Description

The figure of the young American poet living in Paris is familiar from Paul Auster’s celebrated novels; here that character is realised in Auster’s own stunningly accomplished verse. His penetrating and charged poetry resembles little else in recent American literature. This collection of his poems, translations, and composition notes from early in his career furnish yet further evidence of his literary mastery. Taut, densely lyrical and everywhere informed by a powerful and subtle music, this selection begins with the compact verse fragments of Spokes (written when Auster was in his early twenties) and Unearth, continues on through the more ample meditations of Wall Writing, Disappearances, Effigies, Fragments From the Cold, Facing the Music, and White Spaces, then moves further back in time to include Auster’s revealing translations of many of the French poets who influenced his own writing – including Paul Eluard, André Breton, Tristan Tzara, Philippe Soupault, Robert Desnos and René Char – as well as the provocative and previously unpublished ‘Notes From A Composition Book’ (1967). An introduction by Norman Finkelstein connects biographical elements to a consideration of the work, and takes in Auster’s early literary and philosophical influences. For those interested in Paul Auster’s novels – the now-classic New York Trilogy or The Brooklyn Follies – this book is an invaluable opportunity to witness his early development.Powerful, sometimes haunting, cool, precise and limpid, this view from the past to the present will appeal to those unfamiliar with this aspect of Auster’s work, as well as those already acquainted with his poetry. Readers will agree that Auster’s grasp on language and the world around him is not only questioning, but mysterious and very human, perceptive, and deeply compelling

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Great to experience & explore early Auster, as poet and not just novelist. I’m still delving in, but have been thoroughly moved by most pieces. Some are a bit too obscure for my tastes, but most so far have blown me away. Many seem to be about the wonder of human language, the impossibility of ever truly capturing it, of embodying it, of making art from it, which is right down my alley. I want to include his “Northern Lights” in the preface of my next novel. Highly recommend!

⭐Paul Auster has been one of my favorites for quite a while. I have read all he has written. Now this book of poems which span several years is a truly wonderful addition to his opera. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be challenged and anyone who is moved by poetry from the heart.

⭐An interesting portal into Auster’s world where his perplexities are transformed into hesitant images. More real readers should read this more austere sisde of Auster.

⭐I am a big fan of Paul Auster and I am really impressed by his writing…..His mind is unbelievable!!! I haven’t been disappointed by any of his books.!!!

⭐. Many of the poems seem to refer to stones, perhaps Auster gives them voice, or can hear what they are saying. “the stones, girded by abuse, Have memorized the defeat” or “From the first step, our voice/ is in league/ with the stones in the field”. Reviewer Gerard Woodward of the Guardian states “The stones which litter the poems – represent the impenetrable antithesis of flesh, the hard, rubbed negation of the human realm” Some of the shortest had the most impact on me. “Between the sparrow and the bird without name: its prey. / Light escapes the interval” .. “Endlessly, I would have walked with you. “ The book ends with “White Spaces” short prose from 1979, that mark Auster’s transition away from poetry. “On the surface, this motion seems to be random. But such randomness does not, in itself, preclude a meaning” .. Its just remarkable that such a gifted poet, would quit it for purely prose, but I will try to find some of his fiction (eg. New York Trilogy)

⭐…very good book. his words are in every form perfect!and the collection of other poets..those other poems ..very good choice!
