Description
From the #1 New York Times bestselling authors of The Talisman, “an intelligent…suspenseful page-turner” (The Wall Street Journal) from “two master craftsmen, each at the top of his game” (The Washington Post).Twenty years ago, a boy named Jack Sawyer traveled to a parallel universe called the Territories to save his mother and her Territories “Twinner” from an agonizing death that would have brought cataclysm to the other world. Now Jack is a retired Los Angeles homicide detective living in the nearly nonexistent hamlet of Tamarack, Wisconsin. He has no recollection of his adventures in the Territories, and was compelled to leave the police force when an odd, happenstance event threatened to awaken those memories. When a series of gruesome murders occur in western Wisconsin that are reminiscent of those committed several decades ago by a madman named Albert Fish, the killer is dubbed “the Fishman,” and Jack’s buddy, the local chief of police, begs Jack to help the inexperienced force find him. But are these new killings merely the work of a disturbed individual, or has a mysterious and malignant force been unleashed in this quiet town? What causes Jack’s inexplicable waking dreams—if that is what they are—of robins’ eggs and red feathers? It’s almost as if someone is trying to tell him something. As this cryptic message becomes increasingly impossible to ignore, Jack is drawn back to the Territories and to his own hidden past, where he may find the soul-strength to enter a terrifying house at the end of a deserted tract of forest, there to encounter the obscene and ferocious evils sheltered within it.

⭐I re-read the first book in this trilogy THE TALISMAN right before ‘re-reading this book. I was amazed just how much I didn’t remember about either book. I first read this book when it first came out in 2001, years after THE TALISMAN. I did read that authors King and Straub might be working on book three, the last in the trilogy. I hope that’s true.I didn’t like BLACK HOUSE quite as much as THE TALISMAN. I rate it 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars. It started out, for the first few chapters and then scattered throughout, with an omniscient narrator telling the story. It definitely wasn’t my favorite way to find out what’s happening in the story. This installment takes place twenty years after the events in book one. Jack Sawyer is now grown. He’s a retired homicide detective who now lives in the small town of French Landing, Wisconsin. He already helped the local police chief solve a difficult case and now there is a serial predator of children on the loose in the area and the police chief asks for his help again.Jack has blocked the events that happened to him at 12 years old out of his memory. Slowly as events escalate in this story his memories of the past return. And he finds he’s chasing after more than a child predator of this world.I loved the mixed cast of characters in this story (the good guys, that is). I loved the character of Henry especially. The bad guys were very bad. I also liked the tie-in to The Dark Tower. If you haven’t read these two books, which are a mix of horror and fantasy, do yourselves a favor and block out some time to remedy this. If you’re like me and haven’t read these books for a few years, read them again and realize how much you missed the first time around.I really hope book three of this trilogy appears sooner rather than later.
⭐This may have been the third time I’ve read the Talisman set by Stephen King and Peter Straub.. What an excellent configuration. They meld together perfectly and deliver a story line that is enjoyable and spellbinding no matter how many times I read it. I could go on and on about the exceptional character development, the imagery and the way the book has an atmospheric all its own. But, to be completely honest and ‘transparent’ as they say these days,… I read books of this genre solely to be entertained. If the book transforms from words to pictures in my mind’s eye, if I can imagine the characters so well that I literally care about them, and be both satisfied with the end, yet disappointed that it ended, then I am a very happy camper! Thank you Stephen King, Peter Straub and Amazon! well done!
⭐Black House is the second of two novels by Stephen King & Peter Straub. As far as I know, there are no others in this series. I was afraid it would either be too scary or somehow boring – I seem to have read a lot of Stephen King books over the years and thought I might be getting to the point where they all started to be somewhat the same. But even though there were some unpleasant aspects to it, it was a very interesting story. For understanding this book, I’m sure it helps if you have read the first book, The Talisman, but if you haven’t, it won’t keep you from enjoying this one. The book refers back to the earlier one several times, but the story stands well on its own. It also references places and events from Stephen King’s Dark Tower series and having read those also helps to understand this one. But again, it is not necessary. The story begins with an overview of the little town of French Landing, Wisconsin. One of the things we find out during our tour of the town is that it has been plagued by a string of murders of children. The police are already working on the first two cases, and there is a third they are not yet sure of. And the murderer is planning the abduction of a fourth child.Jack Sawyer, the hero of The Talisman, has retired from the LAPD and come to live in French Landing. He is good friends with Dale Gilbertson, the police chief and with Gilbertson’s uncle Henry, a blind man who has several DJ personalities for various radio stations in the area. With these helpers and some others, including a motorcycle gang, one of whose members is the father of the first of the murder victims, Jack must find the murderer and rescue the last little boy to disappear. This journey involves a mysterious Black House that belongs to the murderer and a trip to the mysterious lands that Jack thinks of as The Territories – places that will be familiar to those who have read the Dark Tower series.
