruins of medieval abbeys to the lost tombs of Celtic kings. The ultimate nightmare is locked within a talisman buried by a dead saint—an ancient artifact known as the Doomsday Key.

User’s Reviews

Review “This guy doesn’t write novels–he builds roller coasters….Rollins excels at combining action and history with larger-than-life characters….A must for pure action fans.” (Booklist)”Rollins’s prose explodes off the page in a twisty and compelling thriller….Swashbuckling adventure, elite team effort, and religious symbology all add up to another gripping andterrifying read….An amazing and brilliant technothriller that might be his best to date.” — Library Journal (starred review)”James Rollins knows adventure.” — Chicago Sun Times From the Author About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker.”The Story Teller’s StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James’ travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing “seminars.” James’ mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ James Rollins is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read several of his books that revolve around the DARPA team. He certainly does his due diligence with historical facts but sometimes it’s a bit much and doesn’t seem all that necessary . His information is sometimes a bit heavy to absorb and takes away from the overall story. I won’t stop reading his books because I do enjoy the fact that his stories contain factual information. I just wish it were a bit on the lighter side.

⭐ James Rollins has penned a number of excellent escapist novels. I would recommend Ice Hunt , Subterranean , Amazonia and Sandstorm to anyone who enjoys adventuring science/techno-thrillers. I would be more reluctant to do so with this installment of his Sigma series though. This is yet another thoroughly researched, keep-surviving-by-the-skin-of-your-teeth adventure. Less pronounced in this book yet still present is Rollins’ tendency to move from cliffhanger to cliffhanger, with small breathers in between. It is a book to enjoy during a flight or a rainy weekend – and it will keep you turning pages for hours. However, for a number of reasons this would had been a much better book had it not been yet another Sigma sequel.Sigma simply does not work that good for me. I cannot buy the small number of people undertaking such critical tasks. In fact, Sigma is so understaffed that not only has to rely on certified idiots (sorry Kowalski, but you know it is true…) but even the director himself has to go into the field. They operate all over the world under thin pretexts, they do not even seem to be official sanctioned. And to add insult to injury, most new recruits seem to suffer the Star Trek’s away-party odd crew-member fate…On top of that, Sigma seems to deal with one crisis after another while under attack from both a shadow power group and other government secret services. For a writer who takes great pride in the accuracy of his facts interweaved with his fiction, this requires a continuous leap of faith.I can understand how having a book franchise can work for both the writer and his publisher. The first has a set framework of characters to weave his new plot with whereas the later has a more or less loyal fun-base to fall back to. However, they should both keep in mind that this does not always work for the reader. This is a 3.5 stars novel but I rounded it up because Rollins has given a number of techno-thrillers I greatly enjoyed in the past.

⭐ I’m not sure why I waited so long to read this book. Normally when a new Rollins is released I’m at the store the same day. Perhaps it was because I was afraid the goodness couldn’t last forever, but I should have had better faith in Mr. Rollins. The Doomsday Key was fabulous. It contains all the necessary ingredients for a successful smörgåsbord of action-adventure-thriller-suspense entertainment. There are certain criteria you need for an endeavor like this: the good guys, the bad guys, comedic relief (oh, Kowalski), conspiracy rooted in historical truth (popes and prophecies), gunfights and explosions, caves, caves that cave in, a deadly disease, a finger in a leather bag with ancient symbols burned on the outside, a good dosing of betrayal, some stone circles and smelly peat bogs, oh and a few cliffhangers thrown in for good measure. It’s all here! This time around, Sigma is back to work with a shadowy double agent operative named Seichan who also works with the Guild (see: bad guys). We still don’t know if Seichan is true to us (and by us I mean Sigma, of course) or if she’s just out for her own benefit. Either way, if Commander Gray Pierce doesn’t work with her, the whole world could be taken over by a nasty spore; a fungus that grows mushrooms inside of you.Yeah, gross.Doomsday is the sixth Sigma novel, and it could be my favorite. Sometimes after the first few books in a series an author teeters out, the books become formulaic and predictable, but Doomsday is none of these. This one is more mature than its predecessors; I even got teary at one point toward the end. Not to mention there was so much information related to true historical facts that my head was spinning, and I came out the other side smarter for it. Google Saint Malachy and his prophecies, or the legend of the Black Madonna, or colony collapse disorder, and you’ll see what I mean; but you won’t understand how they all go together until you read this book. It really makes you think… if the facts and details used to make a plot are real, what if Rollins’ theories as put down in fiction are actually true? And that, that right there, is why I love his books. I suggest you run your person out to the closest book store and start with Sandstorm (Sigma prequel) and work your way up from there.5 stars. His next book is not Sigma, but I love his individual adventures too, so I can’t wait for the Altar of Eden on December 29.

