Description

“As panoramic as it is learned, this is ancient history for our globalized world.” — Tom Holland, author of Dynasty and Rubicon Twenty-five-hundred years ago, civilizations around the world entered a revolutionary new era that overturned old order and laid the foundation for our world today. In the face of massive social changes across three continents, radical new forms of government emerged; mighty wars were fought over trade, religion, and ideology; and new faiths were ruthlessly employed to unify vast empires. The histories of Rome and China, Greece and India-the stories of Constantine and Confucius, Qin Shi Huangdi and Hannibal-are here revealed to be interconnected incidents in the midst of a greater drama. In Ancient Worlds, historian Michael Scott presents a gripping narrative of this unique age in human civilization, showing how diverse societies responded to similar pressures and how they influenced one another: through conquest and conversion, through trade in people, goods, and ideas. An ambitious reinvention of our grandest histories, Ancient Worlds reveals new truths about our common human heritage.”A bold and imaginative page-turner that challenges ideas about the world of antiquity.”Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads

⭐This is a very good, yet particular, global history of the ancient world, from Greece & Rome east through India & China. I would not recommend it as a first introduction to ancient history, as its thematic organization, as opposed to a straight chronological narrative, can be difficult to follow. That said, the book impressively accomplishes its goal of exploring the interconnectedness of the ancient world through three themes. The first section, ‘man’s relationship to man’ looks chiefly at the evolution of politics during the Axial Age of the 6th century BCE. Here we see the establishment of governments & states including Athenian democracy, Roman republicanism & Chinese Confucianism. The emphasis here is on struggle, conflict & compromise as these political systems develop. The second section, looks at the relationships among ancient communities in the 3rd-2nd centuries BCE. War features prominently, from Rome v Carthage to China’s imperial & dynastic conflicts. Scott also writes here on the Silk Road, with its economic & cultural exchanges & connections running across the whole of the ancient world. The third section is about man and the divine, or the development of religion in the 4th century, particularly religion’s spread and its relationship to the state. Christianity in the Roman world & Central Asia, Hinduism in India and Buddhism in China all underwent major redefinitions in the 4th century. Much of these religious developments involved politics, and the interconnectedness of the ancient world, the book’s major theme. This is a great book examining particular themes in the ancient world.

⭐I saw this at the bookstore and bought it (on my Kindle – Sorry Barnes and Noble!) because I was interested in learning more about the history of India and China, and came away a little disappointed. I imagine any “history of global antiquity” written in English by a Westerner would probably focus mostly on Greece and Rome, about which so much has already been written (in English, by Westerners), so I can’t be too critical. As a work of popular history, though, it’s very good, and it was genuinely surprising to learn how ancient civilizations often thought of as distinct from one another were more connected than is generally understood.

⭐I oreder the wrong book but good quality

⭐Very good book.
