Description

Even before she made a name for herself on the silver screen starring in films like Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air, Twilight, and Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick was unusually small, weird, and “10 percent defiant.”

At the ripe age of thirteen, she had already resolved to “keep the crazy inside my head where it belonged. Forever. But here’s the thing about crazy: It. Wants. Out.” In Scrappy Little Nobody, she invites readers inside her brain, sharing extraordinary and charmingly ordinary stories with candor and winningly wry observations.

With her razor-sharp wit, Anna recounts the absurdities she’s experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture as only she can—from her unusual path to the performing arts (Vanilla Ice and baggy neon pants may have played a role) to her double life as a middle-school student who also starred on Broadway to her initial “dating experiments” (including only liking boys who didn’t like her back) to reviewing a binder full of butt doubles to her struggle to live like an adult woman instead of a perpetual “man-child.”

Enter Anna’s world and follow her rise from “scrappy little nobody” to somebody who dazzles on the stage, the screen, and now the page—with an electric, singular voice, at once familiar and surprising, sharp and sweet, funny and serious (well, not that serious).

User’s Reviews

Review “This A-list firecracker does it all—blockbusters, indies, dramas, musicals, and, now, a memoir—with sleight-of-hand dexterity and fearsome wit. . . . Scrappy Little Nobody is a fizzy, funny collection of personal essays that very successfully approximates what it’s like to spend time with Kendrick (long a Twitter fave, now to more than 5 million) and, as such, seems likely to have extremely widespread appeal.” —ELLE “Scrappy Little Nobody lets readers feel like they have spent an afternoon chatting with their closest friend.” —Booklist “Of the pantheon of funny, smart, strong screen women to write a memoir, Anna Kendrick’s is a welcome, entertaining and endearingly honest installment.” —The Guardian “Kendrick writes essays about her life in the witty, self-deprecating voice that’s made her a must-follow on Twitter.” —Time “Kendrick has won legions of fans for her movies and her quips on Twitter, and her wit continues in this collection of autobiographical essays recounting some of the most memorable, charming, and even relatable moments of her life—from growing up in New England suburbia to working her way up to become one of Hollywood’s darlings.” —Buzzfeed “[Kendrick] writes an honest, effortlessly funny and alternatively relatable and aspirational reflection on her personal and professional life to date. Her essays jump from grade school reminiscences to Louis Vuitton Oscar parties to the typical highs and lows of adult dating life, revealing the witty, talented and disarmingly real girl behind the Hollywood name.” —Harper’s Bazaar “The Pitch Perfect star can sing, act, and write hilarious tweets. Fortunately she’s imbued the pieces in Scrappy Little Nobody with that same humor.” —Entertainment Weekly “This collection of essays about the life of everyone’s favorite actress Anna Kendrick will have you laughing for days. After all, this is the woman who could even make Twilight funny.” —Bustle “[Kendrick] displays real wit and comic timing on the page.” —Publishers Weekly “I had a giant smile on my face the entire time I was reading Scrappy Little Nobody.” —Brooklyn Paper “Ridiculously entertaining.” —Associated Press “The craziest thing of all is that [Kendrick] manages to seem likable and down-to-earth across 275 pages(!). . . . In an era of manufactured authenticity, it’s honestly impressive.” —Chicago Tribune

⭐ My dog really enjoyed the book. He thoroughly digested the information.Seriously, the book was great. I love Anna Kendrick because she’s an awesome, quirky actress that can sing like a boss. Hearing her inner dialogue was super interesting, and surprisingly relatable.I pre-ordered the book because I was so excited. When it arrived, I didn’t want to put it down. Apparently my dog was also excited about the book. I had ONE chapter left, and the jerk ate the last 40 pages. Punk! Good thing he’s cute. I had to buy the Kindle version as well so I could finish reading.

⭐ It was just… meh. I think she’s incredibly witty and that showed in the book. But, I didn’t finish this book feeling like I learned anymore about who she is — i mean, why else do you buy an autobiography. I personally feel it lacked depth. It needed more vulnerability. It took me a few months to finish it because i couldn’t force myself to read more than a little at a time.

