    Description

Diana Preston curates a spectacular and harrowing collection of voices from the Lusitania tragedy. Eyewitness accounts capture the ship’s sinking in real-life detail as more than half the ship’s crew and passengers were drowned when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship on its 101st crossing of the Atlantic on May 7th, 1915.

⭐I have to say, I enjoyed the concept. I had seen it previously and thought it would work well in a Lusitania book. Unfortunately, the author to use it is Diana Preston. Here we are over a decade later, and the problems that permeate her previous book are amplified in this short read. Anyone would think that 12 years would be enough time for her to look at the failures in her previous book and do some actual research on the subject she is writing about, but such is not the case here. As with her previous book, it is stitched together from the same sources previous Lusitania authors have used. And, fact-checking, cross-checking are discarded. Why would an author use quotes from a discredited account like the (O) Sullivans who claimed the Lusitania had a pool, among other things? Why not look at the passenger list to see that Mrs. William McMillan Adams wasn’t aboard, but Mr.? Why not notice just look at a basic passenger list to see the proper spelling is Crichton, not Crighton. Steward Niemann is called Wiemann here due to a transcription error in Hoehling’s 1956 classic book. Again, a cursory glance at the crew list would have shown the correct spelling. The due dilligence needed to question what is being copied from another book should have been applied when the author quotes Lusitania victim Staff Captain Anderson. Another book invented the quote that he said the Lusitania’s “cells are the most comfortable on the Atlantic.” Had she ever looked at the deck plans in 12 years since her first book she’d realize there were no cells or a brig aboard the Lusitania. Secondly, the entire quote was invented by other authors.A major problem with just copying material from archives- what can an author tell us about the person they are writing about. Very little in this book. Is it too much to ask for a writer to know something about their subjects? This being the centenary, isn’t the whole point to write something that isn’t already in other books, articles? Maybe go beyond the easiest obtainable resources and contact families for private accounts, interviews in hometown newspapers, etc.Having read a few of the other new books coming out for the anniversary, it’s clear that they put effort and time into researching the subject where Ms. Preston can’t be bothered. Save your money for one of the better ones.

⭐I read “Dead Wake” before I read this book on the Lusitania. Actually, I think I think I listened to “Wake” on audio, but anyway, this book is a quick read that adds depth and first person voices to your knowledge of the Lusitania tragedy. Definitely worth a read for anyone interested in the Lusitania and the origins of WWI, which it also covers most succinctly.

⭐Superbly researched and constructed. A story of tragedy and political truth shaving. The very strong impression I got from reading this excellent account was that the loss of life was secondary to all else that went on between the warring factions. All parties had blood on their hands.

⭐As usual, trapped by Goodreads which will not let you go without leaving a review. I thoroughly dislike Goodreads!

⭐History has shown that the German in war is a very Barbaric individual without pity or without remorse who would do anything to win.
