Description

The writing team that delivered the bestselling Faithful, about the 2004 Red Sox championship season, takes readers to the ballpark again, and to a world beyond, in an eBook original to be published on August 21, 2012.Dean Evers, an elderly widower, sits in front of the television with nothing better to do than waste his leftover evenings watching baseball. It’s Rays/Mariners, and David Price is breezing through the line-up. Suddenly, in a seat a few rows up beyond the batter, Evers sees the face of someone from decades past, someone who shouldn’t be at the ballgame, shouldn’t be on the planet. And so begins a parade of people from Evers’s past, all of them occupying that seat behind home plate. Until one day Dean Evers sees someone even eerier….

⭐Remember, this is a novella. It’s going to be short, but hopefully, to the point. The main character, Mr. Evers, leaves New England for Florida as he becomes older. He’s a widower and a baseball fan. He misses his dead wife a great deal. Instead of watching the Boston games, he now has Florida’s Devil Rays. He watches the Rays frequently on TV by himself. The short story gives Mr. Evers, and the reader, a great deal of his lifetime over a period of a few days. Mostly, it all takes place while he has dinner and watches the ball game.People he knew from his childhood, as a young adult, even his wife, show up. They show up always in the same seat at the ballpark behind home plate. They stare at him and attempt to converse while he dines. Of course, they’re all ghosts. His wife goes one step further and phones him. It appears she’s more aware of some of his indiscretions than he was aware. The climax is quite surprising as he physically goes to the game one evening and has the opportunity to occupy that very seat.Mr. King has the ability to not only relate, but to pull the reader into the story. This is a novella and he accomplishes that very task in a short amount of time. As far as short stories go, I found this one of the better ones. I liked it a lot.

⭐This delightful read is fascinating story about a man whose has lost his wife and a number of friends to the grim reaper and it details the effects it has on him. It’s interesting in the way this man deals with the loss. Great story told by the best of authors (my opinion). Thank you again Mr. King.

⭐I am a Stephen King fan…but have gotten a bit tired of his blood and guts stories. This is a great story because it is spooky without seeming totally farfetched. I really enjoyed how we got to see different sides of this man’s character through the effect he has had on others. It’s kind of the dark side of “It’s A Wonderful Life”. When I got to the end I went back and re-read the entire story from the perspective I now had of the character. I am from “Red Sox Land” but don’t happen to be a big baseball fan. If you are, it is probably a “plus” in reading the story. If you aren’t (like me) it doesn’t matter…the story is still fun.

⭐Geez, Stephen King never ceases to amaze me. You can almost hear the crack of the bat and the smell of the peanuts through his writing. You hit it outta the paak, Uncle Stevie!

⭐“Look at me,” Evers said. “I’m on TV, therefore I exist.”― Stephen King, A Face in the CrowdThis was a creepy little read. I’d been wanting to check this one out for a long time but did not have an E reader. Luckily that has changed. So I was pulled in immediately. And this is the type of King that I love..eerie rather then gory or outright in your face scary.I kind of felt like I was watching an episode of the twilight zone. Remember that wonderful show? I loved it as a kid. Used to watch it all the time. And this was like going back in time.So the story, short as it was, was really interesting. And intense. I have no quibbles with it but I guess I really wish it had been even 10 or 20 pages longer. It is really kind of over in the blink of an eye. I wanted more “Twilight Zone” effect. But as short as it was it really leaves a mark. I will not be forgetting this anytime soon.I am not, nor will I ever be, a Baseball fan but I really do not think you have to be to get into this story.I LOVED the premise. And it is awesome that such a short book could be that thought provoking AND be so rich in atmosphere and have such wonderful characterizations. I mean..the whole thing is like only 30 pages! But it was a fun read.Recommended to those who like eerie little stories.

⭐Stephen King has the ability of use the written word to paint a mind scene that will pull you to a place where you can see and smell and feel. You don’t read his books so much as live in them. Stewart O’Nan is the master of the tight, understated Seinfeldian structure that can get you very interested in, well, almost nothing. Put these two together and magic happens.Ok, this is a novella; It’s short, succinct and to the point. It’s about a man who leaves New England and his beloved Red Sox and moves to Florida, the land of the Devil Rays. The actual story takes place in just a couple of days but embraces the entire lifetime of Dean Evers as he watches baseball on TV and is haunted by Faces in the Crowd, faces of those he has wounded or who have injured him.Young Dr. Young, his childhood dentist; Lennie Wheeler his business partner, Soupy Embree the kid he taunted in school, his departed wife who may have known more of his shenanigans than she let on. All of these faces stare at him from his television while he watches the ball game and eats his lonely meals. Do they offer some answers as to why he is now alone? That’s for the reader to find out in this minimalist morality play that takes place while watching a baseball game on TV. Only in America. I liked this story, I liked it a lot.

⭐I love 99% of anything related to Stephen King. Never read Stewart O’Nan prior to this, I definately will in the future. Even though you knew where it was going from the get go, your curiosty would not let you go. I am a big fan of the short stories, I feel less guilt if I don’t like it, I don’t feel obligated to finish reading the story. A Face In The Crowd was a one sitting read and a very good one!

⭐Good story, as usual. You can always count on Stephen King to take you somewhere you wouldn’t ever dream of

⭐A widower fancies that he can see faces from his past in televised baseball games. Perhaps for King completists, this is nevertheless a melancholy and effective stand-alone story that doesn’t require a knowledge/love of baseball for it to work; we’ve all got regrets, after all.

⭐Widower Dean Evers sits at home alone watching a baseball game on the TV. Suddenly, he inexplicably begins to see faces from his past within the stadium crowd. Faces of people he knows have died. this causes him to reminisce and, in some cases, regret how he treated those people when they were alive. An enjoyable short story with cleverly placed humour.

⭐Didn’t understand the baseball references butit was still a great short story. Reminded me a short SK wrote some time ago called ” bet they have a hell of a band” or something like that

⭐Always love tales from the master of the craft! Another belter from the genius of King; great story as always. Love his work.

⭐A nicely written short that allows us to take a look at how well King brings his characters to life. What seems effortless to him is the envy of many authors. Loved this story even though I have no clue about baseball
