Description
The hero is a Dreamer, a one-in-a-million talent who lays down psi-discs for the Cerebral Broadcasting Corporation. Dreamers are employed on billion-dollar contracts to produce psi-discs, the entertainment of the future. But when Dreamers start to die, our hero has to go into their alternative realities on the track of the killer.
Be warned – there is a fair amount of sexual violence in the book, which is necessary for the plot but which is not for the faint-hearted! If you have any reservations at all, please download the sample first.
Dreamer’s Cat is a fast-paced 67,000 words, about 260 pages. It has been a science fiction bestseller ever since it was released for the Kindle and it will only ever be published as an eBook.
FIVE STAR REVIEW from Vine Voice and Top 500 Reviewer Shaun Horrigan of London – “This book is a novella rather than a full length novel but in this case the shorter format just makes the story that much tighter and that much more intense. There is no room for “filler”, no paragraphs of flowery prose, there is just a bare, raw and very intense story. This really is a page turner that I found very hard to put down! I was still reading it at 2am this morning.
“If you do not generally read sci-fi, don’t be put off from getting this book. The story is more non-genre than real hard core sci-fi with mix of crime and psychological thriller thrown in for good measure. It actually reminds me of a harder hitting version of some of Iain Banks non-genre work, and for me that was certainly not a bad thing. The stealer of the show is in my mind the dreamer’s cat herself. She really is a beautifully envisioned creation.
“I must point out that the warning in writer’s description is very true. This is an extremely hard hitting and graphic book and definitely not for the faint-hearted or squeamish.
“I must also say that the formatting and presentation on the Kindle is pretty much perfect. I didn’t see any problems at all! Overall this has to get five stars from me and I will definitely be reading more of Stephen Leather’s work. In fact I am going to download The Basement as soon as I finish this review!”

⭐ I was taken completely off guard at the way this story pulled me in and kept me guessing up to the last page. There really is a thin line between genius and insanity! I loved the book, although some of the psi disk content was unsettling. Psi discs have replaced sight and sound movies and television as an entertainment activity by adding the remaining senses of touch, taste, and smell with emotional responses thrown in for spice. I’m definitely going to read more of this author. Our “dreamer”, Lief Ableman, is middle age and has only one more psi disc to make on his contract before a most lucrative retirement. Then, “dreamers” start dying. The corporation asks him to find out why and we are off on a most interesting mind trip. The book title refers to Lief’s bobcat, Ruth. Ruth is his trusted companion formed from his subconscious. I recommend it highly.Another of Leather’s books I’ve read and recommend is “Once Bitten”
⭐ The premise of our future in entertainment was good, but that’s as far as I liked it. It was violent. Disturbing. This type of story is not what I find entertaining. It has graphic child rape scenes, torture, and snuff scenes. I categorize this into the “once you see it, you can’t unsee it” file. I found the ending predictable, anti-climatic, rushed. It also has quite a few typos and grammatical errors. I only mention those because that sort of sloppy editing can bother some folks. If you’re into torture and violence then you’ll probably love it. I’m not, so I didn’t.
⭐ This is a science fiction book, which I don’t usually like to read, BUT it was pretty good! By profession, “Leif”, the protagonist is a “Dreamer”, sort of an author with a twist. He has an alter ego in the form of a non-existent cat, which stays with him and talks with him. Leif is close to finishing his contract with the Corporation, by creating a final “psi-disc”. The discs, allow the person using it to enter a virtual reality world, based on what the Dreamer has created. There are many Dreamers who work for the Corporation, but most die before they can retire. It’s a tough business. Now the Corporation has brought Leif back to the office to help find out what or who is killing the other Dreamers. My write-up does no justice to the book, which shows why I am not an author. Just a reader who enjoyed this author’s work.
⭐ Although I enjoyed the book. There were some instances (not on the main story theme) which implied violent sexual acts which were about to occur. Although the plot line veered away before the acts were completed they still left a lingering feeling that these depictions would not be proper for me to recommend as reading for my adult son or daughter.I did enjoy the method that the author used to jump from subplot two subplot and weave them together into one continuous narrative.I really enjoyed the sudden surprise ending.I do enjoy this author. It is the fifth book by him that I have read. All have been short and quick.
