Description
Kelly McCullough, author of Drawn Blades, presents another Fallen Blade adventure with Aral Kingslayer…Aral Kingslayer has nothing to lose—and only justice to gain. Torn apart by the death of his goddess, he must avenge her in order to save himself from being lost forever….It’s been nine long years since the death of his patron, Namara, and exalted assassin Aral Kingslayer desperately misses the thrill and glory of being a higher power of justice. Now he is haunted by the ghosts of the past—and by the ghost of the lost goddess herself. When Namara calls upon Aral in a dream to seek justice for her death and the ruination of her temple, Aral must obtain the help of his fellow former Blades and his Shade familiar, Triss, to pursue the vengeance he knows Namara deserves. Even if it means attacking Heaven’s Son—and going against one of their own—in a bloody battle of epic proportions…
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I am incredibly disappointed in this final installment of the blade series. As previously noted by others1) The pacing is slow for large swaths2) The ending feels rushed3) Way to much Aral the Angsty and Uncertain4) The ending is just stupidIn addition, people behave in a way that makes no sense. SPOILER follows: For example, when Aral is on the verge of killing the big bad, the big bad spends all his energy on a helpless Kelos and doesn’t even try to defend himself from the swords inches from his face? There are many similar issues throughout the book. The ending could have been so much better and more. For example, the series has long teased a potential direct conflict between the Blades and the gods. But, rather than a bang the series ends with a whimper.
⭐I really have mixed feelings about this book. One the one hand, I think this is an excellent addition to the Fallen Blade series. If I understand correctly, it is the last, and that really saddens me. Overall, this book was a great ride and an excellent story, and I am sad to see it end. Still, if your a fan of the test of the Fallen Blade novels, you still need to read this epic book (and if your not, go back and buy or re-read the rest of the novels!) This is an epic tail, with Aral and Triss in top form, and I couldn’t put this book down1On the other hand, the ending seemed really rushed. It felt like it was done in haste, like most of the story was done with love, and the end was just ‘I have to move on, I am so done..” and it was thrown together. It doesn’t fit the rest of the series pace, nor do I feel satisfied this is the end (Assuming it is the end. I would still welcome another novel, and wish there will be more. I really love Aral, and Faran and want to know more about them, how they further develop both individually and together (Could they possibly be together? Not sure if it is a popular idea but I support it!)
⭐I must confess before this review that I’m a solid Kelly McCullough fan.. I’ve read every one of the ‘blade’ books and after reading this one, I don’t see where he could go from here to carry the main character forward but if he does, I’ll buy it!! I must admit that the first of the blade books were the most fascinating.. the entire premise of the story was great.. the shades are fascinating creatures as well. I don’t go into detail about characters too much in reviews because I don’t want to spoil the story or the story line for someone else. I usually just give my thoughts on the quality of the writing and whether or not it held my attention. As I said earlier, the first 3 of the blade books were the most well developed and attention holding. This one was a fast read because I knew all the ‘players’ and what to expect from them.
⭐Good story. I’m trying to figure out why this series isn’t more popular, although I do have some ideas. Even though I enjoyed the series, I am conflicted on whether I will read another book with the same characters. I thought the ending was too abrupt and the journey to the old school/temple took too long. I also don’t think this book was as good as the previous book, which had a lot more action. Overall an exciting read and if this was the end, then I would say thanks for the ride.
⭐It was a good ending to the series (or seemed like the ending?) I was not blown away by it to start off with, the storyline seemed very vague to me and it looked as though the author lost track of the nucleus of the whole series, but the last part was riveting and I was glued to the book then. In general I very much enjoyed Kelly McCullough’s writing and a very good fantasy series to read. Highly recommended.
⭐A well done story about an assassin who has lost everything, and the struggle he goes through to rebuild his life from the ground up. The protagonists are well drawn, the setting is well done, and the magic system makes the characters work, rather than answering every need. I liked that we got far enough into Aral’s head to feel his struggles, but at times it bogged the story down. I think he had a believable and interesting set of problems, although he seemed whiny at times. I didn’t like the way he has a new woman in every book.
⭐Major characters from previous books vanish without a trace (while new characters who replace them are underdeveloped), long-teased conspiracies are never resolved, and the conclusion is a disappointing mindless zombie boss fight instead of the long anticipated clash of philosophies and deities. The trend of repetitive and overlong passages of angsty navel-gazing continues, but is not balanced by satisfying external dialogue and varied action this time. Retroactively weakens the earlier books.
⭐More like 4 .5 stars. I love the whole fallen Blade series. This one didn’t disappoint. I only had one issue with this installment. I wish the author hadn’t dwell so much on the hero’s guilt trip. A little goes a long way. A lot of it just gets tedious and I couldn’t wait for the story to move forward. Overall, I enjoyed it.
⭐Best series I have read in a long time. Hopefully more to come from this author!6 books just isn’t enough!
