Description
This is the second of two volumes on the Sung Dynasty, which together provide a comprehensive history of China from the fall of the T’ang Dynasty in 907 to the Mongol conquest of the Southern Sung in 1279. With contributions from leading historians in the field, Volume 5, Part Two paints a complex portrait of a dynasty beset by problems and contradictions, but one which, despite its military and geopolitical weakness, was nevertheless economically powerful, culturally brilliant, socially fluid and the most populous of any empire in global history to that point. In this much anticipated addition to the series, the authors survey key themes across ten chapters, including government, economy, society, religion, and thought to provide an authoritative and topical treatment of a profound and significant period in Chinese history.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Incredibly detailed portrayal of different facets of Sung society required reading for anyone who wants to understand contemporary China.Although with out academic jargon this is a very dense read with no heroes or villains
⭐I can hardly recommend this book enough. It’s a wonderful compendium of articles on Sung Dynasty China. Here’s an example:An Lushan’s rebellion happened in 755 in Tang Dynasty China. It was a pivotal event for that Dynasty, and in some ways, for the subsequent history of China.I didn’t quite appreciate how devastating the rebellion was, however, until last night when I was reading Joseph McDermott’s article in Cambridge History of China.According to this article, census records from 755 show 53 million people; from 760, 17 million people.China lost 2/3rds of its population in four years, presumably through starvation caused by the military convulsion. It would be nearly three centuries before China’s population returned to pre-Rebellion levels
⭐Excellent!
⭐A great resource!
