Description

In Critical, Robin Cook delivers a heart-pounding medical thriller of murder and mayhem, car chases and corpses, and a shock twist ending.

Angela Dawson M.D. appears to have it all: at thirty-seven, she owns a fabulous New York City apartment, a stunning seaside house on Nantucket, and enjoys the perks of her prosperous lifestyle. With her controlling interest in three busy specialty hospitals in NYC and plans for others in Miami and Los Angeles, Angela’s future looks very bright. But her climb to the top was rough, marked by a troubled childhood, a failed marriage, and the devastating blow of bankruptcy.

Then a surge of drug-resistant staph infections in all three hospitals devastates Angela’s carefully constructed world. Not only do the infections result in patient deaths, but the fatalities cause stock prices to tumble. Will Angela be able to hold her empire together?

Medical examiners Laurie Montgomery and Jack Stapleton are professionally and personally intrigued by these deaths. With Jack facing surgery in one of the hospitals to repair a torn ligament, Laurie can’t help investigating, opening a Pandora’s box of corporate intrigue that threatens not just her livelihood, but her life with Jack as well.

User’s Reviews

From AudioFile CRITICAL is Robin CookÕs latest book featuring recurring characters Laurie Montgomery and Jack Stapleton. George GuidallÕs performance is spot-on, as usual, but itÕs hard to imagine him keeping a straight face in the booth. First, thereÕs some atrocious dialogue between two violent thugs. ItÕs hard to take them seriously when they say ÒHispanicsÓ and refer to Rohypnol as Òthe date rape drug,Ó as opposed to a Òroofie.Ó Other than the silly dialogue and shallow characters, the story is engaging as it recounts LaurieÕs travails in solving a series of gruesome staff infection deaths. Still, despite GuidallÕs perfect performance, this is more of a movie of the week than a blockbuster. From Publishers Weekly Last seen in 2006’s Crisis, New York City medical examiner Laurie Montgomery diligently investigates an abrupt rise in infection deaths at the start of bestseller Cook’s lively new thriller. All the deaths can be traced to three Manhattan hospitals owned by Angels Healthcare. Unbeknownst to Montgomery, Angels, which specializes in high-profit surgeries of amply insured patients, is on the verge of going public and can’t risk any bad publicity. She’s also unaware that Angels’ main financial backer is a local Mafia don, who’s prepared to kill anyone standing in the way of his investment. Cook smoothly juggles several subplots—one involving Montgomery’s husband and fellow coroner, Jack Stapleton, who’s suffered a serious knee injury playing basketball—and ekes out maximum value from one of his regular standbys, bumbling hoods. It all adds up to an entertaining mix of suspense, action and education about medical issues. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. ⭐ Mr. Cook always delivers and delights. I have always enjoyed having forensics and the person in my reading this is so wonderful. Mr. Cook provides the balance.I thank my sister in law for suggesting him, I had I seen Outbreak but my vacation with sister in law in Feb last year she was reading a Ronin Cook novel and I was caught on Cotnwell and the Brennan series so I searched Cook and found the Stapleton series! I have not stopped.Keep them coming.

⭐ I always like the Robin Cook books. They are thoughtfully written. The mystery in the story keeps the action going. The people in the story become real to the reader. They are actually believable. And you look forward to meeting them again in a new book.

⭐ A pretty well believable tale about skulduggery and corporate medicine. It is scary how big business has creeped into medical practice limiting choices by patients.

⭐ I absolutely could not stop reading this until the end! I always like Robin Cook books because they are stories that could actually happen, though we hope not most of the time!

⭐ I liked the story and the ending but it got quite technical at times. I hope to learn more in future books s out some of the characters especially Angela! She’s very compelling.

⭐ I may be predjudiced because Robin Cook has been my favorite diversion for many years, but I was surprised by all the bad reviews this book got. I particularly like the Laurie and Jack books and thought this was at least as good as any before. As, a chemical engineer (doctor) / wannabe MD (REAL doctor), I also read Cook to learn something more about medical technology. I wonder if the bad reviews come from people bored by such things. Anyway, what I liked most about this one is that all the characters, good and “evil”, had some good qualities that we could get interested in. We see a picture of healing being distorted by greed and the disasterous train of events it often puts in motion. I was never quite sure how it would turn out – a fairly complicated tale, in which Laurie, the heroine gets herself in quite a pickle, as she has before, and again Jack is not quite available to save her, but Lou does it. Anyway, according to me, at least a 4 – I liked it. I am waiting eagerly for the baby episode; at Laurie’s age, it should be fraught with medical perils.

⭐ Great story that holds your attention until the very end. As always, tons of detail but never boring. Thanks Robin Cook!

⭐ I chose this rating for the flow when it comes to Robin Cook books and Jack and Laurie. Always love the relationship and always learn something about the medical industry and finances involved. Looking forwardTo book 8 in the Montgomery and Stapleton sagas

⭐ While I’m working from home, I like to read in the evenings and was pleased to get the book so quickly. Thank you!

⭐ Book was in perfect condition. Shipped fast. Really impressed by seller. Would buy again
