    ⭐Great description

⭐This undergrad to beginning-grad student textbook follows on from its first edition, published by Prentice-Hall in 2004. As in the first edition, all the fundamentals are covered in detail and are further expanded/updated.The book covers the fundamentals of multimedia, including audio/image/video data representations; color; digital video including 3D video and TV; digital audio, MIDI, audio compression; basics of lossless image compression including arithmetic coding; lossy compression algorithms such as wavelet packets and the embedded zerotree; image standards such as JPEG-2000; video compression including MPEG; speech coding and MPEG audio. This 2nd edition further includes the very recent advances in these fields (H.265 HEVC etc. — probably the first undergraduate textbook talking about H.265).As well, a 3rd author, Jiangchuan Liu, is added and much more material on networking is covered. So now there is material on multimedia communications and networking including: cloud-based computing; multimedia information sharing with social media such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. The book also discusses new-generation multimedia-based applications such as Voice-over-IP and Internet TV. Streaming protocols are covered, as well as multicast in the network layer and protocols for large scale multimedia content distribution. P2P media streaming and web-based HTTP video streaming and wireless mobile networks are considered in depth.Other textbooks on multimedia don’t go into nearly as much detail. “Multimedia Computing” 2nd ed. by Friedlander and Jain published in 2014 says it is aimed at graduate students and professional practitioners. It provides a broad overview to the subject but very little detail. For example, “Networking” consists of a single page. The DCT is placed in “Advanced” compression and JPEG consists of 4 pages with none of the detail that is found in the Li et al. Springer 2nd ed. book.

⭐I bought it for a class at the U but will keep it.
