Description
The domain of nonlinear dynamical systems and its mathematical underpinnings has been developing exponentially for a century, the last 35 years seeing an outpouring of new ideas and applications and a concomitant confluence with ideas of complex systems and their applications from irreversible thermodynamics. A few examples are in meteorology, ecological dynamics, and social and economic dynamics. These new ideas have profound implications for our understanding and practice in domains involving complexity, predictability and determinism, equilibrium, control, planning, individuality, responsibility and so on.Our intention is to draw together in this volume, we believe for the first time, a comprehensive picture of the manifold philosophically interesting impacts of recent developments in understanding nonlinear systems and the unique aspects of their complexity. The book will focus specifically on the philosophical concepts, principles, judgments and problems distinctly raised by work in the domain of complex nonlinear dynamical systems, especially in recent years.-Comprehensive coverage of all main theories in the philosophy of Complex Systems -Clearly written expositions of fundamental ideas and concepts -Definitive discussions by leading researchers in the field -Summaries of leading-edge research in related fields are also included
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is by far the best collection on this subject that I have found at a time where complex systems are sprouting up confusedly everywhere. Even among journal articles I had not been able to find comparable essays. My best (and unusual) recommendation for this book is that I had already read five of its essays from the eBook of my local library before I realized that I had to have the whole book at the $125 price. Hooker’s 3 essays are masterful and do the field a service. Many others similarly strike just the right note in placing systems theory or a wing of it in the broadest possible contexts. This is far from the final word on a fast-growing field, but these essays are rushing along the rich ideas of this exciting new front. There is one caveat, that was also unusual for me. The book comes in a nice binding but the pages are not the best print quality — very good but not the best as in a little light on some pages. My apparently naive suspicion that the book was primarily pitched to the ebook market rather than to the traditional hard copy types grew another notch when a network chart that I was reading in the anthropology essay alluded to the core network of a chart by its red color which was, however, not visible in the book’s black-and-white only print. Also noticeable in the book is that it’s hefty at 2.25″; I have not used it on the bus yet.
⭐Really good content, not at all unhappy with it. But the binding came apart with in the first 2 days. And others in my class are having the same problem. If I’m paying this much for a book it should be able to hold itself together.
