⭐ Typical Stephen Leather – interesting plot, lots of violence and IRA involvement, flawed good guys.

⭐ I had read a couple of short stories by this author and this Mike Cramer trio has cemented my love of his mystery writing. He keeps you in suspense to the end. I highly recommend his books to avid mystery readers.

⭐ It is difficult to overstate the quality of these books. All three are great reads and move at a cracking pace. The over-contrived opening of the third novel is the only real stumble in a triumphant trilogy. The first of the three, “The Chinaman” stands out as the best by far among three great novels. It is packed with nuanced and conflicted characters. All of the main protagonists, and several of the more minor characters, have aspects which attract sympathy and others which attract condemnation. Each is struggling with inner conflicts and most throw up moral conundrums that engage the reader. None of them is right or wrong in everything that they do. All exhibit that very human ability to justify everything that they do by closing their minds to moral imperatives which they then pray in aid on other occasions. The principle themes – the inner resourcefulness of people under intense pressure, the strength of the human spirit, and the difficulties faced by people catapulted out of their comfort zones – are all the stuff of Gerald Seymour’s novels. But Seymour’s plots nowadays grind inexorably, almost interminably towards a single climax. There are few events or action elements along the way.”The Chinaman” is equal to, if not better than, Seymour at his best in his early work. Packed with event and action, the plot rattles along but remains character driven throughout.I haven’t read all of Leather’s work (yet!) but “The Chinaman” must be one of his best. The title character of the series, Cramer, only appears very late in that book. The other two are centred on him. As others have noted, the second and third books drift away from the qualities that make the first so great. But they do explore Cramer and his own inner contradictions. I suspect that they would attract less criticism if they had been published without the first book. Against that, they do suffer. Each is, however, a thoroughly good and entertaining thriller in its own right.

⭐ The chinaman was slow paced and not really credible and Cramer only made a quick appearance at the end. Not worth the wait to get to him to learn nothing about him. The long shot was fantastic by comparison and more satisfying in its storyline – more a romp than a sophisticated engagement with the readers imagination. The double tap was another that shows it was an early work and the end was too rushed and a let down. I don’t like the sex scenes which are superfluous to the plots and his Dan spider books don’t have sex scenes to titilate the reader. I don’t think I really enjoyed these as much as his stand alone adventures or the Dan Spider collection and would not recommend them to someone I wanted to read stephen leather books. They wouldn’t come back for more.

⭐ I enjoyed reading The Long Shot as a paperback (bought secondhand) over a year ago which put me on to some of Stephen Leather’s other excellent characters. Then I saw this Kindle offer and reread it, eventually, as part of this “trilogy”; it slotted in well. The stories are compelling and the Double Tap has surprises all the way. Originally I thought the stories were out of order this was because I could not jump the Long Shot so in the end had an enjoyable refresh of the plot; sorry for earlier review note. Unless I missed a key element the end of The Long Shot and the beginning of The Double Tap leave the relationship beween Sgt Cramer and the Colonel an enigma – that’s my excuse. Maybe for Kindle users it would be handy to be able to move between books (Go To) in this type of trilogy etc. concept; e.g. if you had the physical books you are browse as a reminder.

⭐ These three novels make an excellent read. They are well structured with some well thought out twists and turns plus an exciting finish

⭐ It has been an age since I had read these individually and I’m glad I read them again. Just couldn’t put my finger on details until the recent read and I’m not disappointed. Brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable. Only criticism is they could be listed as separate books on the kindle menu rather than start with The Chinaman and finish at the end of Double Tap, hence 4 stars. Overall I’m pleased I got them, now to move onto the remainder.

⭐ You would think he’d dry up but no, three books in one here. Once again very hard to put down once you start. I loved The Chinaman, I think he’d get any ones sympathy vote. The long shot was a very good read for me as I have been to most of the locations in the States and that made it even more interesting. Mike Cramer is the man I’d like to be in his situation, ‘nuf said. Well done Stephen, you keep writing and I’ll keep buying, what a partnership, eh.

⭐ Great stuff. Stephen Leather never disappoints and these novels are examples of him at the top of his game. Can’t wait to see the Jackie Chan film coming out soon based on the Chinaman.

⭐ The first book was great. The second book much less so, the third book I just gave up and never even finished. Very unusual when a author gets worse, each book he writes. To bring some balance. I have read many of this author’s books and some are outstanding. Sadly some are utter tosh. Leather is marmite. When you buy one you never know if you are getting the really good Leather, or the other guy. Can be an expensive experiment.
