Description

When Richard Chapman offers to host his younger brother’s bachelor party he expects a certain amount of debauchery. He sends his wife, Kristin, and his young daughter off to his mother-in-law’s for the weekend and he opens his Westchester home to his brother’s friends and their hired entertainment. What he does not expect is this: bacchanalian drunkenness, a dangerously intimate moment in his guest bedroom, and two naked women stabbing and killing their Russian bodyguards before driving off into the night

In the aftermath, Richard’s life rapidly spirals into nightmare. The police throw him out of his home, now a crime scene, his investment banking firm puts him on indefinite leave, and his wife finds herself unable to forgive him for the moment he shared with a dark-haired girl in the guestroom. But the dark-haired girl, Alexandra, faces a much graver danger. Stolen from her family as a teenager and locked away in hotel rooms and a closely-guarded cottage, Alexandra has been held captive by oligarchs for years. But now, in one breathless, violent night, she is free, running to escape the police who will arrest her and the gangsters who will kill her in a heartbeat. A captivating, chilling story about shame, scandal and the sex trade, The Guest Room is a riveting novel from a great storyteller.

User’s Reviews

Review A New York Times Bestseller”Although the subject matter is dark and tragic, Bohjalian’s deft and light-handed storytelling makes this book a compelling and captivating read. In particular, Bohjalian’s treatment of guilt and paranoia is realistic and downright scary.” —The Vancouver Sun”Edge-of-the-seat momentum that propels the reader straight to the last page. . . . The Guest Room promises to enlighten and entertain.” —The Washington Post”Always gripping. . . . Venturing into crime-thriller territory familiar to fans of Harlan Coben, Bohjalian’s page-turner about an average Joe caught up in sordid events beyond his control resonates with chilling plausibility.” —Booklist”Hard to put down, or ever forget.” —St. Louis Post Dispatch –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ Quick read, not sure the back and forth between Alexandra’s previous life and current event was necessary. The use of the f-word was excessive and seemed like a Steven Segal or Bruce Willis bad movie.

⭐ Gripping from start to finish! Couldn’t stop reading this book!

⭐ Chris Bohjalian is a good writer, every book has a very different story. He does not rely on a formula, but this one is a disappointment, not sure if it is the story, or the way it’s told, but it is not up to his usual standard.

⭐ I wouldn’t know what ‘up to his other standards’ meant, and was glad I hand’t read his other books. As a writer myself, found that an empty, snarky kind of comment. Not even an explanation, I found the ‘review’ suspect. The book was well written, well paced and contained an interesting cast of characters. Not once did my interest fail, and to tell the truth, I even cried a little at the end. (And, no, that is not a spoiler.) And, no, I don’t know this writer, but I will enjoy exploring his work. I recommend you do, too.

⭐ I was all set to give this book 4 or 5 stars until the last chapter. Was the author under time restraints to have finished the story in this manner? Did someone else finish it? The ending was nonsense and insulted my intelligence. Or maybe the author had a sequel in mind. I just don’t get it.

⭐ A really interesting and harrowing story of how one night can change people’s lives.Richard is a wealthy, married businessman with a beautiful home and one daughter. He agrees to host his younger brother’s bachelor party which leads to a night no one will ever forget. The hired entertainment for the night are actually sex slaves, brought to the U.S. from Russia, part of a sex trafficking operation. The girls fear that their lives are in immediate danger by their captors and use the night of the party to try to escape. The book then follows the points of view of Richard, Alexandria, one of the girls who was forced into the sex trade, as well as Richard’s wife and their daughter. While the topic of the book is definitely a heavy one, I found the story to be both heartbreaking and well written.

⭐ The story shows how a casual mistake can end, change or ruin lives. Also how inhuman the sex slave trade is. Strongly recommended as a good but unsettling read

⭐ Real life situations , proof of how your life can change on a dime through a mistake by your spouse! Really enjoyed it. The ending was a surprise.

⭐ A sad tale of how one’s life can change for the worse without warning. The author gave me a completely new perspective of the sex trade and how tragic the lives of young girls become. No one does this because they want to. This book will touch your heart.

⭐ The book is well written. The characters fully developed and the description of something innocent going totally out of control is excellent. Enjoy