⭐ Kind of late to the party with this review but whatever. I’ve read the hardcover and listened to the audiobook. My review is 3.5 stars so I’ll round it up to 4Like Anna, I’m from Maine. We don’t have many celebrities that come from our state. That’s part of the reason why I’m a fan of hers. So when she wrote a book I decided to buy it. A lot of people are saying she’s “too young” to write a book. I think they’re half right. The book would’ve been better had she waited until she retired but at the same time she’s had a very abnormal life that’s worth telling. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if this book was just an easy money maker for her, just capitalizing on her fameAs for the book, it wasn’t bad. A good mixture of personal life and career. I saw some reviews complaining about Anna discussing her sex life and other personal stories. I don’t have an issue with it. If you just wanted to hear about her career you could Google it or go through her Wikipedia page. I honestly thought her personal “normal” life was more interesting to hear about. Her upbringing and build up to her Hollywood career was engaging. I’m always interested in how celebrities got to where they are. I applaud Anna for having the courage at 17yrs old to move to Los Angeles by herself without knowing a soul there. Trust me, going from Maine to LA is a culture shock. I would’ve never been able to handle a move like that at 17.I wished she talked more about the inner workings of Hollywood and what it was like working with actors like George Clooney, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Affleck, etc. She’s been in some big productions but doesn’t talk much about it. There was a nice passage about dealing with a death in the family while filming Pitch Perfect, which required her to fly to the funeral for a weekend, then fly to Canada to shoot a different movie for a few days, then fly back to Louisiana to film PP. There were other interesting stories like prepping for the Oscars. It’s crazy that they had stand ins for Oscar noms and they actual prepared and gave a real speech as if they had won while preparing for the real show. Other stories like performing at the Oscars with Neil Patrick Harris and then quickly hopping on a private jet with Ben Affleck to fly back to GA to film The Accountant was also fascinating to me. She also dropped hints about celebrities becoming “couples” just for the PR. I wish she included more stuff like that.Aside from that, my other complaints would be the book kind of jumped around a bit. It wasn’t really in order. For instance, at the end of the book she tells a random story about Buccaneer Days on Catalina Island that took place when she was 21. This was after everything that happened when she was older. Also, the whole chapter dedicated to fake parties she would throw was really random. Definitely should have took that out. My last complaint is she came off as a bit narcissistic at times. I believe she made a joke in the past about it so I guess she knows.Overall, I enjoyed it. Definitely recommend the audiobook, it’s only 6 hours so it’s a quick listen. Most of it was done while driving. Some people have complained about her voice but it didn’t bother me.

⭐ The book starts out in a fun way. It is an adult narrating their childhood aka “Christmas Story.” It was witty and insightful. The detail about “Camp” were interesting and I was hoping to hear more film anecdotes instead of Anna writing about losing her virginity and dating guys. The Oscar behind the scenes I liked and I was hoping for some “Pitch Perfect: stories. Maybe some with Reba Wilson. How could they not be funny? Instead we get a copy of fleeting passages about “Pitch Perfect.” I was seriously disappointed. I wished she had spent as much time on it as she did “Camp.” BTW I am an Anna Kendrick fan. You don’t see me buying and reading books about other stars.Did her parents read the book about her having sex and with the swear words in it?

⭐ I’ve have always had a girl crush on Anna Kendrick. She seems so down to Earth. Plays lovable characters. Gives off the vibe that Hollywood hasn’t changed her personality. From reading her book, I feel like I’m correct in my assumptions.I really enjoyed learning about how she got into acting and reading about her humble beginnings in Maine. I also think reading stories about actors beginnings in Hollywood are always fun.Overall, this novel is fun and quirky. I liked how the book was laid out with fun subtitles and chapter titles. I liked how the pictures were spread throughout the book, so that they actually matched the story being told instead of in the middle of the book. I wish they would have been in color though.

