Description
In the timely reprinting of this classic philosophy text, Anscombe’s Introduction guides us through the Tractatus and, thereby, Wittgenstein’s early philosophy as a whole. She shows in particular how his arguments developed out of the discussions of Russell and Frege. This reprint is of the fourth, corrected edition.

⭐H.J.Paton, in his foreword to this book, explains that “it make a freer use of technical expressions, and it demands a greater effort from the general reader.” I’d had coursework in symbolic logic in college so I thought I might be up for the challenge. The book approaches the Tractatus as the treatise on mathematical logic that it is, employing much symbolic notation, delving into the fine points of logic, and engaging in extended discussions of Wittgenstein’s similarities to and differences from Frege, Russell, and Ramsey. The author is very knowledgeable, having been a student of Wittgenstein’s and one of his literary executors. And none of this helps one get a general idea of what the Tractatus is about. The book should be titled “Essays on Wittgenstein’s Tractatus” and it would be a very good book to read after having read a more general introductory book and the Tractatus itself. It engages in a lot of detailed discussions about various points without giving much of an overview of what Wittgenstein was trying to say. Actually, after reading this, once I started reading the Tractatus I found the Tractatus to be useful for clarifying what this introductory book was about. So I guess it’s useful in a roundabout way. And it does explain most of the notational symbols used by Wittgenstein, but not all. But it doesn’t orient one particularly well for a more comprehending first go at the Tractatus. I wouldn’t know what book to recommend for that; after finishing this book I resorted to online philosophical encyclopedias and discussions to get the overall introduction I was looking for. There seems to be a lot of disagreement among the commentators about what the book means, so I’m not saying I was looking for a “definitive” introduction. You ultimately read the book yourself and get what you can from it. But it’s good to have at least some basic orientation before plunging in. This particular introduction requires quite a bit of work to read in its own right, and as a tool for understanding the Tractatus it might serve better as a follow-up than an introduction.
