Description

A pioneering book that shows how the two great themes of classic science, order and chaos, are being reconciled in a new and unexpected synthesisOrder Out of Chaos is a sweeping critique of the discordant landscape of modern scientific knowledge. In this landmark book, Nobel Laureate Ilya Prigogine and acclaimed philosopher Isabelle Stengers offer an exciting and accessible account of the philosophical implications of thermodynamics. Prigogine and Stengers bring contradictory philosophies of time and chance into a novel and ambitious synthesis. Since its first publication in France in 1978, this book has sparked debate among physicists, philosophers, literary critics and historians.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “A passionate meditation on Man and Universe.” —Italo Calvino“Astonishingly ambitious and wide-ranging.” —Observer “An ambitious book which suggests that a new picture of the universe is emerging from the study of thermodynamics, and that this picture will heal the breach between the scientific and the poetic view of man.” —John Maynard Smith, London Review of Books “Brilliant, demanding, dazzling.” —Alvin Toffler About the Author Isabelle Stengers is a professor of philosophy at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Her publications include Cosmopolitics. She received the Grand Prize for Philosophy from the Académie Française in 1993.Ilya Prigogine (1917–2003) was a Belgian physical chemist noted for his work on dissipative structures, complex systems and irreversibility. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1977.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I can only understand part of the book. For that part it is very interesting and insightful. For other parts, it requires a lot of chemistry knowledge. So I skipped reading. Agree that it is very classic and profound work.

⭐Can we really say that chaos is the primal soup, the beginning? This could be fine for a deconstructionist party in Paris, but all chaos can do is dissipate. For Prigogine/Stengers is Nonequilibrium the source of the evolution of order. They defined it as “Order through Fluctuations”. Nonequilibrium wakes molecules up and introduces a conference quite foreign to equilibrium. On the edge of order and chaos the two codifications ( the orderly regime – or frozen into non-interacting, and the chaotic regime, that cannot establish any interaction or continuity of order) are able to implement complex regimes. Pprigogine defines these regimes as “dissipative structures” (the two actions within the one organism) that correspond to a form of supramolecular organizations. Energy within a dissipative structural regime exists in a constant state of desire for semiosis.

⭐Getting to read about the subject directly than via someone’s interpretation of the subject. Very long ago I had read one of the fist articles on order out of chaos in the journal Science. It was intriguing but I never had the time to pursue it further. Now, as a retired very senior citizen I have time to try to get some understanding of this concept.

⭐Science is not the same old trail anymore. Two millennia of reductionism have given pass to a Systems Approach of life and the entire universe.

⭐I would have liked to have the paper version page numbers displayed in the Kindle edition.

⭐Very interesting and in depth book

⭐Very technical with clear point of view

⭐If you want to understand complexity, this is your starting point. The book is amazing and entertaining despite the fact it is heavy at some areas.