⭐ I bought this book because I wanted something light and hopefully funny to read. I’ve seen Anna Kendrick in television commercials and I really hoped the same girl in those commercials wrote the book. I wanted slightly sarcastic, cute, and funny. This book is all of that, but I don’t think it was meant for me to read. Kendrick put a lot of information in the book that I’ve never heard women talk about before. A lot. Stuff I never wanted to know about. Girl talk, I’m pretty sure, and I am absolutely not the target audience for that.If you’re a young woman who likes honest, funny, slightly sarcastic girl talk, this book is for you. If you’re the type of guy who cries because people are mean to Brittany online, then you would probably like the book, also. But, if you’re male and not prone to cry for Brittany, maybe you should find something else. After reading this book, I know one thing. If I ever happen to meet Anna Kendrick in person, I’m going to look right in her eyes and say “I thought you’d be taller.”

⭐ No question, Anna Kendrick is a phenomenon – hugely talented and incredibly driven. It’s the driven part that is the problem. Her book is more a fan recruitment device than a revealing memoir about what it takes to make it as an artist and performer. It would have been more valuable if she had taken the time to tell us what she has learned from working with artists like Claire Bloom and others, rather than contributing to more celebrity gossip. But there’s plenty of time for that. After all, she was just 24 when she wrote this memoir.

⭐ I don’t know how I came across this book. I’ve seen only a couple of movies she’s in. Maybe the few interviews I’ve read or seen of Anna suggested she might have written an interesting book? Idk…At any rate, after reading the book sample, I was already hooked. Anna offers an entertaining, informative and humorous look into excerpts from her life.I don’t know if I’ve ever read book that’s made me laugh so much or so hard. Of course I normaly read true crime so…(only kidding!)I knocked out this book in only a few days from how entertaining it is.It was interesting to see how a middle class (seemingly introverted) person from Maine transitioned into the big Hollywood scene. What’s more interesting is how grounded she seems to have remained. Granted it’s her book and she could be a monster in reality : p but I have my doubt’s on that.Anna is a very interesting person, seemingly filled with somewhat contradictory personality traits but never hypocritical. Just one example of many, she says herself she is a people pleaser and enjoys following the rules but has a destain for being nice and does not consider herself as such. As well she seems rather rebellious in her own ways. (Scrappy, it’s in the title)The degree to which she shares her anxious / neurotic tendencies was bold and balanced with her humour. Her story was incredibly vulnerable at times but never once did I think she was seeking pity. Quite the opposite with the “Here’s the truth, take it or leave it” kind of delivery. Again, the humour offered a nice balance and was VERY effective.I think “relatable” might be the best way to describe how Anna comes across in this book. She’s donethings that most people will never experience and yet when reading this book, it feels like she’s that girl from down the street in a small town.I don’t know who I’d specifically recommend this book to but I’d absolutely recommend it!

⭐ It’s an easy and light reading. Anna Kendrick is funny and inteligent and her narrative flows well, but I think the book could go more deep on some parts. I’m not talking about gossip from famous people — I’m really not into that and I liked that she didn’t went for that path — but I would like more details about how she landed some parts in her movie career. Of course, it’s more easy to talk than sit down and wrote a memoir, I know that. But if I was her editor I’ll suggest her to cut out the whole part about the boat trip in the final third of the book, for instance (I find it very boring). But as I said, I have no regrets. I like Anna kendrick and I also like her book. If you want something fun and surprising relatable to read about someone famous, this book could be for you as just it was for me. Thanks for reading this only passable critic 🙂

⭐ Lots of entertaining stories and good advice in here! I especially liked the stories that involved Kendrick’s family. I bought the book on a whim having no clue who she was (upon reading the book, I realized that I had liked her acting very much in Up in the Air, but I had no familiarity with the rest of her work). I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good story-telling. Although some of the advice is specific to younger women, she also has a lot of good general insights based on her set of ordinary and extraordinary experiences.
