Description
Ezra Pound’s classic book about the meaning of literature, with a new introduction by Michael Dirda. This important work, first published in 1934, is a concise statement of Pound’s aesthetic theory. It is a primer for the reader who wants to maintain an active, critical mind and become increasingly sensitive to the beauty and inspiration of the world’s best literature. With characteristic vigor and iconoclasm, Pound illustrates his precepts with exhibits meticulously chosen from the classics, and the concluding “Treatise on Meter” provides an illuminating essay for anyone aspiring to read and write poetry. ABC of Reading displays Pound’s great ability to open new avenues in literature for our time.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐The best thing I garnered from ABC of reading wasn’t how to read better, for that is too easy. Empower yourself with what self-criticism Pound must have suffered. It was to determine worth of product, meaning to distinguish horrible writing from provocative and interesting writing, and to know which novel or poem of two authors is an exemplar of master writing. In an age of post-information, any man may walk the street and say they know this or that, and we would easily believe it because of how similar it sounds to something else another genius said. In order to perceive that, there is much work needs be done. This is a necessity in today’s industrial printing because so much of what is written is meant to line one’s pocket, to prop each career of peers, to afford that dream job and never to write with sincerity and earnest and love. If you want to know how better to read and write, you might ask a writer, and no better one than Pound to start.
⭐The book gives an authoritative and convincing take on poetry and literature. Its main application as far as I’m concerned is to give the reader enough knowledge to go forward in his own studies without too much fear. I’m pleased with it.
⭐ABC of reading is a book which is applicable to the business since we have been reading the world and the society as a book which is to be read since Plato and before Plato wrote this in his ancient time or before his ancient time.

⭐This highly unusual book elicits equally peculiar reviews by some who take it too seriously, by some who think it’s actually a book about “how to read,” and by some who find it impenetrable. It’s actually all of these at once. The book reads like the chaotic person that Pound was, but it also shows why he was such a brilliant critic and the central influence on most modern English-language poets. Pound argues at length, for instance, that almost everything that is found in English poetry is already present in Chaucer (in Middle English, of course). At other times Pound is just cranky and obstinate. He tells us that Milton was “stupid”; Whitman is awful; so are Byron and Poe (“find me a poem by Byron or Poe that doesn’t have seven defects”; and Walter Savage Landor may be one of the most overlooked writers in English. Oh, and if English is your only language, “start with Fielding.” What saves these erratic pronouncements is Pound’s almost unmatched passion for poetry and his knowledge of all things technical. He presents an array of Middle English poems for consideration (rare at the time), and includes his usual admiration for Chinese ideographs, French troubadour poems, and so much more. This a book for all serious students of literature at all levels. But take it as an historical example of a brilliant but erratic poet’s thoughts.
⭐Whilst, obviously Mr Pound’s take on how one should read, I found the book educational. However, I read it twice, and am glad I persisted. Once may well be enough for cleverer people.
⭐More penetrable than Pound’s Guide to Kulchur, but still very, very dense. He has decided he is speaking to a very particular audience and if you don’t get his references (or aren’t willing to put the work into figuring it out) you are not it. The work has a zen feel to it – there are a lot of levels and he’s laid hidden jokes where the reader making the connexion is the key piece he’s trying to impart. I found Pound’s syntax difficult at first, but there is a rhythm to it and once you figure it out, his writing flows very well. There is a lot of guidance as to what a serious reader should be familiar with in his opinion and why.
⭐è un libbro di facile lettura, ma molto profondo. In certi passaggi mi parla dal cuore. Da raccomandare a chiunque voglia affrontare la vita ragionando.Read this before you turn 30 if you can.
