Description

Includes the story “1922”—now a Netflix original film starring Thomas Jane and Molly Parker. Four unforgettable novellas that explore the dark side of human nature from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King.”Does anybody really know anybody? Before tonight she certainly would have thought so.” In “1922,” a violence awakens inside a man when his wife proposes selling off the family homestead, setting in motion a grisly train of murder and madness. A mystery writer is brutally assaulted in “Big Driver” by a stranger along a Massachusetts back road and plots a revenge that will bring her face-to-face with another stranger: the one inside herself. In “Fair Extension,” making a deal with the devil not only saves a man from terminal illness but also provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. Finally, the trust forged by more than twenty years of matrimony is irrevocably shattered when a woman makes a chance discovery leading to the horrifying implications of just who her husband really is in “A Good Marriage.”

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Stephen King who has always given a reader a deep dark story for everyone to enjoy and I am very happy to be one of those readers to own this book! 1922 was a great film and to read it also was an absolute treasure. After finishing 1922, the rest of the stories were intense, frightful, and deep in a world that so happens, in reality, most of the time. Just his stories are set differently and having your mind see the film rolling as you take in each piece. The last one inside the book was incredible. I have also wondered the same myself since I am a crime writer and watcher. How would it feel to be married to a serial killer? Well, Stephen King made a perfect setting on that answer.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, King is the King of Horrors. He’s been my favorite since the age of 9 and still is. I love his work and I’ll never stop loving what he does. King is remarkable! I recommend this book if you are interested in dark stories that are somewhat similar to the real world and to me, it deserves more then five stars! 🙂

⭐I have not always enjoyed Stephen King, sometimes he is too much with the ‘science fiction’. However, I have never enjoyed him more than “Full Dark, No Stars”. Four short stories that were impossible to stop reading until finished. Someone would say, “What are you reading?” and I would offer a brief synopsis and they would reply, “How gross!”. But, it was not. Each story was a trip inside the character’s mind; you reasoned with them and understood their rantionale.# 1, “1922” is a confession of a father/son planned murder of a wife/mother. The planning and reasoning were all clear, the results were obvious. Or were they? The various tragedies that follow all lead to a conclusion, or in my minda a Stephen King moral. Bravo! The ending brings it all together.# 2, “Big Driver” is so believable, so current in its topic of rape and abuse, but again the trip into the victim’s mind was thrilling. You can only agree with the plotting and strategy. An assortment of characters and a pet cat add to the trip. Again, I found a Stephen King moral to conclude the story.# 3, “Fair Extension” is a bit more like a Twilight Zone effect, but, would you extend your life if given the opporunity, at the expense of someone else? Of someone you are jealous of? Look out, it might be a bumpy ride. Yes, there is a moral to learn.# 4, “A Good Marriage” asks, “How well do you know your spouse?” If you discover a secret, can you learn to trust again? If you decide to be devious, can you learn to live with yourself again? To conclude, Stephen King writes about his writing of these short stories. He writes, “If you’re going into a very dark place, then you should take a bright light. If you don’t want to see, why in God’s name would you dare the dark at all?’Stephen King is not for everyone. I, however, consider “Full Dark, No Stars” to be Stephen King at his best.

⭐As always, Stephen King tells the stories of his characters so very well. This is a collection of “short” stories, although each one was at least a couple of hours long. There were four. The overall theme of the stories seemed to me to be revenge in it’s various forms and who doesn’t fantasize occasionally about “getting even” with someone for something. Oops – not politically correct, I know, but satisfying nonetheless! To be fair, most of the villains in these stores had truly earned the revenge visited upon them. There was one exception, but I’ll let you find that out for yourself!

⭐Stephen King at his very darkest. Still, the narrative of these stories is irresistible, despite the vividly sorrowful content of the tales. This is Stephen king at the best he’s been in decades, and I feel a writer who has produced so many classic novels has earned the right to finish his career producing short stories and novellas. This is especially true considering the high quality and enjoyment contained in King’s shorter works. My Kindle edition contained a bonus short story, “Under The Weather”, which will remind readers of a very morbid and dark episode of Night Gallery or Outer Limits… there is nothing supernatural in the story, but the impact is horrifying and macabre in its own way. This story alone was worth the cover price.

⭐Another horror home run for this star. The four stories are non-stop psycho action, with an introspective twist. Forget the paranormal, you can be scared out of your wits by…your husband, the nice guy who wants to fix your tire or the roadside vendor. These stories are all about the “normal” meeting the “abnormal” craziness in the world. You can relate to the main characters, marvel at their moxy and cross your fingers that the shadows are only just shadows, as King takes you into the mind of “everyman” battling bizarre evils. Yes, horror junkies, these four servings are the full meal. My favorite….”The Good Marriage.” I was up all night, yes cliche, but true. Don’t feel that a short story has shorted the reader. These are all gems. Hope to see more.