⭐ As a teenager I loved Andre Norton’s beast master book and other fantasy books she wrote with humans communicating telepathically with their animal friends to conquer the bad guys. The interaction between the cat and human is great. I loved the bar scene and the protectiveness of the cat for her owner. I see the same protectiveness displayed by the little felines I own or should I say own me. Even had them chase a dog down the street one day, possessive little beasts that they are. Great mystery science fiction plot with an interesting twisted ending, keeps you reading to the last page. Would make a good SciFy movie.
⭐ Like the reviewer above me, I also stumbled across this author’s post to other authors about how he had put his books on sale for holidays and was interested enough to check out the books in question (Note to other ebook authors… :))The reviewer above me certainty didnt mean the title of their review as a backhanded insult, but just to be clear, this book was worth much more than it’s $1 price. It’s an interesting phenomenon he’s created in the dreamers, the ability to imagine something so vividly that it can be recorded into a movie where the viewer gets a virtual reality version of the dreamer’s story. I loved that fact that he didnt saturate the book with invented/improved technology just to show how ‘future’ it was, and Leif, the dreamer in question, wasnt anything you’d expect from a mystery/thriller, but fit the whole plot and situation seamlessly. As another reviewer said, it moves but it doesnt feel rushed. Leif doesnt suddenly discover latent martial arts skills and start jumping out of buildings, it’s a … I dont want to call it a ‘thinking man’s action book’ but that’s the best term that’s coming to mind right now. My teeny teeny bone of contention is that when you figure out whodunit (and I doubt you’ll see it coming!), he doesnt explain howdunit. Im not sure if it’s because he didnt want to bog down the ending in a sudden flood of technical jargon or if it was sort of left up to the reader to imagine. I tend to lean towards the later; it didnt *need* to be explained, and in fact it would have probably hurt the story/pulled you out of the moment to suddenly be reading about the technical hows instead of the emotional whys. It’s rare for me to say that, usually if I dont get things spelled out for me in great detail, I get annoyed. No loose ends! But this one works just as it is.On a side note, if you view the author’s other ebooks, you’ll see that each one is completely different, and I love that. I love an author who’s not only stretching his wings, he’s doing something completely unlike what he did before. No pigeonholing for this author 🙂 Ive bought the other 2 stories and cant wait to read them.
⭐ I can’t say enough about how much I loved this book. It’s scifi, it’s mystery and it’s totally engrossing. The plot allows for a bunch of different story experiences, all tied nicely together in an unpredictable way. I was left guessing the entire time about how it would end and must admit that I wasn’t crazy about the ending…left me a bit unsatisfied, but aside from that, the journey was great. A very nice escape and yet another reason why Stephen Leather is beginning to be my go to author when I want something really good to read.
⭐ Great ideas (kind of a 21st century version of Brainstorm) well written but unsatisfactory ending. Characters well developed, including the cat. Ending was a disappointment. Also, some cause and effect gaps, involving the cat and some unexplained connection to the other dreamers.Maybe I just missed a subtlety in the ending, but this was my least favorite Stephen Leather novel so far (especially compared to Nightingale series)
⭐ dreamer’s cat is a story about perceptions. Well constructed in a near future diaspora, this sof scifi neither stalls nor bores the reader. Nitpicking; I found a handful of misspellings at most. Certainly not enough to break the novel. Just nitpicking. The world is fleshed out enough to underline the mood but not distract from the story. At 8k words the author balances scenes, dialog, and story without it feeling clipped either. A definite recommendation and I look forward to more from this author.Edit additional:I clearly was taking the sample size and ignoring that the novel is more than 8k words. I apologize for that. I had read the whole thing when writing the review. Also, corrected a spelling error on my part.I would like to add that I’m glad to see the author raised the price to $2.99 and that you won’t be sorry for purchasing this book at this price. The author certainly deserves it.
⭐ I stumbled across this book while browsing the other day. I’m so glad I decided to give it a try!Thoroughly enjoyed the writing and new plot concept. It was long enough to enjoy and feel I’d really read a book but short enough I was disappointed that it ended.Good Job, Mr. Leather.. am looking forward to reading “Bangkok Bob and The Missing Mormon”!
