⭐ NEW YORK NIGHT is the seventh Jack Nightingale novel by author Stephen Leather, and the second (novel – there are a couple of short stories as well) to take place in the US rather than the UK. For information on how and why Jack came to leave his entire life and (almost) all his friends in the UK with all of them thinking that he is dead, see LASTNIGHT, the 5th novel in the series.Jack is now a sort of gopher for the fantastically wealthy, multi-billionaire Joshua Wainwright, who is himself a magical adept. Wainwright has had cameos in most of the latter JN stories, and he is an ambiguous figure. He pays Jack to help him root out various and sundry demonic and other tenebrous happenings, and was a key figure in saving Jack’s life back in LASTNIGHT, but the reader keeps getting mixed messages about him such that we (and Jack) are never 100% certain which side he is on and what he really wants. This time, Jack is sent to NYC to find out about some gruesome murders involving lots of cutting of the victims, that appear to be intended to obfuscate a different demonic sigil carved into each victim. There circumstances and locations of the murders are also strange, and very similar to a recent murder in Philly. Wainwright arranges an entré to the scene for Jack by sending him to Cheryl Perez, and ex-NYPD homicide cop who, like Jack, is now a PI. Cheryl is a devout Catholic and as things start to get really creepy, and Jack starts to get a handle on what is going on, he has to try to balance his attempts at a fix while still shielding Cheryl from a truth about what is really out there that she just cannot accept. Now is the time for all the usual kudos to Leather for writing, pacing, plotting etc. They’re all great. And while I still miss Jenny, Robbie, bacon sandwiches (Leather must know that we have bacon in the US) and the MG, NEW YORK NIGHT is, I think, a much better novel than its predecessor, SAN FRANCISCO NIGHT. Jack is acting more like the old Jack, there is ton of magical mayhem, as well as a mystery as to who or what is really behind everything, and Cheryl is an interesting female foil or maybe more for Jack. If I have any quibbles, its that Stephen Leather is so canalized with Britspeak that in a few places, he has Americans saying things that no American would say. Stephen, mate, if the next novel is set in the US have one of your American friends give it a read to de-British the American dialog.Highly recommended.JM Tepper
⭐ “As he accelerated down the driveway he saw a figure standing off to the left. Two figures. A girl dressed all in black and, standing by her side, a black and white collie. The girl blew Nightingale a kiss as he drove by but when he looked in the rearview mirror there was nobody there.” – the last lines of NEW YORK NIGHTFresh off a Dark Side trouble-shooting assignment on the U.S. West Coast (in the last installment of the series, San Francisco Night: The 6th Jack Nightingale Supernatural Thriller ) for his rich occultist pal Joshua Wainright, ex-London cop Jack Nightingale is inserted into New York City by the former on a new mission to investigate a couple of very grisly murders with devilish overtones. One begins to sense a pattern to Jack’s adventures. One question that now only occurs to me is: What side is Wainright on? He’s apparently a Satanist wishing to keep the excesses of that belief system under wraps and/or under control. Doesn’t that make him an accessory?Despite the predictability that Joshua flying in on his private jet to give Nightingale his latest assignment imparts to the plot, NEW YORK NIGHT at least has author Stephen Leather’s hero achieving an escalating level of conflict with diabolical beings. The three here in this story are especially nasty. The pressure on Leather, of course, is to continue ramping up the stakes in future episodes. At some point, Nightingale is going to have to confront Lucifer himself, perhaps in a Motel 6 in Tupelo. TUPELO NIGHT rolls off the tongue, don’t you think?Another question comes to mind. If Jack can summon demons at the drop of a hat with some chalk, a few candles, and some incense, how come he can’t whistle up a couple of Archangels – Michael and Raphael, perhaps – to help him kick demonic butt? Are the members of the Heavenly Host too busy blowing trumpets around the throne of the Big Guy?The best part of this series continues to be Jack’s evolving relationship with Proserpine. Eventually, I suspect, the two will be drinking buddies and the former will be feeding canine treats to her collie. Good doggie!
⭐ The Nightingale series was Awesome to say the least, and I truly enjoyed every book! I’m so sad that it’s over and don’t know what to read now after reading such a good series. I read all 7 books within two months. It made great bedtime reading to wind down each day. The last book wasn’t my favorite, but it was nonetheless very good. The way it ended made it feel like there could be potentially more books, and I hope some day there are, because I’ll never get tired of Nightingale, and all his adventures. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery/thriller/supernatural type book! Way to go Stephen Leather!
⭐ Fastest that I have read 7 books ever. All within about 10 days. This is an Occult mystery series. No Urban Fantasy here which is my usual preference. There is lots of gore and violence, yet not gratuitous at all. The pace never flags and the protagonist grows on you after initially seeming something of a callous sort. His heart is in the right place but he tends to be a loner- and this adds to the grim plot lines. I cannot wait for the next book and I must say that this British author has become a new favorite, reminding me fondly of my homeland.
⭐ Jack Nightingale is a former cop in London – touching on supernatural occurrences in New York City. He is sort a underworld (Hades – not the criminal underworld). His boss, a mysterious super rich man, has send Jack to investigate a series of murders. Jack works with a local female detective who is shocked at the input from the British detective. Great series — fun to read. Try to read this series in order for background on this tough guy who is terrified of elevators.
⭐ I have waited with great anticipation for the next book in this series. I was not disappointed.Best one yet in my opinion. .The books don’t necessarily need to be read in order except in order to understand the nuances you domestic read the original first as it sets the stage for the rest of the books as well as any of the short stories in the Jactk Nightingale books. If you have an interested in whitebulk magic, the supernatural or good and devil this series covers it all. You won the disappointed.
⭐ Once again Jack has to clean up a mess that ignorant humans have made. In true Nightingale form he gets on the trail of 3 demons and tracks them down. Enough action here to keep the reader turning the pages. I didn’t want for it to end. Stay alert Jack.
⭐ All supernatural books by this author are wonderful.
⭐ I read this book fearing the worst as i felt the series should have been finished at book 6. However, i was left pleasantly surprised. Well worth reading.
⭐ Can’t get enough of this series. Jack is an endearing character and story line is intriguing plus some horror is the perfect mix