⭐ Conspiracies abound and the Sigma team has only a limited amount of time to stop a worldwide catastrophe from occurring. The Guild has a diabolical plan and the only clues Sigma has are a series of victims all marked with a pagan symbol. What is the connection between the destruction of a refugee camp, the death of a priest, and a book called the Doomsday Book?James Rollins excels at weaving together fact and fiction to produce high energy thrillers. THE DOOMSDAY KEY is no exception! The pace never relents as the members of the Sigma Force are in a race against time where enemies can just as easily turn into allies, and vice versa. The stakes are never higher as James Rollins ramps up the tension with each new revelation.THE DOOMSDAY KEY is the sixth book in the Sigma Force series and can be read as a stand alone. James Rollins does an excellent job at introducing the characters (and there are quite a few of them, as one might expect) and showing their past histories and relationships with one another. I suspect, however, that a reader already immersed in the series would appreciate some of the nuances of the tale a tad more than someone new to the series, if only because of the conflicted relationships with characters like Seichan.THE DOOMSDAY KEY is a dramatic adventure tale, blending together conspiracy theories from the past and present to create a horrifying scenario. James Rollins is absolutely brilliant at taking seemingly unbelievable situations and theories and making them seem plausible. The plot is stunning in its diabolical audacity but impossible to put down. Superb!!COURTESY OF BOOK ILLUMINATIONS

⭐ I really enjoy this author. Love how he brings different fields together, history, science, religion – but not too much of any one thing. Gifted story teller. So exciting when you have multiple books with the same characters as well as stand alone books. Am (slowly) working through his large collection of reads!

⭐ Rollins has written another Sigma Force novel that will make you think. Since I have enjoyed all the novels in the series, I pre-ordered this but I am so far behind on reading that I just finished it last night. The story focuses on the owner of Viatus Corporation, a bioengineering company who has plans to “save” the world. The Guild wants to find the lost “Doomsday Key” and of our favorite characters from previous books are here as the two groups begin their search… Rollins does a great job reintroducing his characters and explaining their relationships to each other. We learn more about the enigmatic agent Seichan but there are still questions left unanswered about her.The story begins with a plague in England in 1066 A.D; then there’s a plague from the future, weapons of destruction that are all too real, dying bees, prophecies come true and more. As our characters explain, soon we will reach a point where there are far too many people on this planet to feed. Who will decide who lives or who will die? What would you do if you had to make these very hard choices? How would you “save the world?”There is a characteristic Rollins cliffhanger ending that will keep us looking for the next Sigma Force novel. Overall I’d rate this as 4 ½, if only Amazon would find a way to let us give ¼ or ½ star ratings. I think this would help us to rate more accurately.

⭐ When was the last time you read or in my case listened to an audio book that took your breath away? If it’s been a long time, then you’re in for a treat.Action, great characters, fast moving plot, twist and turns, tension and suspense all geared to take your breath away and does. And the quick switches, I found myself yelling at the CD player, “No!! Don’t you dare!!!”.My recommendation don’t start listening to the book in the evening, because you’ll be up until dawn because you won’t want to stop. Since I’m retired I put in the first CD early in the morning and before I knew it I spent the whole day listening but it was worth it.My only criticism and it had nothing to do with the book but I really do wish producers of audio books would strongly consider hiring both a man and woman for the narrations – some men just don’t seem to be able to pull off playing a female. The tempo is wrong, the pitch is too high, while Fernandez wasn’t as bad as some and he didn’t ruin the experience but to tell the truth it could have been better.

⭐ In the covert world of Sigma force James Rollins continues to astound with exotic and hair raising action based on a plausable plot. His sense of timing, humor and plot development coupled with an endearing character development makes his novels extremely enjoyable to read as well as instant classics. I love this guy’s imagination and can’t help but think he may have been a great animal psychologist as a veterinarian because he surely knows about human psychology and how to motivate and excite us.The Doomsday key addresses two of the world’s greatest problems, famine and overpopulation. There are very industrious and well meaning people trying to address these problems on a global scale but sometimes good intentions go awry because the industrialists are myopic, trusting and so caught up in their vision that they fail to see how evil people and organizations can infaltrate and manipulate their sense of humanity. When this happens Sigma must get involved in a very decisive and powerful way but even Sigma is not immune to manipulation and must make alliances with misguided people.

⭐ This was the 6th book I’ve read in the series and I was not disappointed. I’m looking for books that just make me relax and take me away for awhile. I enjoy the characters – each has thier own personality & so far in the series I get to learn a bit more about each one. I’m not into analyzing books, I just want to read them. The stories are good, love the spy meets Indiana Jones theme. The story moves, it doesn’t get stuck, where you know you have to get through a boring part to get to the good stuff. I will continue to read the rest of the series & recommend to anyone who likes what I like

⭐ Another excellent Sigma Force thriller. A pathogen is killing people disguised as food. You can eat all you want but at are to death. Sigma has to stop it and the people who are PURPOSELY releasing it into the world. Great characters, fast paced, great plotting.
