Description
The stunning masterpieces of Ancient Greece and Rome are fundamental to the story of art in Western culture and to the origins of art history. The expanding Greek world of Alexander the Great had an enormous impact on the Mediterranean superpower of Rome. Generals, rulers, and artists seized, imitated, and re-thought the stunning legacy of Greek painting and sculpture, culminating in the greatest art-collector the world had ever seen: the Roman emperor Hadrian. This exciting new look at Classical art starts with the excavation of the buried city of Pompeii, and investigates the grandiose monuments of ancient tyrants, and the sensual beauty of Apollo and Venus. Concluding with that most influential invention of all, the human portrait, it highlights the re-discovery of Classical art in the modern world, from the treasure hunts of Renaissance Rome to scientific retrieval of artworks in the twenty-first century.

⭐Great introduction to Greek art, especially the issue that Greece was superior to Rome.Great follow up book is:https://www.amazon.com/Language-Muses-Dialogue-between-Sculpture/dp/0892368063/ref=sr_1_6?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1505049160&sr=8-6&keywords=greek+roman+muses
⭐Superb and superbly illustrated. Mary Beard can be delightfully inconoclastic at times, and we are the better for her sly humor as well as for her undeniable erudition. The book is perhaps not “easy reading,” but it is hard to put down, a delight-filled read.
⭐I found this book, both the text and photographs to be very useful as a guide. I wished for more Etruscan work is my only regret.
⭐It is fun to read by Android in my spare time. However, the pictures are not displayed very well by Kindle edition.
⭐Thank you very much. I cetainly will look forward to doing more business with you in the near future. Joan
⭐Useful
⭐Although there was a wealth of information, I found this particular book hard to ready. I own several art/art history books and found myself just putting the book down. May be more suited for archaeological readers.
⭐This book must have been written to impress scholars who have literary degrees. You need a PhD in Classical English and you are required to have tremendous background in Roman or Greek art before attempting to understand this book. I am a college undergrad with all A’s in English and cannot understand this book. Terrible.
⭐Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I have been sadly underwhelmed by the analysis and referencing of this book.Beard seems to have been fixated on a narrow aspect of work to the point of over egging certain aspects at the expense of greater coverage. The illustrations are poorly reproduced and no wonder I got a used copy on the cheap.Sorry, Maz, I love so much of your other work.
⭐Superb book with glorious illustrations. Devoured it in a day, and it’s recommended background reading for a degree course I’m taking.
⭐I can rely on Oxford University Press to deliver the goods – always what it says on the wrapper !!
⭐A nice read. Although I feel that there are better and more detailed books to read on the subject this is a good starting point.
⭐Interesting book.
