Description
Stuart Hampshire, one of the most eminent British philosophers of the twentieth century, will be perhaps best remembered for his work on the seventeenth-century philosopher Spinoza, all of which is gathered now in this volume. Among the great thinkers of modern times, only Spinoza created a complete system of philosophy that rivals Plato’s, with crucial contributions to every major philosophical topic.Hampshire’s classic 1951 book Spinoza remains the best introduction to this thinker, and it is reprinted here. But what gives particular interest to this new volume is the first publication of Hampshire’s last work “Spinoza and Spinozism,” an extended presentation of a Spinozist philosophical worldview. Hampshire’s influential 1962 essay “Spinoza and the Idea of Freedom” is also included.Spinoza and Spinozism is thus an ideal companion to the study and interpretation of this great philosopher.

⭐I hate having to write reviews like this – and it’s why the starring system is so flawed. So, the good : we have an ebook version of Hampshire’s 1951 book on Spinoza. This is great. I may not agree with much of his reading of Spinoza but it remains nonetheless a classic secondary text and it’s great having it easily accessible. Likewise, for those not in the academic system, having his paper on Spinoza and freedom is a bonus. And his recent thoughts too which form the preface, all worth having. So what gets my goat ? Well, first, the price. £24 for this particular collection is utterly shameless gouging. But what really annoys me and just makes the price so much more insulting is the way it’s been put together. It’s the triumph of style over substance. Don’t get me wrong, it looks pretty (I’d love to know what font they used) but where’s the proper table of contents? Why in the name of all that’s unholy is the index a couple of useless images? Why are the footnotes so badly done?
