Description

By applying research in artificial intelligence to problems in the philosophy of science, Paul Thagard develops an exciting new approach to the study of scientific reasoning. This approach uses computational ideas to shed light on how scientific theories are discovered, evaluated, and used in explanations. Thagard describes a detailed computational model of problem solving and discovery that provides a conceptually rich yet rigorous alternative to accounts of scientific knowledge based on formal logic, and he uses it to illuminate such topics as the nature of concepts, hypothesis formation, analogy, and theory justification.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review ” The writing reflects an enviable clarity of thought and economy of expression. Thagard has a remarkable ability to reduce complicated philosophical positions to their essential simplicity and state them in clear, flowing arguments. …To say that I liked this book would be an egregious understatement. Indeed, I read it twice and enthusiastically underlined nearly half of it in the process…. The must-read book of the year.” — J. M. ⭐If, as I believe, persons enjoy what they do well, then Dr. Paul Thagard must enjoy computational philosophy of science very much. Computational philosophy of science is the new frontier in philosophy of science today, and it portends to become essential to and definitive of twenty-first century philosophy of science.Thagard is one of the few academic philosophers of science who has demonstrated the requisite technical skills in computer systems analysis to make contributions to this new area. I believe that all of his works are worth reading, and this Introduction should be requisite reading for the graduate student in philosophy of science preparing for the twenty-first century. Five stars are not enough!Readers interested in my commentary on Thagard are invited to view my ebook

⭐Libro imprescindible para tratar la ciencia cognitiva aplicada a la computación. Es un clásico todavía vigente. Eso sí, llegó un poco doblado por las puntas…