⭐As with all of Stephen King’s books, there is an underlying discussion of good vs. evil.I loved all of the stories and their characters but the subject of rape was treated as well as it could be from a man’s perspective. It’s funny that the main character has a cat. I can tell Stephen King is a dog person from his other books. Is that the way he sees female writers – with cats for pets? It was unusual to see him writing from a woman’s point of view instead of a boy’s or man’s point of view. The story about marriage shows how multi-dimensional a marriage can be. Only a person who has been married for a long time can understand this well enough to write about it like he does. This story was from a woman’s point of view also. Interesting. Please be sure to read the AFTERWARD. It explains the last short story in relation to current news events. I could relate to his logic.

⭐I usually don’t enjoy short stories, but Stephen King’s Novella collections are always the exceptions!Fall Dark, No Stars is a non-supernatural collection of four novellas that focus on close relationships – husbands and wives, parents and children, childhood besties, and even neighbours. I wanted to read this book after watching the Netflix adaptation of 1922. It’s an amazing recreation of the story and I’d recommend watching it if you’re a fan of the novella, or Stephen King in general! All four stories have a visceral and grimy edge to them, especially 1922 which should be avoided if you are scared of rats! These tales are emotionally wrenching…there are some stomach-churning moments, but most of the horror comes from intimate emotions.Interestingly, two of the stories focus on men and two on women. But this book also explores the relationships between men and women in general – three out of the four stories are about violence against women by men, but the women aren’t portrayed as the usual helpless victims. Even the dead ones!Personally, I found Fair Extension the most disturbing because it really makes you question your own moral code. But all of these stories make you think afterwards – what would I have done?Hopefully you wouldn’t chose the “kill you wife” option.

⭐Why is Amazon fooling us about the reviews (rhetorical question, to make money of course).I am reviewing FULL STARS, NO DARK, which is a compendium of stories. The first one, 1922, is very good, and can be read as a non supernatural tale. The second BIG DRIVER is very gripping, but falls down at the end (again, not supernatural). The rest are just the usual supernatural bilge, so I don’t know why I am giving it 3 stars really.Purchaser beware, read the reviews and you will see they are mostly about other Stephen King books.

⭐In my youth I was an avid horror story junkie and Stephen King was my favourite by a long shot. Having taken a 40 year break I am revisiting Mr Kings works. No longer horror as such but exploring humanities darker sides. I really enjoyed this book, it makes you think ‘what would I do?’ Would I have done the same? It’s a great read!

⭐First Steven King book to ever give me nightmares. May not mean its the scariest, i mean, i was ill when i had the nightmare and couldnt get to sleep, and my mind was still pondering on the last short story i had read – “1922”.To be precise, i actually had my wisdom tooth trying to come through (or so i assume, the dentist man wasnt very helpful). And i woke up at around 3 in the morning, and found it impossible to sleep.I knew i had awoken from a nightmare because you get that horrible feeling where you think someone is under your bed, or in the closet. And i did think i heard a bang come from the closet – But it was my mum and dad in the next room. However i can honestly say it scared the hell out of me. And no matter how hard i tryed to sleep, i kept seeing rats lined up on my beds head board, waiting to eat me. Or Arlette’s half eaten corpse in the closet….Yes im crazy. All of the stories are unputdownable, and they are all quite believable. Therefore, King has done his job well. You feel like your living the life of the character. Alot of points in the story actually nearly made me physhically jump, Then smile and re-read it again, thinking how stupid i am and how clever King is for making this reaction. All the stories are very dark, but they pull you in until the end. I myself love short stories by King aswell. So if you dislike short stories, or are turned off by a gloomy atmosphere, this book is not for you.If you like stories that stay with you, stories that pull you in and dont let go. This is for you 😉

⭐I have been a huge Stephen King fan for years but in recent years have found some of his books disappointing. That changed when he published Under The Dome and continues with Full Dark, No Stars. At £[] it was a bargain and I read it in 3 days. It’s a collection of 4 short stories and each one kept me gripped. I don’t want to spoil the stories for anybody so will give only a brief review of each story. The first story is about a man who has murdered his wife and is writing his confession of the crime many years later. (This was my favourite book and I found it very upsetting in places). The second story is about a lady called Tess who is attacked while driving home late one night. (I did figure out the ending but still enjoyed it).The third is about a man dying of terminal cancer who is given the chance of a miracle cure but is the price he must pay too high? (A lot shorter than the other stories but still very good)The final story is about a woman called Darcey who after having been happily married for 27 years discovers a horrifying secret about her husband (another great story with a great twist at the end that I didn’t see coming).I loved this book and cannot wait to see what Stephen publishes next.
