Description

In 1898, Marie Curie first described a phenomenon she called “radioactivity.” A half-century later, two physicists would stand before dawn in the New Mexico desert, slathering themselves with sunscreen-and fearing that the imminent test detonation might ignite Earth’s atmosphere in a cataclysmic chain reaction and transform our planet into a burning star. This is the epic story of Curie’s quest to unlock the secrets of the material world; of the scientists-Rutherford, Bohr, Einstein, Oppenheimer-who built upon her work; of the day the first weapon of mass destruction dropped on Hiroshima, bringing both sudden terror and sudden peace, and of the new era of global uncertainty that emerged in its wake. With the clarity of great science writing, the vividness of historical narrative and the insight of biography, Before the Fallout is an unforgettable and sweeping account of the scientific discovery that changed the world.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I enjoyed this book very much. It is a more personal than usual history of the physics of the A-bomb, its construction, its delivery, and the politics of the entire process. In a number of places the author dispels some gossip concerning various discoveries and events that I have never found credible. This book presents a very readable, largely non-technical (but still insightful), history of the people, events, and places leading to the 1945 destruction of Hiroshima.

⭐Great history of physicists leading up to The Bomb.

⭐This reinforced earlier studies I’ve read.

⭐Yes, the advances in physics were tremendous. Stop for a moment – this book gives you the humanistic view of that ensuing the discoveries. Think of the advances of human thought developing the science. Marvelous! The dedication is phenomenal. This is a great historical presentation of a period of magical thought.

⭐This is a fascinating history of nuclear physics leading up to the development of the atomic bomb. Unfortunately the electronic version contains numerous typographical and formatting errors. Sadly this detracts from the readability of the downloaded version of this book.

⭐Per a 16 year old that chose it off a high school AP class book list, this is slow reading, but really interesting.

⭐This item adequately does the job that I bought it for. Would definitely buy this item again if I ever needed to.

⭐great and thoroughly reserarched book!

⭐Anyone who has done an A-level in physics will know of Einstein, the Curies, Rutherford and Heisenberg. But now for the first time I understand how these people interacted, the sequence in which their discoveries were made, and how they built on each others’ work. This book has gripped me to the extent that I have read it in just two or three sittings, which is unusual for me. The passage about the treatment of the Jewish physicists in Germany is moving. Strongly recommended to anyone with any interest in physics, or WW2.I’d ask for only three small changes in a future edition- more photographs: there are a good number, but more would be even better- events being allocated to months within a year, rather than dated in terms of years only- expression of measures in SI units, rather than yards and suchlike.
