Description
Published in 1953, Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations had a deeply unsettling effect upon our most basic philosophical ideas concerning thought, sensation and language. Its claim that philosophical questions of meaning necessitate a close analysis of the way we use language continues to influence Anglo-American philosophy today. However, its compressed and dialogic prose is not always easy to follow. This collection of essays deepens but also challenges our understanding of the work’s major themes, such as the connection between meaning and use, the nature of concepts, thought and intentionality, and language games. Bringing together leading philosophers and Wittgenstein scholars, it offers a genuinely critical approach and demonstrating Wittgenstein’s relevance for contemporary philosophy. This volume will appeal to readers interested in the later Wittgenstein, in addition to those interested in the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind, metaphysics and epistemology.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Just as a heads-up, this is a collection of essays and is very insightful on what others get out of Wittgenstein’s writings, but this is not Wittgenstein’s own work. That being said, I really enjoyed the various takes on the changes in his philosophy and his ostensive delivery in its final form. It is well worth the time.
⭐It is quite an experience, coming to this classic again after many decades, as I found I had to when I was discussing it with someone for whom the book is a new discovery, As with a great piece of music, you instantly recognise the main themes and some of the variations, and at the same time have the experience of hearing what is really in it, in all its detail, as if for the first time. The sense of spontaneity of thought is the proof, of course, of just how carefully and artfully it is constructed. From the childlike simplicity of the images of how words mean to the almost surreal images such as the ‘beetle in a box’ , Wittgenstein’s ‘investigations both evoke the real power of the views that he wishes to expose as impossible even as he evokes them as virtually ineradicable. To take Wittgenstein as a possible model for one’s own philosophical style and method is a pretty sure strategy for disaster, and yet to work seriously at philosophy with any depth and impact it is essential to spend long periods every now and then, in pondering and responding to what he writes. It is the sort of book one must own. It must be there on the shelf to pull down and work on – and from – when the occasion arises.
⭐I follow Ahmed’s lecture notes on the Cambridge website and bought this book too. It’s very useful for Masters students at my University.
