    Description

This comprehensive student manual has been designed to accompany the leading textbook by Bernard Schutz, A First Course in General Relativity, and uses detailed solutions, cross-referenced to several introductory and more advanced textbooks, to enable self-learners, undergraduates and postgraduates to master general relativity through problem solving. The perfect accompaniment to Schutz’s textbook, this manual guides the reader step-by-step through over 200 exercises, with clear easy-to-follow derivations. It provides detailed solutions to almost half of Schutz’s exercises, and includes 125 brand new supplementary problems that address the subtle points of each chapter. It includes a comprehensive index and collects useful mathematical results, such as transformation matrices and Christoffel symbols for commonly studied spacetimes, in an appendix. Supported by an online table categorising exercises, a Maple worksheet and an instructors’ manual, this text provides an invaluable resource for all students and instructors using Schutz’s textbook.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐One cannot master GR without working many problems and fully understanding the solutions. This book is most welcome.

⭐I got the textbook (Schutz) for which this is a companion because reviews seemed to suggest that it was the easiest introduction to GR. It has problems at the end of each chapter, which is great, but they aren’t easy and there aren’t answers so you really have no way of knowing if you solved them correctly. This book (Scott) is extremely helpful in this regard, providing answers to SOME of the questions. At times both books fall short in their explanations, making what seem to me to be huge mathematical leaps. That said, they are, I have found, far superior in this regard to the competition. Most books at this level cut much more of the detail in the name of elegance.Scott unfortunately skips the solutions to what are apparently critical problems, later referencing these very derivations in solving other problems. But if you get Schutz and are serious about working through it, you will need this book (Scott). It is essential.

⭐This is an excellent book written by someone who has an international reputation in the topic of relativity, BUT do not be confused about what it is. It is essentially a series of questions (and thankfully in most cases answers) for students who have read Schutz’s textbook. So some basic knowledge of special and general relativity is probably essential. If you have that you can improve on your understanding. The comments on time dilation helped me, but if you are confused about gravitational red shift you may not get much relief.

⭐Book was as described in ad and arrived within estimated time.

    ⭐Nice deal

    ⭐Splendid! A+

    ⭐great

⭐Very clearly written. Dr. Scott has worked very hard to prepare an excellent resource for self learners of general relativity.

⭐Robert Scott’s “Manual for a First Course in General Relativity” (referring to the textbook by Bernard Schutz) is a collection of solutions to many – not all – of the exercises in that textbook. It also has some additional exercises of it’s own, and solutions in it. By providing these, it could indeed be called a manual. However, it does not contain any additional explanations, alternative approaches etc.The fact that not all of Schutz’s problems are solved is worth one star less. The complete lack of anything else than problems and solutions in a book that is called a manual, is worth another half star less, resulting in 3.5 / 5.If you like working with the “First Course” by Schutz, Scott’s “Manual” will probably be a good extension. Do not expect this manual to facilitate GR (as presented by Schutz) for you, which is tough, and there’s hardly a way around it.

Contains the most important solutions to the exercises in the book. Together with the book, it gives a good introduction to general relativity as well as some practise so calculate standard exercises as well as advanced problems.
