Description

In Mutation, Robin Cook’s masterpiece of techno-medical suspense, Dr. Cook tells a story as chilling and real as today’s headlines. On the forefront of surrogate parenting and genetic research, it is the explosive tale of a brilliant doctor who sought to create the son of his dreams–and invented a living nightmare…

User’s Reviews

From Publishers Weekly Like many of Cook’s earlier novels ( Coma , Brain , Fever ), this overheated medical thriller covers a hokey, old-fashioned contrivancethe creation of a mad scientist runs amokwith a veneer of cutting-edge technology. The result resembles an ancient, none-too-scary horror movie played out on modern sets. The author’s version of evil genius Dr. Frankenstein is Dr. Victor Frank, a bio-physicist who is driven by his wife Marsha’s infertility to create a monster: a son whose genetic structure has been designed to preordain brilliance. Keeping the experiment a secret from his wife, he implants similar embryos in two other women as well. (“When I did it, it seemed like a good idea,” he claims, in one of the novel’s funnier lines.) A decade later, his work goes awry; the other children die mysteriously, and Marsha realizes that something about her smart son isn’t quite normalhe has no emotions. (Readers may wonder why, as a child psychologist, she took 10 years to notice.) Cook’s characterization is perfunctory even by genre standards, and his initially suspenseful story collapses under the weight of clumsy action scenes and twists that rupture the internal logic of an already shaky premise. From School Library Journal YA– Cook has created another chilling medical suspense story, this time using the perils of genetic engineering as the central theme. Readers will be captivated by this genius child, V. J. Frank. Dr. Victor Frank, a biomolecular researcher, has tampered with the genetic make-up of his son during his in vitro fertilization and implantation in a surrogate mother. To all appearances, V. J. is a physically perfect child with super intellectual capabilities. However, when his mother begins to suspect some changes and problems with V. J.’s behavior, the plot takes off, keeping readers always in suspense. This timely topic of genetic engineering is imaginatively explored.- Susan Penny, St. Cecilia’s School, HoustonCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ This book is easy to read, oftentimes well-written, but eventually too predictable to be anything other than an average read. It is also frustrating to figure out where the characters are headed pages beforehand only to read about them fumbling about for the answers. It’s like when you watch a predictable movie and you want to shout at the character(s) “Get on with it, already!” The only thing about the book that makes this predictable plotting readable is that it consists of huge sections of dialogue. The constant reiteration by the author doesn’t help, either. For instance, every time the father character sees his genius son hanging out with a retarded adult man he thinks the same thing, which is written something like “They certainly are an improbable pair.” It happened a lot, and not only with this specific situation. Once was fine, twice is okay for refreshing my memory, but after that any more reiteration is simply annoying. I can’t say this is a bad book because the story is entertaining and the massive sections of dialogue made this a quick enough read not to dwell too much on the negative aspects therein. But if you want a good book to read that is entertianing and rarely predictable pick up “Master of the Game” by Sidney Sheldon, instead. It isn’t literature but it is a great ride. “Mutation” is forgettable.

⭐ Wow. Amazing book. It was very hard to put down. Kept me wanting to read more! Robin Cook did another great job with this one!

⭐ Robin Cook is my favorite author, but this was so unlike his style. And the ending was even more disappointing.

⭐ Story was predictableLiked the concept. Will we know when this level of genetic engineering is occurring? I’m not sure.

⭐ Almost from the beginning I decided that this book was going to be disappointing! Upon further reading, I knew I was correct. Too bad because I had really liked his book, Coma, that I had read many years ago.

⭐ is a favorite author of mine for many years. The book was a little different but interesting.

⭐ Awesome thriller.

⭐ This is my second time to read this. I can’t believe how much I forgot. Exciting and mysterious. A must read for Robin Cook fans

⭐ Fantastic and thrilling. Fast moving pace, a must read. Robin Cook has done it again. Couldn’t put it down. Enjoyed every moment.

⭐ ROBIN COOK IS GREAT AS ALWAYS, MISPLACED MY “HARD COPY”, AND WANTED TO READ IT AGAIN.
