Description

During the Six Day War of 1967, polls showed that Americans favored the Israelis over the Arabs by overwhelming margins. In Europe, support for Israel ran even higher. In the United Nations Security Council, a British resolution essentially gave Israel the terms of peace it sought and when the Arabs and their Soviet supporters tried to override the resolution in the General Assembly, they fell short of the necessary votes.Fast forward 40 years and Israel has become perhaps the most reviled country in the world. Although Americans have remained constant in their sympathy for the Jewish state, almost all of the rest of the world treats Israel as a pariah. What caused this remarkable turnabout? Making David into Goliath traces the process by which material pressures and intellectual fashions reshaped world opinion of Israel. Initially, terrorism, oil blackmail, and the sheer size of Arab and Muslim populations gave the world powerful inducements to back the Arab cause. Then, a prevalent new paradigm of leftist orthodoxy, in which class struggle was supplanted by the noble struggles of people of color, created a lexicon of rationales for taking sides against Israel. Thus, nations can behave cravenly while striking a high-minded pose in aligning themselves on the Middle East conflict.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐this is a very excellent book which i read quickly and learned a lot from. i have a pretty decent background in what’s going on in the middle east, israel in particular, but nonetheless i learned much to add to my frame of reference. muravchik writes very well; his writing is clear and jargon-free, and he is very adept at pulling together the various factors that are and have been involved in transforming israel from a country whose exploits and people were cheered — into a pariah state. he writes how the palestinians took lessons from russia in propaganda and reinvented themselves from a people proclaiming that they would push israel into the sea into a liberation movement that regarded israelis into a colonizing and oppressing people, which got the sympathies of leftists everywhere. add a healthy (or unhealthy, actually) dose of anti-semitism, always present in both right and left wing activists and many muslim activists, and you have a recipe for seriously worrisome trends in europe and the middle east which could have dire consequences for israel. i have recommended this book to many people. it’s a must-read.

⭐This book is essential for those who support Israel but are troubled by the steady stream of condemnation from the government, the United Nations, and the media. The book seems objective to me, although I may not be in a position to judge that. One exception might be the chapter on Edward Said, which spends a fair amount of time questioning Mr. Said’s biography. But even that chapter is, I believe, factual. My criticism is more one of emphasis.Mr. Muravchik is also critical of some of Israel’s own actions – including both ends of the Israeli political spectrum.I believe the book’s real value is to remind us of the fine line Israel must walk to balance world opinion and its obligation to Jews world-wide to the very real threats to its security.I would have rated it higher, but my layman’s grasp of Israeli history made it somewhat difficult to follow the arguments. I had to do a bit of homework to fully understand Muravchik’s points. For example, he details many of the issues Anwar Sadat had to consider before Camp David – most of which were outside of my recollection of the time. In his defense, if Mr. Muravchik had provided that level of detail, the book would have lost most of its readability, which was key for me.I would recommend buying the book and reading it carefully.

⭐This book is well written and I was able to read it in one or two sittings. Essentially, the Arabs have been able to transmogrify the struggle between the 150 million Arabs and the six million Jews over the territory of Israel into a dispute between the powerful Israeli state and the hapless three million Palestinians. At the same time, the left has given up on the “class struggle” and has promoted the “oppressed of the third world” into the vanguard of the revolution. None of the information is new or surprising to me, but it has helped organize my understanding of the antipathy towards Israel on the part of some liberals, moderate leftists and academics, and otherwise “reasonable people.” I have no trouble understanding why Islamic extremists and Jew-haters oppose Israel, but I have always struggled with how liberals and moderate leftists feel comfortable making common cause with religious extremists, misogynists and bigots. This books has been very useful in understanding this.

