Description
Reverend John Richard Green (1837-1883) was an English historian. Born the son of a tradesman in Oxford, where he was educated, first at Magdalen College School, and then at Jesus College, he entered the church. In 1869 he finally gave up his work as a clergyman, and was appointed librarian at Lambeth. He had been laying plans for various historical works, including a History of the English Church as exhibited in a series of Lives of the Archbishops of Canterbury, and, what he proposed as his magnum opus, a history of England under the Angevin kings. The discovery, however, that his lungs were affected, necessitated the abandonment of these projects, and he concentrated his energies on the preparation of his Short History of the English People, which appeared in 1874, and at once gave him an assured place in the first rank of historical writers. He later confined himself to expanding his Short History into History of the English People in 8 volumes (1878-1880), and writing The Making of England (1881), of which one volume only had appeared when he died. After his death appeared The Conquest of England (1883).

⭐I am hopelessly in love with my kindle. i am actually Bobs’ wife, he got it for me for xmas. But anyway, just loving the history, the older english spelling, the great detail of the battle of hastings, am learning things noone else I talk to knows, such as the name “Plantagenet” came from the fact that Geoffrey liked to wear the plant “genista”. I pour over this every night in bed, and am mesmerized by the flavor of the langauage and the knowledge I’m acquiring. Please forgive the misspells, I have immersed myself in the older language for so many days my spelling is starting to morph. Love my kindle!! LOVE this book and intend to read all eight volumes. I only wish I could own the actual book, but don’t find it’s available. But I have been given the opportunity to read something on the kindle I otherwise would not have.
⭐The way in which this book was written simply does not flow! The author uses the word “he” throughout the first part of the book (I didn’t finish reading it) ignoring a description of the role woman played in early English history. It is unfortunate that he chose to present his “thesis” in this way. In my opinion the book did not address the lives of the people during that time in history nor did it describe the impact the nobility had on the lives of its citizens. History is about people, how they interacted with one another in their society and how society impacted on their lives. I love reading about the history, of many countries, but this book did not satisfy my curiosity. Consequently, I cannot recommend this book.
⭐Since I have not actually read this book yet, I’m giving this 3 stars for one reason only: The text is so light I can hardly read it. Not all my books have this problem, I’ve downloaded several other free books like “Einstein’s Theory of Relativity” and they look fine. It’s just this book. I’d say the text is a good half as dark as it is in the other books. Really unreadable.
⭐I read the entire collection of 8 volumes and found them very interesting, I do recommend this for anyone who would like to know more about the history of England.
⭐Quite a good read, though obviously written for an audience that lived in a different era. Still contains a lot of information.
⭐Historical
⭐A great history.
