Description

Your complete introduction to ShakespeareWilliam Shakespeare has been hailed as one of the greatest thinkers of all time, one of the world’s finest artists, poets and dramatists. Shakespeare: A Complete Introduction introduces and explains the plays by looking at how they work, taking you on a journey through the genres of comedy, history and tragedy. The best known and most popular plays are discussed in detail and even plays in which Shakespeare may have had only the briefest creative and collaborative interest as a writer, get at least a mention. With material on his poetry and discussions on aspects of his life too, this truly is a complete introduction to Shakespeare.’A very lively and enthusiastic introduction to the full range of Shakespeare’s plays’ John Drakakis, Professor of English, University of Stirling’A masterpiece of the genre, written as it is with passion, without condescension, without jargon, thoughtful and open to changing critical theories, but always returning to the plays themselves, plays that fully reveal themselves most in performance.’ Martin Wine, Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)

⭐great info about the Bard

⭐Reviewed book offeres valid introduction to Shakespeare’s work. To my mind, it is ideal for newcomers, students at college or at some courses at universities. It offers historical contexts, plots, characters, highlightes key ideas of plays, structures of plays, quotations from others authors, time, other literatures, and so on. Sure, it is “only” introduction, so that explanations are limited. Author supposed that this book should be first book for people who start study/read/try to understand Shakespeare, and I also suppose that this book is fully suitable for this intention. I have only one advice – dear reader, you should not forget two things: (i) you must not read only about Shakespeare’s plays, but you have to read Shakespeare’s plays; and (ii) after reading this book, if you want to have deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s works, you should read other books.

⭐This is a fantastic introduction to Shakespeare’s plays. Professor Michael Scott provides detailed backgrounds of each of the plays, highlighting key ideas and casting spotlights on important historical facts and moments in the plays. I’ve used it as a teaching aid for my college freshman English course — my students find the context both interesting and helpful in learning and reading the plays. Thank you, Professor Scott!

⭐Very satisfactory as guide to individual plays and to overall Shakespearean patterns/groups
