Description

On the surface, Chief Dove Carnahan is a true trailblazer who would do anything to protect the rural Pennsylvanian town where she has lived all fifty of her years. Traditional and proud of her blue-collar sensibilities, Dove is loved by her community—but she hides a dark and self-destructive streak, fed by a secret she has kept since she was sixteen.

When a girl is beaten to death and her body tossed down a fiery sinkhole in an abandoned coal town, Dove is faced with solving the most shocking crime of her law enforcement career. She identifies the girl as a member of a local family of petty criminals. To further complicate things, the man convicted of killing Dove’s mother is released from prison and reveals a startling accusation. Dove now must face the chilling parallels between her own family’s trauma and that of the dead girl’s.

“A darkly compelling look into how the past colors the present, this psychological thriller will linger” (RT Book Reviews) with you long after you turn the final page.

User’s Reviews

Review Praise for ANGELS BURNING “In Angels Burning, Tawni O’Dell ratchets up the suspense with stunning twists and turns that send the unsuspecting reader careening toward a shocking ending. Angels Burning is a no-holds-barred, page-turning, perfectly crafted thriller that kept me reading long into the night. I can only hope that this is not the last we hear of O’Dell’s feisty and complicated protagonist Dove Carnahan.” (Heather Gudenkauf, author of THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE )”With a writer as insightful as Tawni O’Dell, and a protagonist as fascinating as Dove Carnahan, from the first page you brace yourself for the hard truths of the town of Campbell’s Run. Angels Burning lives up to every bit of its promise. This is a terrific book.” (Jamie Mason, author of THREE GRAVES FULL and MONDAY’S LIE )“O’Dell returns with a captivating mystery… Filled with surprising twists and turns, this whodunit in a sullen town is a page-turner.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Compelling, fast-paced…O’Dell’s latest is character-driven fiction at its best.” (Library Journal, starred review)”Without doubt, Angels Burning is the best mystery I’ve read all year. Tawni O’Dell’s characters are at once brutal and tender, baffling and wise. They will hold you transfixed while this story sneaks up and breaks your heart.” (Carla Norton, New York Times Bestselling Author )”A feast of a story. O’Dell handles family, friendships and toxic love with a ferocity reminiscent of Pat Conroy.” (Stella Cameron, New York Times Bestselling Author )”O’Dell’s language is as beautiful as her setting is bleak, and her characters live and breathe as they struggle over the defining line between victim and survivor. Angels Burning is a fine mystery, but O’Dell is also working on a broader canvas: the rust belt of the human heart.” (Matthew Guinn, author of THE SCRIBE and THE RESURRECTIONIST )”This book had me on the edge of my seat. I promise—you won’t be able to put it down.” (New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak )“O’Dell does a stellar job of depicting the despair of those who live in a blighted rural community, while providing a complex study of the human soul and the fragile line that’s crossed when someone chooses to end another person’s life.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)“A darkly compelling look into how the past colors the present, this psychological thriller will linger with readers.” (RT Book Reviews, four-star review)“Impossible to put down.” (Booklist)“O’Dell shows why she is among the bestsellers. ⭐ I’ve been a fan of Tawni O’Dell since her first release, Back Roads, and her most recent novel, Angels Burning, did not disappoint me. Set in the rural, Western Pennsylvanian region where O’Dell herself grew up, O’Dell is accurately able to capture the hopes and desires as well as the struggles and disappointments of the people of this hard-scrapple area where coal mining once boomed. This is a murder mystery, one that local police chief Dove Carnahan means to solve in spite of the lack of cooperation, half-truths and misdirected finger-pointing by the murdered girl’s family. As the investigation moves forward, Chief Carnahan is also forced to face the repercussions of an act of violence in her own family, the long-ago murder of her mother, especially now that the convicted murderer has been released from jail after serving his sentence and what that mean to her and her siblings now. The parallel loss of innocent life for the murdered girl and the loss of innocence for Dove when she herself was a girl inspire Chief Carnahan to unravel the mystery of the former and to reveal finally the truth of the latter.

⭐ Tawni O’Dell once again doesn’t disappoint; I have no idea how I will wait for her next book. Like all the others, I couldn’t put this one down. Her characters and descriptions of the Pennsylvania coal country are so vivid and multi-dimensional that I always feel as thought I personally have been there and have known them. I miss the characters when I finish the book. Each book leaves me wondering, speculating, what happened next and wanting more.Every chapter flows smoothly even with the twists and turns that are O’Dell’s signature. I love the way she intertwines past and present and connects the characters so deftly. I found her book, Coal Run on the Oprah Book Club list, have subsequently read all of her works and read them typically in one sitting, staying up all night to do so.

⭐ I love Tawni O’Dell’s female heroes. These women have seen the tough side of life and often had difficult childhoods. They don’t putup with fools, especially male fools. However, Tawni’s female hero retains her feminine side. She is a good cook and she empathiseswith kids who have had it tough like her. Yet she is an enigma, not wanting to get in too deep where relationships with men are concerned. The lady is very much her own woman and can survive on her own. Yet she is not lacking in feminine wit, practicality and sympathy for theunderdog. She hates bullies.

⭐ Tawny O’Dell is a fantastic writer. I can’t believe she is not better known. I’ve read every book and love them all–only wish there were more! This one did not disappoint.

⭐ My favorite of her’s, (so far!) LOVED the main character… loved how she could interact with people comfortably, regardless of what side of the tracks they are living on. The main character is strong, independent and real. And her sister is pretty cool, also.

⭐ I enjoy Odell’s writing style and her ability to create a plausible plot. However, this one had a few flaws that made some of the events too whacky to believe.

⭐ This is yet another really well written novel. It would be an improvement if the author could rid herself of the endless, pointless descriptions of whatever it is everyone is wearing.

⭐ Thoroughly enjoyable book. Loved the main character and the story line kept me engrossed throughout. Murder mystery, small town life, family secrets from the past. Great combination for any thriller / whodunit.

⭐ Well, I would have given 5 stars except for 1 tiny detail that for some reason, as a real bred, born and raised Western Pennsylvania woman, bugs the heck out of me. I am firmly entrenched in the middle class, not a Truly, more like a Carnahan without the tragedies. I don’t know anyone who goes into so much detail about what they are wearing, planning to wear, shouldn’t have worn and worst of all – where it was purchased. I appreciate the author’s attempt to be more “one of us” and less “One of Us” by mentioning T.J. Maxx and Kohl’s. The other point I find condescending is the “Book Club Talking Points” at the end of the book. Really? I’ve been reading since I was 3. To me the characters just are. They do what they have done. They will either tell us why, it will be obvious or it will remain a mystery as in the case of Champ. They become real people to me. I willingly suspend all disbelief and accept. I do judge the author and I will ALWAYS buy her books because she has produced some solid gold with only one “clinker” (the stony residue of burned coal) in the bunch. The aforementioned “One of Us”

⭐ This is another great story with similar writing to Tawni’s other books, all unique stories yet familiar background. I love reading her books and this one is one of my now favorites! She always has serious, dramatic stories with a witty, dry lead character and the humor is just right up my alley. This lead character in particular was one of her best.
