Description

Martin Heidegger was a philosopher most known for his contributions to German phenomenological and existential thought. Heidegger was born in rural Messkirch in 1889 to Catholic parents. While studying philosophy and mathematics at Albert-Ludwig University in Freiburg, Heidegger became the assistant for philosopher Edmund Husserl. Influenced by Husserl, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche, Heidegger wrote extensively on the quality of Being, including his opus Being and Time. He served as professor of philosophy at Albert-Ludwig University and taught there during the war. In 1933, Heidegger joined the National Socialist German Worker’s (or Nazi) Party and expressed his support for Hitler in several articles and speeches. After the war, his support for the Nazi party came under attack, and he was tried as a sympathizer. He was able to return to Albert-Ludwig University, however, and taught there until he retired. Heidegger continued to lecture and write until his death 1973.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐If you find ‘conversations’ between thinkers of different periods interesting, particularly in interpreting what couldn’t be said directly in an earlier time since various preconditions hadn’t yet been met, this is a particularly interesting one, since the logic of identity and difference is at the core of basic logic, and thus any reinterpretation changes the foundation of logic itself.

⭐Heidegger, a philosopher of the earlier 20th century became the model for the style of all bad Po-Mo writers of the later 20th century. This book demonstrates, on the other hand, that he had some capacity for clarity. The translator has very modest things to say about the two essays, but they are clearly written (at least for Heidegger). Thus they may be considered a fine introduction to a very obscure philosopher. Of the existentialists, who for the most part have gone quietly into the night, he is still read even though individuality is unfortunately no longer thought to be significant. I strongly disagree with Heidegger, but he is an important philosopher and this book is a rare open door into the system and for this it deserves five stars.
