⭐Back in 1936 Marcuse wrote something in German which was translated into English for this book. Hegel might have been thinking the state was the great idea revealed in history, which people clearly wanted to break from in 1967, when the lectures in The Dialectics of Liberation (1968, 1969, 2015) had Marcuse praising socialism so it could disrupt history. 1936 was well before I was born, but philosophy was busy sorting things out, and Marcuse wrote way back then:The authority of the state is thus foundedat a level quite beyond the reach of the power ofthe individual; it is based on the development ofa world spirit which has progressed on its roadthrough the centuries up to the truth representedby the state. In the face of this, the question of the actual moralbasis of authority and the correspondence ofthe actually given socio-political formation withthe needs of man becomes meaningless:concept and object are already united inthe state. (p. 103).None of us has to believe anything for anyone to incite a riot in times like these.
