Description
A critical masterpiece, Madame Bovary is the story of Emma Bovary’s search for passion and the consequences that follow. While deeply loved by her husband Charles, Emma is unhappy with the banality of her provincial life, and seeks excitement in infidelity and living beyond her means. Left brokenhearted and penniless, the truth of Emma’s life ultimately destroys her and her family.Reflecting on the bourgeoisie of France in the early nineteenth century, Madame Bovary is Flaubert’s commentary on the wealthy’s romantic delusions and the impact such delusions have on the lives of everyone involved. Upon the publication of Madame Bovary in 1856 Gustave Flaubert was prosecuted for obscenity and offending public morals. In 1857 he was acquitted, and, aided by the publicity from the trial, Madame Bovary became a bestseller. It has been adapted for film, television, and theatre, including two adaptions in 2014—Madame Bovary starring Mia Wasikowska and Paul Giamatti, and Gemma Bovery starring Gemma Arterton.HarperPerennialClassics brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐well written collection of stories that the author tries to make into one novel describing a woman. the title is misleading. It’s not about Madame Bovary, I only read about a quarter of this tedious book
⭐this is a touching book about a woman who unsuccessfully tried find happiness and real love. it is written with rich vocabulary and gives readers a huge pleasure. as for me, this is one of the best books I have ever read.
⭐I expected a better book considering it’s considered a classic. It was slow read because I had to use the dictionary so much. After a while I got tired of Madame Bovary and her insipid husband. I felt the pace of the book was much too slow and I wanted to know about her daughter. All in all I was disappointed and only finished so I could put it on my classic reading list.
⭐can’t begin to imagine that sort of life in these modern times. so glad i was born in the 20th century. what were those people thinking.
⭐When you like none of the characters, the story is fatal. Mme Bovary is a spoiled wife who made a mistake marrying a simple man who was totally dedicated to her. Yes, her husband was dull and naive but he loved her very much. On her part, there was nothing to like about her. I don’t know why this book was celebrated so much. I slogged through to the very end and was happy it was over.
⭐I was delighted by the writing and so glad to read it. Considering when it was written, the vocabulary was so descriptive and progressive. The story was age old and yet Madame Bovary brought new life to it. How Flaubert expressed her longing and desires was wonderful. Poor Charles, such a dolt but blinded by his love. Definitely one to read.
⭐Madame Bovary is the story of a woman who aims to be more than what circumstances can afford her. It is also the story of her husband, a rather incapable “doctor”.It is a must read.
⭐I really enjoyed this book, it is worth a read. Lots of character in Madam Bovery, I really liked her.