⭐It is a Stephen King book written with another author and it as always, was great! I recommend reading The Tailisman first as it is the first one before this. Both great reads! Love them both and have read several times.
⭐Well inspiring might not be the right word but “Black House” is an old fashioned story of a quest and good against evil. Good does prevail in the end but only after many losses are endured and wounds inflicted. The characters are wonderful – bigger than life as they say. There is a lot to like about “Black House” and I recommend it with one caveat. Anyone with a low tolerance for blood and gore should probably read the Lord of the Rings trilogy instead.
⭐I loved following the further adventures of Jack Sawyer after reading The Talisman. This book is another engrossing joy ride from the master storyteller, Stephen King. You will love the multi-characters of Henry Leyden and won’t be able to put this book down. With its many ties to the Tower and gunslinger series, this book is full of surprising twists and turns. I was sorry that it ended and can’t wait for the third book of the adventures of Jack Sawyer. As I read on King’s website that another book with Straub is in the works!
⭐Oh dear I love Stephen king but this book with Peter Straus took me a real effort to finish good story and great characters but the description of things going on was unnecessary too long and boring I stuck it out till the end but this was the first book I ever seriously thought of giving up on
⭐Straight from reading The Talisman, the next recommended book was Black House. Excitedly, I bought the book and expected great things from it. Although the book was everything I expected, I found it hard to get into. The start of the book was so filled with unnecessary description that I actually found myself skipping paragraphs looking for the story to start. Once it did, I couldn’t put it down. I especially liked the final twist which no-one could possibly have seen coming. All in all, an excellent read.
⭐Black House is the follow up to King and Straub’s Talisman , which I somehow found didn’t deliverer ! I found Black House the follow up a further dissapontment.Twenty years on Jack takes early retirement as a senior quality police officer and settles in a small town to unravel the identity of a gruesome demon serial killer nicknamed the fisherman. Blackhouse like the Talisman carries the overdescriptive eerie atmosphere of Straub, also written in the third person confusing , to many uneccesary characters , and sub plots , and to lengthy. There was a colapse in the foundation of the novel which could have been a runaway succes , as we return to the fantasy land of the Territories, which still failed to leave a mark on me in a jumbled story of paranormal, horror, fantasy and detective /crime. Black house lost it’s direction but I struggled and stuck with it. It’s worth a read if you are a fan of either King or Straub to make your mind up !
⭐Great old Stephen King went a bit too gory for my taste here…but I suppose the story has demanded this. The villain was not entirely a creature of our world, so his crimes should have been too much too, shouldn’t they?Difficult to say who contributed what to the novel, where is King and where is Straub, but the whole thing works very well. I enjoyed even the end, which is not exactly your typical Hollywood forever after. Many good and interesting characters, even if they are mentioned in passing. This always makes space bigger and the imaginary world more realistic and multidimensional, and people in this world are not all black and white, some of them are shades of grey. Just like in the real life. Great read for a Stephen King’s fan.
⭐Black House brings back Jack Sawyer from The Talisman.Jack is now an adult and a detective in L.A. However things,as they do,conspire to bring Jack to pastures new where he is re-connected with The Territories and the continuing story of that land. The Talisman and Black House connect to The Dark Tower series and its nice for readers to catch up with what’s been happening. The Black House introduces us to The Crimson Kings’ latest lackey in the form of Mr Munchen. My description will not do Stephen King service so I wont try but I will say, read this book! And it you haven’t read The Talisman, read it first!Excellent read.
