Dust was the Gold Medal Winner of the 2016 UK Wishing Shelf Book Award presented by students throughout the UK. From the Inside Flap A peek inside Dust: Before and After.Turning down aisle number ten, she quickly grabbed everything she could off the shelves. Once the basket was filled, she released a frustrated groan. She would need to get more baskets. Food and medical supplies were essential. How they would carry everything, she didn’t know, but for now, she wasn’t going to worry about it. Remembering the blood covering Dust, she turned and hurried back down the aisle to where she had left him.”I found some…,” Sammy’s voice died when she saw the four empty cans of green beans next to Dust. That wasn’t what froze the words in her throat. “What happened…? How did…? What are you?” she asked in a trembling voice, staring at his chest.Sammy’s fingers instinctively searched for the bow she always carried. A curse swept through her mind when she remembered that she had set it down to gather the medical supplies. Swallowing, she dropped the basket in her hand and took a step back as Dust rose to his feet. Her eyes remained glued to his chest. There was dried blood on his skin where the devil dog had clawed him. The front of his shredded T-shirt was proof that she hadn’t imagined the attack a short while ago. Only now, instead of ripped flesh there was smooth, unmarred skin.”I don’t know,” Dust replied, staring back at her with an intense expression on his face. “But, I know that I won’t hurt you or Todd.”Sammy shook her head, her eyes flashing from his face to his chest. She bit her lip, trying to decide if she should scream for Todd to run or stand her ground. Her gaze flickered to the front door. If they ran, how far could they get? That thing was still out there and they needed food. She was also out of arrows. In here… There was food, medicine, and… Dust. Swallowing, she locked gazes with Dust again. Could she trust him? That was the real question.

⭐ Title: Dust: Before and AfterSeries: The Dust SeriesAuthor: S.E. SmithDesignation: Book One of Series, Full-length Standalone Novel with HFNGenre: Teen/Young Adult (No sex, No profanity)My Rating: FIVE DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING STARS*****Wow! Wow! Wow! I love, love, love this book! Can you tell I’m excited? I love science fiction and adore fantasy but combine the two and I’m in heaven especially when it’s written by S.E. Smith. I became a diehard fan several years ago after reading Abducting Abby, the first book in Smith’s best-selling Dragon Lords of Valdier Series and now, I devour everything she writes. Smith is a gifted storyteller and master wordsmith with extraordinary world building and character development skills. I’ve found all of her books to be exceptionally intelligent, imaginative, well crafted and unique and this story is no exception. Two of the things I love most about Smith’s work is the fact that her writing crosses multiple genres and appeals to readers of all ages. I’ve even purchased all of the books in her Dragonlings of Valier Series to share with my ten year old granddaughter. Yes, some of her series are incredibly sexy but Dust is a tender, sweet young adult, coming of age science fiction/fantasy adventure. But I digress, let’s talk about Dust. Dust is a full-length standalone novel with no sex and no profanity but does contain a very sweet blossoming love story for coming of age young adults. It also includes some instances of mild, non-graphic violence. I found the story to be imaginative, original, unique, captivating, exceptionally well developed, well crafted and divinely entertaining. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with multiple points of view. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flowed effortlessly. I loved the premise and plot for this story but it was the incredible cast of engaging, well developed characters that captured my heart. I was immediately drawn into the story and fell head over heels for the two protagonists, a courageous fifteen year old hero and a resourceful sixteen year old heroine struggling to survive on a post apocalyptic world after fragments of a comet destroy much of Earth and its population. A small percentage of those who did manage to survive the initial blast and deadly radiation are now facing anarchy and hunger, and some have even been altered in varying degrees. Dust has undergone a surprising and somewhat frightening change which has given him certain powers but Dust is not the only one who has changed. The ill effects of the radiation has affected more than just the humans of the world. A dangerous new enemy has risen from the destruction whose powers are also growing and like Dust, continues to evolve. But Dust’s new abilities come at a cost. Dust is the sole survivor from his family and realizes he must leave his home to search for food. Finally Dust meets the lovely and very resourceful sixteen year old Sammy and her seven year old younger brother, Todd who are also alone in the world. The three team up together and embark on a danger filled journey of life and death. They meet other survivors, some friend and some foe but it will take more than just skill for Dust, Sammy and Todd to survive the new enemy stalking them. Will these three young innocents manage to maneuver the maze of destruction, find a way to survive and somehow defeat their enemies? We’ll see! No spoilers from me but I will say this….Handsome, courageous teenage hero-check! smart, resourceful teenage heroine-check! A sweet blossoming romance-check! A large cast of fascinating characters-check! A dangerous, malevolent enemy-check! Heart-pounding action, gripping adventure, spine-tingling suspense and heart-stopping danger at every turn-check! That and a whole lot more!I originally read this story when it was published on WattPad in weekly chapters. I enjoyed it so much that I followed it faithfully, anxiously awaiting each new chapter. When I heard that Smith had decided to revamp and expand the story, I was beyond thrilled and immediately placed my preorder for the book and believe me when I say, Smith did not disappoint. I may have known some of the details going into the story but that didn’t stop me from being glued to my chair, flipping the pages as quickly as possible with my heart beating out of my chest and gasping for air. It was bloody brilliant! So, what did I love about this story? Duh….is that a trick question? I loved everything! What didn’t I like? Not a darn thing! Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am! Will I read this book again? Yes, it’s a classic which I’ve added to my library to be read again and again. Will I read this author again? Absolutely, just as soon as she releases her next book! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

⭐ I was really unsure of this story. I loved the characters and the story line but I believed it to be more of a teen, end of days, romance type of book. But then I got hooked because things started evolving and Ms. Smith kept adding more and I never should have doubted my love for her books, because like always I couldn’t put it down. I can’t even imagine how she will start the next-generation of this book. Great read, interesting. imaginative, straight out bazaar, but loved and definitely recommend.

