Description
The International System of Units (SI) is the world’s most widely used system of measurement, used every day in commerce and science, and is the modern form of the metric system. It currently comprises the meter (m), the kilogram (kg), the second (s), the ampere (A), the kelvin (K), the candela (cd) and the mole (mol)). The system is changing though, units and unit definitions are modified through international agreements as the technology of measurement progresses, and as the precision of measurements improves. The SI is now being redefined based on constants of nature and their realization by quantum standards. Therefore, the underlying physics and technologies will receive increasing interest, and not only in the metrology community but in all fields of science. This book introduces and explains the applications of modern physics concepts to metrology, the science and the applications of measurements. A special focus is made on the use of quantum standards for the realization of the forthcoming new SI (the international system of units). The basic physical phenomena are introduced on a level which provides comprehensive information for the experienced reader but also provides a guide for a more intense study of these phenomena for students.

⭐Quantum Metrology: Foundations of Units and MeasurementsBy Ernst O. Göbel and Uwe SiegnerShort Review by Terry Quinn Emeritus Director BIPM Metrology, the science of measurement, is part of the essential but largely hidden infrastructure of the modern world. We need it for high-technology manufacturing, human health and safety, the protection of the environment, global climate studies and the basic science that underpins all these. Highly accurate measurements are no longer the preserve of the physical sciences and engineering, many areas of chemistry, molecular biology and medicine are now dependent on the ability to make accurate quantitative measurements. International trade in all manufactured and agricultural products are strictly controlled by regulations that need accurate metrology for their implementation.Today’s metrology is increasingly based on quantum metrology because quantum physics underpins so much of our understanding of the world. We already have the atomic second, laser wavelength standards, Josephson and quantum-Hall electrical standards, but with the notable exception of the kilogram still an artefact kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sévres. But this will shortly change when in 2018 it is expected that the kilogram will be redefined in terms of the Planck constant and all the other base units will also be linked to constants of physics, .This book by Göbel and Siegner is an excellent introduction to the broad field of quantum metrology and explains in detail the physics underlying our present and proposed units system to be wholly based on the constants of physics. It is essential reading for those wishing really to understand, and perhaps contribute to, modern metrology.
⭐Made obsolete by “The new system of units,” published afterwards by the same authors. “The new system of units” is outstanding (5*, but deserves 6*), buy it instead of this
