Description

Israel has become the most reviled of states; and the international Left—world church bodies, British labor unions, American human rights groups and the like—has been especially vociferous in its condemnations. But, ironically, Israel’s humane accomplishments in the very realms that the Left most cherishes compare favorably with those of most other countries. This is especially true if Israel is compared with other countries in its region, or with other countries under external duress, or with the other states born after World War Two that have so often stumbled at nation-building. In Liberal Oasis: The Truth About Israel, Joshua Muravchik marshals a wealth of hard data, livened with telling anecdotes, to show that in the achievement of liberty, equality, fraternity, Israel is one of the world’s most remarkable and admirable societies.

⭐Joshua Muravchik has spent decades writing apologetics for Israel and its policies. In this book he deals with issues such as gay rights and other left wing causes. On these issues Israel is just like any other modern industrial state. Liberal groups are powerful enough to achieve part of their agenda. However this author is not really pushing a liberal agenda. He wants the United States a country 98 percent non Jewish to finance a jewish state on the the other side of the world forever. He also wants the US to preserve Israel’s nuclear monopoly and go to war against any moslem state that might threaten that monopoly. It is instructive to note what Israeli “liberals” have been doing the last few years. A lot of them have been leaving Israel. A million or more Israelis now live in America. These people are not fringe characters. For example Judah Magnes was one of the founders of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was its first president. Albert Einstein gave the first commencement address. Judah Magnes died in 1948 after warning of the danger of Zionist militarism. Magnes’s descendents now live in New York. About half a million Israelis have left Israel for Europe. A number of Israelis live in Berlin helping to make it a liberal cosmopolitan city. Ironically Hitler and Goebbels complained about this characteristic of Berlin in their day. This brain drain of Israels best and brightest is a major long term problem for Israel. Since the great majority of those leaving Israel are liberals it helps to explain Likud electoral victories over the last few years. However Israeli liberals are not extinct . Last November Herzl Halevi Israel’s chief of military intelligence gave a briefing to Israel’s cabinet and as a result found himself accused of “blaming Israel” and being an “apologist for the Palestinians”.Of course like most intelligence officers he was trying to give his government the unvarnished truth. The President of Israel Reuven Rivlin (a hawk who wants to keep the West Bank) refesed to pardon Yitzhak Rabin’s assassin Yigall Amir. He has also spoken out against racism in Israel. He as a result has recieved death threats and smears. A number of other prominent Israelis have been attacked as “Arab lovers” and “self hating Jews” for not being hard line enough. These campaigns got so extreme that Major General Yair Galon the number two military man in Israel chose Holocaust memorial day to compare the atmosphere in Israel to that in Nazi Germany. These events eventually found their way into a column by The Wall Street Journal Zionist super hawk Brett Strphens who lamented that the Israeli Military and intelligence establishments were to the left of the government and that as far as he was concerned they should just shut up and fight the endless wars that trying to control over five million unwilling Palestinians forces Israel into. One wonders where all this will end.

⭐This book compares the idealism of Israel to that of its neighbors and other countries. It does not hide the treatment of Arab-Israelis in Israel but highlights what Israel needs to look at. This book is not about a solution, but about why eliminating Israel in the Middle East would be detrimental to the region. One thing that I found interesting is the importance of education in Jewish culture. If anyone ever needed to see why education is important to success, this culture shows that.

⭐”Liberal Oasis” is an apt title for what is contained in this book, particularly as Israel is contrasted to its neighbor nations, but also to other countries in the world at large. The opening sentence gets your attention (as the author no doubt intended). Then, the French motto of liberty, equality and fraternity is used for “chapter” headings to organize and state Israel’s accomplishments as a society with democratic and humanitarian aspirations, and contrast these accomplishments with other countries.I gave it five stars because it’s a very easy read, as long as you don’t try to remember all the cited facts. There are references and footnotes if you want to follow up. The price was also right.

⭐It’s been very interesting learning on the on going’s Israel and Palestine from the eyes of a spiritual leader. It reminds us that our historical background and charts are of great relevance to our future dealings

⭐Very well researched.Author has documented his arguments and it is easy to check what you want. The fact that this is non-fiction does not slow it down.

⭐This short book is a badly needed refutation of the ignorance and hate spewed by the BDS propagandists. It shows how Israel is actually an oasis of liberalism in the racist Middle East. Joshua Muravchik expounds on how it is the other Middle East states and the PLO which deserve the opprobrium of being termed “racist”, but not Israel.

⭐Very succinct. Explained why Israel is an oasis in a part of the world where there is very little freedom or injustice.

⭐Facts and figures I certainly wasn’t aware of. Good time investment for the interested. Entertaining and easy to read as well.

⭐This book is full of facts and statistics and makes for a very boring read. It would be useful for students researching for exams. I found it hard going.