⭐ I really loved this book. This was a departure from S. E. Smith’s usual sexy, science fiction, adult, romance novel. This book is a post apocalyptic survival story in which the main characters are adolescent children. There was a little romance, but mainly a lot of gritty, scary action as they all try to stay alive in the new world. The characters were well developed. This book left the potential for a great sequel, but the ending was satisfying, no cliffhanger. I’m a fan of young adult books. In my opinion, having read the Hunger Games and Divergent series, this book is definitely better than those. S. E. Smith knows how to write characters that you care about.

⭐ Normally I like adult, sexy, steamy, erotic books. Anything to do with vampires is a must read for me. Young Adult books are pretty tame and boring to me. HOWEVER, this story is exceptional. I was very surprised how the author drew me into the story. It is engaging and surprisingly different. I loved the main male and female characters. This is a very different take on Vampires and Lycans. How the author came up with this idea is truly amazing. The way the characters and the story develop is amazing and deeply surprising. The ending is unexpected and hang on to your seats exciting. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves to explore different and unique story lines. I have read all the series by this author and while I love all her books, this one is the BEST out of them all. I am very impatiently waiting on Dust 2.

⭐ Dust is a 15 year old boy who has survived the destruction of Earth. At first Dust believes he is the only person left of mankind, and Dust spends his days looking for food and trying to stay one step ahead of what he calls devil dogs. The devil dogs are mutations of regular Earth dogs, that changed with the comet. However, they aren’t the only one to change, Dust has too. Dust now has strange powers he never had before. While running and trying to escape from a pack of hungry devil dogs, Dust is rescued by Sammy and her little brother Todd. Sammy is a 16 year old Earth girl who has spent the time trying to keep her and her brother alive. Sammy and her brother have remained regular human beings, but it is wonderful to find out that all of them are no longer alone. Realizing that they need food more than anything, and also need to stay away from the pack of devil dogs, they get a car started and proceed their journey north. Along the way, many strange and unreal things happen to Dust, Todd and Sammy. They run into mutant creatures and more human beings. However, with all the changes that have happened to Earth, one thing has not changed. Human beings can still be good or evil.I have read quite a few of S. E. Smith’s books. They generally are heavy romance in a science fiction world. This is a different genre, because it is a YA book with just a touch of romantic feelings between Sammy and Dust. However, I have to say I enjoyed this particular book more than all of the other S.E. Smith books. I felt that this book had more intensity, better character development and more depth. I genuinely enjoyed the read and absolutely would recommend it to anyone 13 and older as a very enjoyable read. The book does not end on a cliffhanger, but you know that Dust and Sammy’s adventures have just begun. I will definitely buy the next one.

⭐ This was a great book. The action started right at the beginning and didn’t let up. The characters were wonderful. The protagonist, Dust, is an almost 16 year old who has survived an event that has devastated Earth. This event has also imparted him with power. He runs into various characters including Sammy and her brother Todd. Sammy is a strong steadfast survivor who has spent the last two year keeping her little brother and herself alive. She and Dust have a budding romance which is really cute. They, along with Todd, end up carving out a new family from the survivors they meet. However, not everyone has good intentions in this new world. And not everyone with power uses it for good.Read this book if you are looking for fast paced post-apocalyptic action with a side of humanity.

⭐ The book had/has potential … at least in the beginning. While the meteor hitting earth isn’t new, the dust and changing of some characters had possibilities. The problem … inconsistent writing – focusing on details that really aren’t that important, but SE Smith beats them to death. Dust is hard to really identify with as a protagonist – he’s fairly stupid and takes way to long to react to most situations. Once he does react, it’s overboard. There were a lot of ways to develop the story line and make it fresh and original. Reverting to Lycan/werewolf vs vampire is so old and tired it just leads to a big disappointment. Overall, read this if you don’t mind choppy plots, predictable situations, and characters that really aren’t all the likable.

⭐ Very well written story about what if:What if the world as we know it ended today? What if you or someone close to you was different and had abilities that you don’t have that they didn’t have before? This is a story of a teenager dealing with the loss of his family and realizing he can suddenly do things he couldn’t do before. Its about his meeting other survivors, dealing with the fear and prejudice from others because he is “different” and his ability to accept others that have aren’t like him and help them to accept themselves and realize what they can do to help make the world they now live in a better place. Somewhere along the way he gets the best gift of all when his ragtag group of “special” and normal survivors show him he is accepted and valued for the person he is, not who or what he has become. He is FAMILY.

⭐ An interesting and very different story from S.E. Smith with her usual excellent writing. The tone and feeling of the story is set early and the characters are well written and sympathetic. You want them to win but you just aren’t sure if that is going to happen. The bad guy is different and appropriately bad and creepy. The ending will leave you wanting more. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

⭐ This was a fantastic YA sci-fi paranormal action adventure. Dust is a teenager, the lone survivor in his family after a devastating event hits the Earth. The world has changed and Dust has changed with it. He is alone for a long time searching for food when he finds other survivors. But not all survivors are good, and not all dangers are human. Sounds like a typical disaster scenario where people try to eek out a living. Oh so not true. There are a lot of surprises in this book. And the ending really shocked me, in a good way. This was an excellent read.
