Description

Persuasion is the last novel fully completed by Jane Austen. It was published at the end of 1817, six months after her death. The story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family is moving to lower their expenses and get out of debt, at the same time as the wars come to an end, putting sailors on shore. They rent their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife’s brother, Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth, had been engaged to Anne in 1806, and now they meet again, both single and unattached, after no contact in more than seven years. This sets the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne Elliot in her second “bloom”.

User’s Reviews

Review [Coralie Bickford-Smith’s] recent work for Penguin Classics is…nothing short of glorious –Anna Cole

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ This was the worst edition of a book I have ever seen. Among other annoyances, PARAGRAPHS WERE NOT INDENTED or separated in any way. Who reads or writes like that??? New chapters started in the middle of a page. The words and lines were so squashed together it was hard on my eyes. I bough the Penguin Classics edition instead. It’s like a normal book! This one was as if someone set up a printing press in their basement and squeezed everything together, even eliminating the five spaces it takes to indent a paragraph to save paper. Just the worst. (Story is wonderful though! Just buy it from a different publisher 😉 )

⭐ You could say it’s the tale as old as time lol but that lines from another book. Definitely a great book that inspires depth and perception into personal strifes we all face. If you don’t want to read it yourself audible can help and if your too cheap for that YouTube has a decent reader for this book as well. Give it a shot!

⭐ The book it’s self is wonderfully written. The product is awful. This is very difficult to read because the print is very small and when the book was bound, the margins were not taken into account so the pages almost disappear into the crease. I find myself lying in bed trying to pry the book open more with every turn of the page. Very frustrating.

⭐ Purchase the Penguin version instead. This version is extremely difficult to read. The paragraphs are not indented. The text sprawls across the page; and the woman on the cover has 3 hands. Not kidding; look closely at the cover picture. Great literature deserves better treatment.

⭐ Am in a class reading the book and am truly enjoying it. As the last book written by Jane Austin in her storied career it gives wonderful insights into the mores of the time. Ann Eliott is the protagonist and her role is most instructive in the agonies of the middle child.

⭐ Please note: This is not a comment on Jane Austen’s book Persuasion. This is a review of this particular paperback edition. The cover (which seems gorgeous from the small picture) actually has a third hand in the image. I thought my copy may be a misprint until I looked closer and realized it’s in the sample image too. So yeah, not the lovely romantic cover I thought it would be. While I like the size of this paperback, I will be returning this one and repurchasing another edition.

⭐ I love Jane Austen novels but oh, boy, this was hard to read. I got through it but I hope the other books are better. I know the movies were

⭐ So the book was published after Jane Austen died and she did not have time to correct it and work on it, and you could tell. I tried to re-read the first chapter over and over again as I was confused who’s talking where and when. I gave up re-reading and tried to just read it, I couldn’t. I was very confused and had to put it away.

⭐ The cover is really blurry and grainy and the title isn’t centered on the cover. It’s cheaply done but I guess it is accurate with the price

⭐ This printing is rubbish. No effort, care or thought went into the layout, and as such, detracts from the reading. Pick up a copy from an actual publisher.
