Description

In the bestselling The Physics of Star Trek, the renowned theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss took readers on an entertaining and eye-opening tour of the Star Trek universe to see how it stacked up against the real universe. Now, responding to requests for more as well as to a number of recent exciting discoveries in physics and astronomy, Krauss takes a provocative look at how the laws of physics relate to notions from our popular culture — not only Star Trek, but other films, shows, and popular lore — from Independence Day to Star Wars to The X-Files.What’s the difference between a flying saucer and a flying pretzel? Why didn’t the aliens in Independence Day have to bother invading Earth to destroy it?What’s new with warp drives? What’s the most likely scenario for doomsday? Are ESP and telekinesis impossible? What do clairvoyance and time travel have in common? How might quantum mechanics ultimately affect the fate of life in the universe?

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is a follow-up to Lawrence Krauss’ The Physics of Star Trek, where he explored the physics of the Star Trek venture, and whether or not it was congruent with current physics or likely to be under further discovery. In this book he expands the discussion to all of the science fiction genre. The book was fairly good, and Krauss manages to have kept it interesting. I found that I agreed with him that we are unlikely to travel through interstellar space, let alone to something local, like Mars, because of the cost. I do not envision human beings getting together and funding such projects with their heavy costs. Other than this I have no other comments to make on the text.If you are interested in seeing what the future maybe like under current and likely future physics you should enjoy the book. Krauss is a good and interesting author, so even if the content is not exactly to your liking you just may like the book for his writing, and you might learn something about physics to boot.

⭐I am reading this and similar books for research

⭐I like almost everything Krauss writes, and Beyond Star Trek is no exception. He uses science fiction programs and movies like Independence Day and the X-Files to teach the reader the basics of science. It’s kind of a very enjoyable Physics 101 class. Krauss discusses ESP, time travel, and many other concepts brought up in science fiction shows. For someone with a limited background in physics, this book is very informative. The reader will learn, for instance, that gravity is actually pretty weak. Krauss also (briefly)talks of his philosophy: “I try to be skeptical of almost everything.” A very enjoyable and educational book.

⭐The book is a little dated. I thought since it was updated that the information would have more updates. It is fine to read to see what the shows did or didn’t get right but I have skipped through most of the explanation in that I already know this or it may not be the current thinking on some of the subjects.

⭐As a good and honest physicist totally rooted in the established Einsteinian relativism, Laurence Krauss ticks off each foolish error made by the science fiction writers of Star Trek, Star Wars, X Files, Independence Day, and others. He gives little hope for a future among the stars. We are imprisoned by our science and all of us Trekkers need to be shaken into reality. Granted Laurence tries to soften the death sentence with a few speculations about worm holes, time travel, and parallel universes, but fundamentally, his point is this: we must face up to doomsday with proper understanding. According to him, we will most likely die here on earth, possibly bequeathing some non-living organic matter into space that might serve as the seeds of another life form. I see him smugly snickering behind his hand as he watches the Star Trek future from his comfy couch of conventional physics, believing in unproven physics such as shrinking meter sticks, time dilation, and infinite mass at the speed of light.

⭐I really enjoyed this book. It was fun to read. Dr. Krauss is so knowledgeable on this subject and really put a great deal of effort into writing this book. I realize this book isn’t for everyone, but I find this area of study fascinating. This book is a very nice layman’s guide to quantum mechanics, theororetical physics…The “Physics of Star Trek” was great too!

⭐Easy to understand. Good subjects coverage. Love the use of x-files plus Star Trek. Very interesting on esp plus the force in star war

⭐Everything went perfectly with the order!!!It arrived before estimated date. Thanks so much, you’re great!

⭐Very good read, the science of fiction through the eyes of a real scientist.
