Description

“It frightens me, knowing the One has called up two such strong individuals. It means that there are troubled times in our future, and you must prepare yourselves.”The Temple at Illian is the crown jewel of life in the Northern Territory. There, pledges are paired with feli, the giant sacred cats of the One god, and are instructed to serve the One’s four capricious deities. Yet Sulis, a young woman from the Southern Desert, has a different perspective – one that just might be considered heresy…Sulis’s twin Kadar, meanwhile, is part of a different revolution. When Kadar falls in love with a woman from a Forsaken caste, he finds he’s willing to risk anything to get her people to freedom. But with Sulis drawing a dangerous level of attention from the deities, and war about to break out on two fronts, change may not come as easily as either twin had hoped. An astonishing debut, Kelley Grant brings to life a powerful new epic fantasy tale of determination and self-discovery.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A rich, exotic, culture forms the backdrop for this expertly concocted mixture of murder, romance, and intrigue. When Sulis, the daughter of a merchant, accepts her calling to dedicate her life to the Temple, she leaves behind her twin and confidante, Kadar. They are not so much separated by distance but by the cultural restrictions that surround Temple pledges. But before long, Sulis finds herself deeply involved in the machinations of Temple politics unsure who she can trust except for the feli who has bonded with her, the great cat, Djinn.Sulis knows that the Temple offers both good and evil, truth and lies, and adulation and death because her mother died there but she is overwhelmed by the forces she finds at work. Can she and Djinn sort out the truth before, she, too, loses her life? The plot’s twists and turns keep the story moving and the characters are well drawn and appealing. Anyone who has ever known the warmth and comfort of fur and the soft kneading of sheathed claws will love Djinn and the concept of the feli! This was an absorbing, fast paced story. I can’t wait for the sequel!

⭐Desert Rising has a fresh fantasy setting. Both familiar and strange, the author synthesizes a number of different cultures but it’s impossible to name just one place or time as her source and that lends mystery and exoticism to the narrative. Like any good allegory, today’s issues are on display but in a clever disguise — we get a heroine whose aspirations are challenged by her sex and her desert origins as well as her mother’s mysterious yet similar past. The most appealing part for me is the creation of a new religion in which acolytes are paired with a feli, a giant cat, who chooses his or her partner and is a link to the The One who is male or female, depending on who describes her/him/it. Beneath the One are four other gods who are as quarrelsome as the Greek deities of the Iliad. The usual struggles of humankind are here in our endless need to subject and misread “the other” as well as the destructive desire to maintain our own status, even at the expense of others. Romance is a part of the complex fabric of this tale, even more so for the heroine’s twin brother, Kadar. And as for fabrics, much lush attention is paid to clothing, cloth, sewing and ritual wear. I need my fantasies to offer some visuals, and this ones does.I’ll have to get to the sequels, but I’m betting author might do a spin-off which concentrates just on the feli. Cat fanciers will certainly cozy up to and purr over this epic fantasy.

⭐This is a good read with likeable, well drawn characters. It’s pretty typical with the bad guy trying to take over the girl’s mind and hold her as a sex object, but still–I liked the way she got away from him with the aid of her feline partner and her mentor. The world building is interesting and plausible. I would like to have seen more from the great cat, but perhaps in the next novel, which I will buy and read. I’m looking forward to learn how the One and the dieties tangle.

⭐When I started reading this, I thought this could something fun and original seeing how the setting appeared to be desert oriented opposed to the traditional high fantasy setting. But sadly this book falls to every cliche fantasy story trope imaginable which makes it so dull and predictable that it was hard to finish. If you never read a fantasy before I guess it would be okay, but for people who read a lot this is not good at all.

⭐Really enjoyed this book. I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. Wow – once I picked it up, I had difficulty putting it down. I loved the world that Grant created – complex, coherent, believable, exotic and yet slightly familiar. I really appreciate strong female characters, and this book has a number (as well as great male characters). Also embodiment the storytelling. I felt like I had the info to get oriented to this different world without feeling like “oh – it’s time for the exposition”. I just bought the next two books – looking forward to finding out what’s next.

⭐Desert Rising is a solid start to what promises to be a rousing epic fantasy series. With bickering gods, giant sentient feline companions, and cultures on the brink of war, the worldbuilding is as deep as they come. The main characters are fully fleshed out and interesting in their own unique ways, and the writing is top notch. Like many books that are the beginning of a planned series, I felt the plot spent a little too much time setting up the conflict to come, yet there was still enough tension to keep me engaged. Overall, it was very satisfying and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

⭐I raced through this book so thankful to know that there was more! This book has amazing world building that seems completely natural.Deities who are present. It is a very rich read from start to finish that leaves you wanting more.Thankfully – there IS more!

⭐You would not know this was Ms. Grant’s first foray into the fantasy genre if you had not been told. The story is well woven and powerful. Her characters are very human and yet otherworldly in their interactions making this a page turner. Be prepared to forget the passing of time and lose yourself in the intensity of upheaval on many levels. Be ready to love the characters as they struggle to make headway against the way things have always been done. You will want the sequel.

⭐Over flowing with great ideas. Really intrigued to see how this all pans out!