⭐This is an important book that may not get the attention it deserves. It answers a question that is hugely important in understanding the Arab-Israel conflict and the Israel- Palestinian conflict and the factors that have shaped the world’s attitudes toward the participants in the past decades. In addition to a well-thought out thesis, it is chock full of facts in every sentence, so much so that someone without much knowledge of the history of the conflict will probably not need to read anything else on this issue, and someone with a good knowledge of the facts will find new details that he did not know before. This is an up-to-date book and well thought out book that will help anyone understand today’s Middle East issues. I have given it as a gift three times!

⭐For those of us who feel that there is too much Israel bashing………..read this!It is a great relief to me to be able to read something that that justifies my feeling thatIsrael is getting the short end of the stick in the international court of public opinion. The book is well written and I do not feel that it is biased in Israel’s favor. The idea thatIsrael can do no right, is logically dispelled. How did we allow the hubris of the 1967 conquests to blind us to the dangers of control over the lives of Palestinians living in Yehuda,Shomron and Gaza. How could we not have seen that this unwanted control over the destiny of other would endanger Israel as a Jewish state, a refuge for Jews worldwide.

⭐Josh Muravchik’s book couldn’t come at a more critical time. Once again, Israel finds itself portrayed as the aggressor as rockets fired by Hamas target Israelis daily. The fact few Israelis have died is testament to Israel’s Iron Dome defense system–but, make no mistake, Hamas and its accomplices in Gaza want to wipe Israelis off the face of the earth. Muravchik’s book details in engaging narrative how it came to be that much of the world has turned its back on Israel and embraced its enemies. He writes with clarity, deploying his considerable research skills to unfold a story that is as fascinating as it is tragic. This book is a must read for anyone trying to make sense out of what is going on in the Middle East at this moment.

⭐In measured words the author gives a detailed and documented review of how the present situation came about. This is actually a very hopeful summary of things to-date. Israel’s constant battle with a corrupt United Nations General Assembly, which, with its Arab majorities, never misses a chance to cause friction and its reinterpritation of the UN’s rules. Israel has come though it all and is now stronger than ever Israel has come through such perilous times and Muravchick presents it all in beautiful language. This is a page turner and I couldn’t stop reading till the end of the book. Israel is more vibrant than ever. Rising population, GDP per capita best in the region and excellent prospects industrially and culturally. This book puts the ME in perspective and shows us the path ahead.

⭐It is not that I like what is happening to the people of the tiny country of Israel but I like the way the injustice is illustrated by the author. It was an eye-opener to read some of the dirty politics involved. I travelled in that part of the world and worked for the UN out of Damascus for 6 month so I saw a little bit of what is going on. I have no trust in the Arab world and feel that if Israel would be left alone, there would be peace for all to enjoy. But no, there are some who just want to cause trouble, no matter the cost to the little people because it is always they who suffer and never the big cheese!

⭐A must read for any truthful honest mind.No Nation ever on the face of this earth has ever had to endure the persecution, bullying, outright hatred and calls for its total annihilation since retrieving its birthright. Forget two state solutions and territory, this is a genocidal religious war being waged by a brutal intolerant ideology “Islam” whose mortal enemy has always been the Jews first. It’s PR machine has successfully mustered the majority of world nations, including Israel’s so called allies and their cowardly leaders, The UN, Media, Educated Left Wing Progressive Fools and more, into believing Israel is a total Pariah Nation. The Palestinians terrorist leaders have rewritten history to exhibit themselves as poor oppressed peoples, while The Jews are now Vile Nazi like conquerors. This is an excellent book charting the evolution of this vile Islamic Hatred of Jews, and how it has deceived the world, but of course aided by the wests own leftist progressive fools, who have always become Useful Idiots for any tyrannical Ideology, and will always carry water for it. Israel today sets the gold standard for the only free democratic country in the Middle East surrounded by a sea of Islamic misery and death. The strenght and perseverance of its peoples whose freedoms have been tested so often are an example to us all.

⭐If you want to know how the world has turned against Israel by creating fictions and lies, this is one of the best books on the subject.

⭐Heavy going, but more truth than many would acknowledge. Go Israel!
